During the summer of 1943 reports were received of rotted tubers occurring in fields of early potatoes in central Nebraska. An estimated 10 per cent of the tubers were found rotted in some fields on August 5. In November and December of the same year the late-producing area of western Nebraska reported the occurrence, at harvest and in storage, of tuber rots differing from those previously recorded for that area. Specimens appeared similar to those observed during the summer in central Nebraska. In Nebraska, the charcoal rot caused considerable damage to the 1940 grain sorghum crop in the south central counties, and the following year it caused serious lodging and reduction of yield in both corn and sorghum in all sections of the state. Field observations indicated that some varieties of sorghum were damaged less than others; thus it appeared desirable to test thoroughly all varieties to determine whether any were sufficiently resistant to be recommended for field planting or to be used in a breeding program. In this investigation a survey of Nebraska soils has been made in order to determine the distribution of the aerobic nonsymbiotic and symbiotic nitrogen fixers of the genera Azotobacter and Rhizobium respectively. In connection with this survey, some of the characteristics of the soils which may bring about this distribution were studied. Up to this time practically no research has been reported on the microflora of the soils of Nebraska. Hence there is little basis for predicting the activity of these organisms under environmental conditions as they exist here. It is hoped that this work will not only supply some …

The present work was undertaken with the purpose of investigating the physiology of different strains of A. scabies as compared with saprophytic Actinomyces. By a comparative study of these groups, it was thought that differences in the physiology of the two might be found which would give a better understanding of the nature of this parasitism and also of the metabolism of Actinomyces in general. In addition, it was hoped that the determination of the factors influencing the parasitism of Actinomyces might establish a basis for the development of more efficient methods of controlling scab diseases. A new disease of red pine has recently been found in southern Connecticut, Rhode Island, eastern Massachusetts, western and central New York, northern New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, central Ohio, and southern Michigan. It is of serious consequence only on plantation-grown red pine, but it also occurs occasionally on eastern white pine. On the former host it is characterized by axially elongated, annual main-stem cankers which are always centered at the nodes. IT IS here that we draw the dividing line and proceed with the history of the Agricultural College rather than that of the University. The present study was undertaken to obtain more information regarding the pathogenicity of Fusarium eumartii and to compare its action with F. oxysporum, in order to distinguish between and to determine the relative importance of the diseases produced by these two organisms. An effort was also made to explain the many negative results of isolation studies reported by various investigators, as well as the inconsistent results often reported in studies of the transmission of wilt by infected tubers. 1. Fusarium tuberivorum Wilcox and Link is the same as Fusarium trichothecioides Woll. 2. Both Fusarium oxysporum and F. trichothecioides can produce both tuber rot and wilt of the potato plant. 3. The wilt is induced by destruction of the root system and by clogging of the xylem elements in the stem, and is, in mild cases, marked by such symptoms as discoloration of leaves, curling and rolling of leaves, and production of aerial tubers. 4. Under field and storage conditions Fusarium oxysporum is more probably responsible for wilt than is F. trichothecioides, and the latter more responsible for …
