Ultrastructural Investigations Of Tilletia Caries Teliospores, James Vincent Allen Aug 1969

Ultrastructural Investigations Of Tilletia Caries Teliospores, James Vincent Allen

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the ultrastructure of Tilletia caries teliospores. Specimens were prepared for viewing in the electron microscope by freeze-etching and thin-sectioning techniques. Thin-sectioning techniques gave excellent results with the teliospore walls and the lipid bodies within the teliospore but failed to adequately fix the membranes and internal organelle systems. Micrographs of Tilletia caries teliospores prepared using thin-sectioning show three major wall layers and two partition wall layers and abundant lipid bodies. The freeze-etch method of spore preparation proved superior to the thin-sectioning used in this study to reveal the internal organelle systems of the …

Effect Of Foliar Application Of Urea And Ammonium Nitrate On The Dry Weight And Protein Content Of Maize Plants, Alvaro Fiallos May 1969

Effect Of Foliar Application Of Urea And Ammonium Nitrate On The Dry Weight And Protein Content Of Maize Plants, Alvaro Fiallos

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Urea and ammonium nitrate were applied to leaves of maize plants growing in growth chambers on nutrient solutions containing three different concentrations of ammonium nitrate. Dry weights, and the soluble protein contents of leaves, sterns and roots we remeasured.

Both urea and ammonium nitrate did increase the dry weights of leaves and stems when ammonium nitrate was used in the nutrient solutions (0.5 and 2.5 mM/ liter). When nitrogen was not used in the nutrient solutions, no increments of dry weight occurred. The protein contents of leaves were increased for plants in the same nutrient solutions that produced increases in …

Oral Bandage Tissue Reaction In Dogs, John Rozema

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This experiment was designed to evaluate an oral surgical dressing which may be used as an aid to healing tissue. The parameters of evaluation were directed toward wound healing enhancement, duration, and stability of the bandage. A histological evaluation of the surgical wounds protected with the bandage as compared to the control wounds was made.

The surgeries were performed on eight dogs in a double controlled experiment and were in the form of bilateral maxillary gingivectomies and mandibular molar tooth extractions. The surgery sites on the left were covered with the Orahesive Bandage while the right side remained exposed to …

The Nature Of Bone Resorption And Formation In Normalcy And Disease, Bruce N. Epker, Harold M. Frost Mar 1968

The Nature Of Bone Resorption And Formation In Normalcy And Disease, Bruce N. Epker, Harold M. Frost

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Classically, Howship's lacunae and osteoid seams or tissue have been used for microscopic identification of sites of bone osteoclastic and osteoblastic cell activity respectively. Recent transmitted light and blue light fluorescence microscopic study of fresh, undemineralized, specially stained and tetracycline labeled bone specimens have supported this use of these parameters of bone resorption and formation. Reports that the osteoclast is not required for bone resorption are evaluated here; it is concluded that no evidence exsists for resorption of bone tissue without osteoclasts. This does not apply to the perilacunar phenomena observed in certain well-defined situations.

Infection In The Newborn Infant And Its Association With Prolonged Rupture Of The Amniotic Membranes, Philip J. Howard, A. Robert Bauer

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Infections in newborn infants should be suspected and treatment started whenever birth is prolonged following rupture of the membranes. These studies show that risk increases as rupture time gets longer. Selected antibiotics at proper dosages are recommended as preventive measures.

Comparison Of Two Cultures For Use In Preacidified Skimmilk For Cottage Cheese Manufacture, Daryl D. Boddicker Jan 1967

Comparison Of Two Cultures For Use In Preacidified Skimmilk For Cottage Cheese Manufacture, Daryl D. Boddicker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Curd formation in a cultured dairy product is brought about by the addition of a bacterial culture capable of producing lactic acid from lactose. The primary function of this culture is to produce sufficient lactic acid to cause coagulation of the caseinate system of skimmilk. A secondary function of the culture is the production of flavor compounds considered to be desirable in these products. The flavor compounds produced by the normal growth of citric acid fermenting organisms are water soluble, and are largely removed during washing of the Cottage cheese curd. Therefore, flavor compounds are normally added to the cheese …

Physio-Chemical Changes In Relation To The Rest Period Of Peach And Apricot Trees, Hussein Ibrahim El-Mansy May 1966

Physio-Chemical Changes In Relation To The Rest Period Of Peach And Apricot Trees, Hussein Ibrahim El-Mansy

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Many plants require exposure to low temperature for a certain period during each year. This was determined more than a century ago. Understanding this phenomenon, known as the rest period, is part of a larger problem of understanding the factors which determine the ability of an organism to grow. The property of rest is ultimately a property of the actively growing cells, rather than that of the cells involved with protection and support.

