Do You See The Signs? Evaluating Language, Branding, And Design In A Library Signage Audit, Amy F. Stempler, Mark Aaron Polger Apr 2013

Do You See The Signs? Evaluating Language, Branding, And Design In A Library Signage Audit, Amy F. Stempler, Mark Aaron Polger

Publications and Research

Signage represents more than directions or policies; it is informational, promotional, and sets the tone of the environment. To be effective, signage must be consistent, concise, and free of jargon and punitive language. An efficient assessment of signage should include a complete inventory of existing signage, including an analysis of the types of signs, its location, language, and its design. This article outlines the steps involved in a comprehensive signage audit, which along with a literature review, provides the foundation for creating a signage policy, best practices guidelines, and a branding strategy for future signage.

Color By Numbers: An Exploration Of The Use Of Color As Classification Notation, Rachel I. Clarke Jan 2013

Color By Numbers: An Exploration Of The Use Of Color As Classification Notation, Rachel I. Clarke

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

Notation is a fundamental component of a classification scheme, especially library and bibliographic classification. However, notation is often considered an afterthought or auxiliary to classification itself. With the advances in technology, classification systems, including their notation, must evolve. What, if any, possibilities lie beyond alphanumeric characters and symbols? The author explores the possible use of color as classificatory notation by looking at the traditional qualities of notation and the classificatory needs it must accommodate, various theories and standards of color, and their possible applications to classification notation. Theoretical and practical implications are considered and discussed, as well as larger implications …

The Use Of Icts And Audiovisual Resources In Developing Children’S Reading Habits In Nigeria, Uzoamaka Igwesi, J.N. Chimah, V. N. Nwachukwu

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This paper looks at the use of of Information and Communication Technologies, (ICTs), and audio-visual resources in developing children’s reading culture in Nigeria. It has been observed that most children in Nigeria have very poor reading culture as reading is not associated with pleasure. Developing reading culture in children has been identified as the foundation and the building block for life-long learning. This paper therefore tries to highlight the use of ICTs and audio-visual resources as veritable resources in associating reading with pleasure by encouraging children in learning how to learn, visual literacy, and associating reading with pleasure. The central …

Image-Enabled Discourse: Investigating The Creation Of Visual Information As Communicative Practice, Jaime Snyder May 2012

Image-Enabled Discourse: Investigating The Creation Of Visual Information As Communicative Practice, Jaime Snyder

School of Information Studies - Dissertations

Anyone who has clarified a thought or prompted a response during a conversation by drawing a picture has exploited the potential of image making as an interactive tool for conveying information. Images are increasingly ubiquitous in daily communication, in large part due to advances in visually enabled information and communication technologies (ICT), such as information visualization applications, image retrieval systems and visually enabled collaborative work tools. Human abilities to use images to communicate are however far more sophisticated and nuanced than these technologies currently support. In order to learn more about the practice of image making as a specialized form …

Perceived Use Of Networked Multimedia Applications On Learning In Selected Universities In South West Nigeria, Emmanuel K. Ogunlana Apr 2012

Perceived Use Of Networked Multimedia Applications On Learning In Selected Universities In South West Nigeria, Emmanuel K. Ogunlana

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Introduction

Unlike paper books, networked electronic multimedia allows many people simultaneous access to the same materials. These resources are available all the time, from office or home to research institutes and Universities. More sources can be consulted and relevant information can be obtained immediately. Widespread use of this technology has implications for the learning, studying, local network capabilities and the services provided by libraries. It adds new dimensions to the learning experience, most concepts are easier to present and comprehend when words are complemented with images and animations. Learners retain more when a variety of senses are engaged in delivering …

Beyond A Fad: Why Video Games Should Be Part Of 21st Century Libraries, Kym Buchanan, Angela M. Vanden Elzen

Library Publications and Presentations

We believe video games have a place in libraries. We start by describing two provocative video games. Next, we offer a framework for the general mission of libraries, including access, motivation, and guidance. As a medium, video games have some distinguishing traits: they are visual, interactive, and based on simulations. We explain how these traits require and reward some traditional and new literacies. Furthermore, people play video games for at least three reasons: immersion, challenge, and connection. Finally, we offer guidelines and examples for how librarians can integrate video games into library collections and programming.

Visual And Media Literacy, The Overlooked Competencies: How We Are Influenced By What We See, Frances A. May

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2009

We are often taught to analyze verbal and written communication, but the analysis of visual communication, (for example, in advertising, art, media, and film,) is often neglected or ignored. This presentation is intended to show attendees the ways in which pictures and videos affect them, and how to analyze and decode images in order to construct meaning from the visuals. They can then pass this information on to their students.

Patricia Senn Breivik argues that information literacy should incorporate multiple types of literacy, including computer, library, media, network, and visual literacy (2005). In an era of massive exposure to visual …

Relevance Of Ranganathan's Laws Of Library Science In Library Marketing, R. K. Bhatt Jul 2011

Relevance Of Ranganathan's Laws Of Library Science In Library Marketing, R. K. Bhatt

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Marketing for libraries has become an important topic in libraries in India. Philip Kotler is credited with creating the philosophy of marketing management. When we study the marketing process and marketing management, we find that many of the tasks in the process have already been advocated by Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, the father of library science in India, in his book Five Laws of Library Science. This study examines how the five laws can be used in marketing LIS products and services.

The Millennial Rumor: Understanding Millennial College Students' Characteristics, Digital Media Technology Usage, And Assumptions At The University Of Denver, Christina M. Murray

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This quantitative study investigated student and faculty attitudes toward use of Digital Media Technology (DMT) at the University of Denver. The purpose was to understand how and why students and faculty used DMT on campus. Uses and gratifications theory (Katz, Blumler, & Gurevitch, 1974) was used as the theoretical model to interpret and understand Millennial college students' DMT use, Langer and Knefelcamp's (2008) College student technology arc was used as a conceptual model. Two survey instruments were designed: one for faculty and one for students to collect data on DMT use and attitudes toward use, satisfaction, skill, and learning at …

Interface Literacy: Screencasts, Guis, And Computer-Mediated Authorship, Michael J. Cripps Sep 2009

Interface Literacy: Screencasts, Guis, And Computer-Mediated Authorship, Michael J. Cripps

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Our lives are increasingly mediated by computers and graphical user interfaces or GUIs. In education, computer-mediated learning often involves the integration of new technologies into the classroom context. In an educational environment in which courses have specific content, and in which students (and faculty) must learn the interfaces that enable them to access and engage the content, how might one move from more work for teachers and learners to a different kind of teaching and learning? Are there particular ways to weave technology and content together to move from an additive model to an integrated one that helps learners become …

Creating Online Tutorials At Your Libraries: Software Choices And Practical Implications, Maribeth Slebodnik, Catherine Fraser Riehle

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

The use of online tutorials for information literacy instruction is on the rise. Active library-related discussion lists such as ILI-L, the Association of College and Research Libraries’ discussion on information literacy and instruction, and LIBREF-L typically feature several questions and surveys related to online tutorials every week. Discussion groups and forums at library conferences consistently offer discussions, programs, and resources about creating online tutorials, and share examples. What is causing the surge of interest in online tutorials? Reasons vary: staff shortages, a desire to provide more point-of-need assistance, and increased distance learning and a growing awareness—particularly in public and academic …
