A Study Of The Hydra Of Salem Pond, Mary Elizabeth Dumas

Theses and Dissertations

The site of investigation for this work was Salem Pond, Salem (formerly known a.s Pond Town), Utah. It was settled in 1851 by David Crockett and David Fairbanks. Colonization began in 1856 when a fort of adobe and lumber houses was built near the pond, and later, several industries located there, benefited by the water wheels constructed by the pioneers (Huf4 l947).

A Life History Study Of The Spurred Towhee Pipilo Erythropthalmus Montanus, Travis G. Haws

Theses and Dissertations

This paper deals with the life history and distribution of the Spurred Towhee (Pipilo erythropthalmus moutanus Swarth). Research was begun in April, 1955, and terminted in June, 1956. The preferred habitat of this bird is the mountain slopes, canyons. and streamsides covered with a shrubby type of vegetation, usually between 5,000 and 8,000 feet in elevation. Distribution of the Spurred Towhee is throughout the central Rocky Mountain region in the states of Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, western half of New Mexico, and into northern Mexico. During the winter these birds are found concentrated in the lower valleys along the streams …

Livestock Judging For South Dakota 4-H Club Members, Laverne J. Kortan Jun 1956

Livestock Judging For South Dakota 4-H Club Members, Laverne J. Kortan

SDSU Extension Circulars

The title of this bulletin implies the purpose for which it is intended. It has been prepared to help beginners improve their judging ability. Special emphasis has been given to the basic mechanics of livestock judging and the beginner will find it helpful to follow the suggested steps in his efforts to gain judging skill. Livestock judging is an art and yet there are certain scientific findings that have had considerable influence on the selection of good stock. Too often beginners learn the art of selecting animals but fail to know the reason for their selection. An appreciation of the …

Bulletin No. 385 - Comparitive Nutritive Value And Palatability Of Some Introduced And Native Forage Plants For Spring And Summer Grazing, C. Wayne Cook, L. A. Stoddart, Lorin E. Harris Jun 1956

Bulletin No. 385 - Comparitive Nutritive Value And Palatability Of Some Introduced And Native Forage Plants For Spring And Summer Grazing, C. Wayne Cook, L. A. Stoddart, Lorin E. Harris

UAES Bulletins

From 1952 to 1954 studies were conducted on foothill ranges of central Utah to determine the forage production, palatability, and nutritive value of some of the more important native and introduced species used for spring and summer grazing.

Plants studied were four introduced wheatgrasses (crested, tall, pubescent, and intermediate) , four native grasses (western wheatgrass, beardless wheatgrass, squirreltail grass, and Indian ricegrass), and two introduced annual forbs (Russian-thistle, and smother weed).

Field digestibility trials were conducted to determine the nutrient content by the lignin-ratio technique. In addition, both sheep and cattle preferences were studied on areas where both introduced and …

Notes On Mammals Of Dallas County, Texas, William B. Stallcup Jun 1956

Notes On Mammals Of Dallas County, Texas, William B. Stallcup

Field and Laboratory

Little is known of the distribution of mammals in north-central Texas. Russell's study of the mammals of Cooke County (1953) is, I believe, the only work of this sort which has been carried out in this area. During the last two years (summer of 1954 through the summer of 1956) my students and I have made regular collections of mammals from various stations in Dallas County, in an attempt to ascertain the species occurring and their relative abundance. This paper summarizes our results. It should not be considered a complete list for the county; doubtless species are present which we …

Birds Of The Brigham Young University Campus, Barid Baran Mukherjee

Theses and Dissertations

This paper deals with the seasonal distribution, relative abundance, and location of the different species of birds which visit or live on the Brigham Young University campus from late summer to early spring, with a brief account of their activities. The upper campus, where this investigation was carried on, covers an area of 201 acres and is situated on a bench at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains. The study was continued from July 13, 1955 to April 15, 1956. A total of 173 hours was devoted to census work and to studying the general ecology of the area. Four …

Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xxvii. The Occurrence Of Larvae Of Trichinella Spiralis In Alaskan Mammals, Robert L. Rausch, B. B. Babero, Virginia R. Rausch, Everett L. Schiller Jun 1956

Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xxvii. The Occurrence Of Larvae Of Trichinella Spiralis In Alaskan Mammals, Robert L. Rausch, B. B. Babero, Virginia R. Rausch, Everett L. Schiller

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

In 1948 much interest in trichinosis in arctic regions was aroused, particularly by the findings of Thorborg et al. (1948), who investigated serious outbreaks occurring among the Eskimo of West Greenland during 1947. Consequently, with the founding of the Arctic Health Research Center in the autumn of 1948, a study of trichinosis in Alaska was the first project to be initiated by the Zoonotic Disease Section (formerly Animal-borne Disease Section) of this Center.

Field work was begun in January, 1949, and a preliminary note on trichinosis in Alaskan mammals was published by Brandly and Rausch (1950). The subject of trichinosis …

The Effect Of Adrenal Steroid Hormones On The Protein Content Of Tumorous Livers, Duncan W. Martin May 1956

The Effect Of Adrenal Steroid Hormones On The Protein Content Of Tumorous Livers, Duncan W. Martin

Biology ETDs

Protein is basic to the structure and function of protoplasm. Enzyme systems which regulate the rate of cellular reactions are primarily composed of protein and many of these enzymatic systems influence the metabolism of less specialized proteins that form the major structural material of protoplasm. It is believed that experimental procedures which modify protein composition of cells may also influence the activity of intra-cellular enzymes. In experimental live cancer, it has been shown that the activities of a number of oxidative enzymes are modified as the carcinogenic process proceeds (Richmond, 1955, p.38). Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that endocrine function …