A Cytological Study Of Certain Life Cycle Stage Of Eimeria Bovis, John V. Ernst May 1966

A Cytological Study Of Certain Life Cycle Stage Of Eimeria Bovis, John V. Ernst

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Although much research has been done on the bovine coccidia little has been reported on the cytological nature of the different stages. Few descriptions of cytoplasmic structures occur in the literature. Because of the impermeability of the oocyst wall a definitive study of the nucleus in the unsporulated oocyst has not been made, nor have the nuclear changes during the two successive divisions which occur during the process of sporulation been described.

Hyperparasitism, Michael G. Boosalis Jan 1964

Hyperparasitism, Michael G. Boosalis

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Much of the research on hyperparasitism has been of a descriptive nature, based primarily on studies with dual cultures in synthetic media. The main contributions from these investigations concern the host range of the parasite, the mode of penetration and infection, and the morphological changes of the host and the parasite resulting from parasitism.

More recent studies on hyperparasitism emphasize the effect of environmental factors, especially nutrition, on the susceptibility of the host. Research on the physiology of hyperparasitism has been limited. Nevertheless, this important aspect of the problem should continue to receive increased attention as hyperparasitism is extremely amenable …

Cytological Evidence For Reciprocal Introgression In Agropyron Trachycaulum And Agropyron Spicatum, Laval M. Pitts

Theses and Dissertations

Agropyron trachycaulum (Link) Malte and Agropyron spicatum Pursh, both native range grasses of the Great Basin, often hybridize in nature. A. trachycaulum, is a tetraploid with 28 chromosomes. It has awnless or awntipped lemmas and small anthers. A. spicatum is a diplois with 14 chromosomes. It is characterized by having long awn that bend at maturity, and anthers which are about four times longer than A. trachycaulum. Artificial hybrids are intermediate between parents in awn and anther lengths and have 21 chromosomes. A natural population in Utah was found consisting of A. trachycaulum, A. spicatum, plants resembling the artificial hybrids, …

A Study Of The Bacteriological Effectiveness Of Oral Thermometer Procedures In Three Selected Hospitals, Esther Mae Rose May 1961

A Study Of The Bacteriological Effectiveness Of Oral Thermometer Procedures In Three Selected Hospitals, Esther Mae Rose

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Because pathogens such as streptococcus and staphylococcus have been transferred in many hospitals, the source of the infections is of concern to doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel. As shown by the review of literature, good techniques are necessary to stop the spread of disease.

It was the purpose of this study to investigate one facet of patient safety by: (1) the culture of thermometers ready for use in three selected hospitals; (2) to determine the effectiveness of the Group, Individual, and Central Supply methods of disinfection currently practiced in the three selected hospitals.

The method for the experiment of …

A Study Of The Effects Of Different Substrates On Growth And Reproduction In Certain Coprophilic Agaricaceae, Raymond C. Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Psilocybe mutans sp. nov. had ceased fruiting consistently in artificial culture several years prior to the initiation of this study. In the couse of this study fruiting bodies were produced on a number of different substrates. All cultures were inoculated by mycelial transfer or by spraying with a suspension of pre-germinated spores. All cultrues were incubated for one to two weeks in a constant-temperature room at 70°F. on a shelf fourteen inches below a fluorescent lighting fixture. Lighting was continuous with an intensity at shelf level of approximately 3,000 foot-candles. Fruiting on any particular substrate was improved if the substrate …

The Response Of Barley To Soil Moisture Tension And Fertilization, Mahmood Agah

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Barley is one of the important crops in many of the irrigated regions of the world. It is an important crop in Iran for both human consumption and livestock feed. In the United States and Europe it is used for livestock feed and beverages.

The income from this crop is moderate in comparison to that from other major agricultural products.

Barley production has a definite place in the economy of the region, because it requires only a small amount of care. It can be readily grown on poor lands. One of the factors contributing to the increased acreage of barley …

Bulletin No. 373 - Biennial Report Of The Utah Agricultural Experiment Station, 1952-1954

UAES Bulletins

Our way of life is based on the ability of our agriculture to produce abundantly, efficiently, and at a low cost; and the position of agriculture today is largely a result of the research efforts of the state agricultural experiment stations and the United States Department of Agriculture. In the 66 years since the establishment of the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station, its scientists have found solutions to many of the problems peculiar to its location, topography, and climate. It is logical to rely on these same research forces to solve the problems of the future.

During the past biennium a …
