Forty Years Of Dairy Cattle Breeding At The North Platte Experiment Station, Mogens Plum, Myron G.A. Rumery
Forty Years Of Dairy Cattle Breeding At The North Platte Experiment Station, Mogens Plum, Myron G.A. Rumery
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
In 1913 the Nebraska Legislature appropriated $17,500 to establish a Dairy Department at the North Platte Experiment Station. The department's herd was to be used in demonstrating management and breeding practices and as a source of breeding stock. Since the North Platte herd was started, research in the field of animal breeding has developed new concepts in many phases of dairy cattle breeding and selection. The purpose of the present study is to analyze the progress made under a system of dairy cattle breeding and selection carried out according to the principles that dominated 40 years ago. The results of …

The Airplane In Unit Sampling Of Mule Deer Populations In Harding County, South Dakota, Karl B. Kuhlmann
The Airplane In Unit Sampling Of Mule Deer Populations In Harding County, South Dakota, Karl B. Kuhlmann
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The prairie deer region of South Dakota extends west from the Missouri River to the Black Hills. The region borders the states of Nebraska, Wyoming, Montana, and North Dakota, and is approximately 40,000 square miles in extent. Biologists believe that present deer numbers on these prairies are similar to those of pre-homestead days. The present large numbers of deer in certain counties have given many prairie ranchers and farmers cause for concern. The region's first deer season (bucks only) in 1952 resulted from earlier increases in mule and whitetail herds. After a closed season in 1953, a hunter's choice of …

Marketing Sheep And Lambs In Utah, 1954-55, Lloyd I. Holmes
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The sheep industry of Utah began about the middle of the nineteenth century when the Mormon pioneers came to Utah. The first sheep in Utah were of Merino breeding, kept primarily for wool production. These breeds were decendants of the early Merino sheep from Spain and were probably introduced into this country by Spanish explorers. Sheep are produced to provide food and fiber in Utah. Utah's climate, topography, and natural vegetation are conducive to sheep production. Sheep do well in semi-arid climates and can economically harvest the natural vegetation on land not suited to crop production. Utah has large acreages …

Seasonal Distribution Of Mosquitoes In A Mile-Square Area West Of Logan, Utah, Takeshi Miura
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Mosquitoes are one of the most important groups of insects, because of their blood-sucking habit and their ability to transmit a number of serious diseases, such as malaria, yellow fever, dengue, encephalitis, and filiariasis.
The most important mosquito-borne disease in Utah is probably equine encephalomyelitis, which is a serious disease in man, horses, and mules. According to Spendlove and others (1953), this disease occurs every year in Utah:
Cases among horses usually are scattered, but severe horse epidemics in past years have destroyed hundreds of animals. Since this disease in humans is difficult to distinguish from other similar diseases, such …
Root Yields, Sucrose, And Glutamic Acid Content Of Sugar Beets As Influenced By Soil Moisture, Nitrogen Fertilization, Variety, And Harvest Date, Donald G. Woolley
Root Yields, Sucrose, And Glutamic Acid Content Of Sugar Beets As Influenced By Soil Moisture, Nitrogen Fertilization, Variety, And Harvest Date, Donald G. Woolley
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The United States produces about 1.8 million tons of sugar annually. Approximately 75 per cent of this production is derived from sugar beets. The importance of the sugar beet crop in national and world economy is justification for research effort as a means to more economical production.
It is desirable that sugar beet processing be carried out in the most efficient manner. More effective utilization of the sugar beet and its by-products will add stability to the sugar beet industry.
For the past 170 years, since Achard found that sugar could be used for human consumption and that pulp might …

Non-Return Conception Rate Of Artificially Inseminated Cows As Affected By Dilution Rate, Grade, Bull Source, And Age Of Semen Shipped By A Utah Artificial Breeding Association, William Lloyd Smith
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Artificial insemination of dairy cattle has become a major part of the dairy industry during the past 15 years. There has been a steady increase in the number of cows serviced each year since the first artificial breeding association was organized in the United States in 1938. In 1952 there were 4,238,245 cows bred artificially. In 1953 there were 4,845,222 and in 1955, artificially bred cows numbered 5,250,000.

Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xxviii. The Description And Occurrence Of Diphyllobothrium Dalliae N. Sp. (Cestoda), Robert L. Rausch
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Plerocercoid larvae of Diphyllobothrium spp. occur commonly in various species of freshwater and anadromous fishes in Alaska. Several times in recent years the writer has observed a distinctive plerocercoid in the blackfish, Dallia pectoralis Bean, an abundant and economically important species in the Kuskokwim River region of western Alaska. This cestode was studied in detail during the summer and fall of 1955, and has been found to represent an undescribed species, for which the name Diphyllobothrium dalliae n. sp. is proposed.

~~~ in the compounds of fluorine may be traced to one or more of the following factors: ( 1) the consumption of a drinking water containing one part per million of fluorine as a soluble flouride during the period of calcification and eruption of the teeth causes a reduction in the incidence of tooth decay; however, an intake of drinking water containing more than two parts per million of fluorine causes dental fluorosis of varying degrees in man and certain animals; (2) a continuous intake of excessive amounts of fluorine as mineral supplement, in contaminated forage, or the grazing of …
Bulletin No. 382 - Grass-Legume Mixtures For Irrigated Pastures For Dairy Cows, George Q. Bateman, Wesley Keller
Bulletin No. 382 - Grass-Legume Mixtures For Irrigated Pastures For Dairy Cows, George Q. Bateman, Wesley Keller
UAES Bulletins
Pastures have been important in the agricultural economy of the Intermountain Region. But as long as nearby valley bottom or other land not well suited for cultivation was available, the pressure for better irrigated pastures remained secondary to that for improved cash crops.
Only in recent years have dairymen generally realized that a productive herd, coupled with proper management, could make a good pasture a highly profitable crop. Bateman and Packer pointed out in 1945 this concept of pastures. Bateman et al. using newer mixtures strikingly verified the concept in 1949 and 1954. The growing awareness of the value …
Comparative Measurements Of Holstein, Ayrshire, Guernsey, And Jersey Females From Birth To Seven Years, H. P. Davis, I. L. Hathaway
Comparative Measurements Of Holstein, Ayrshire, Guernsey, And Jersey Females From Birth To Seven Years, H. P. Davis, I. L. Hathaway
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
Body measurements are important for a proper understanding of how growth takes place in animals. Unfortunately, few growth data other than for weight have been published concerning dairy cattle. This is a report of measurements of females in the University of Nebraska dairy herd made as part of a long-time growth study. During the period 1922 to 1942 each animal born into the herd was weighed and measured at regular intervals. Presented here are the data for weight, height, length, width, depth, girth and hide thickness for females of the Holstein, Ayrshire, Guernsey, and Jersey breeds. The average body measurements …
