University Libraries Librarian and Staff Presentations

A vision to further national development through higher education now informs planning for the University for Business and Technology (UBT) Knowledge Center. At its essence, the Center aims to make local knowledge visible through furthering discovery of and access to research content produced by academic students and university professors on institutional, local, and international levels. This paper reports on conceptual exploration of this institutional idea during spring semester 2017 in a graduate course on systems sciences. From Service To Synergy: Embedding Librarians In A Digital Humanities Project, Janet Hauck

Library Faculty Scholarship

Definitions of the term digital humanities vary, and its place in the academic library is still being explored. Yet exploration is indeed taking place, at large research institutions as well as, increasingly, at smaller colleges and undergraduate libraries. This article details an innovative digital humanities project carried out at an institution of 2,300 undergraduates, where a creative institutional partnership was the key to its success. The project has provided an outstanding opportunity to address the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, while embracing the growing trend on many campuses to showcase student research.

Information Providers Behaviour: Communication As A Process In Information Behaviour Of Pharmaceutical Companies: Part 2, Aondoana Daniel Orlu, Benjamin Jirbee, Kaase Dominic Imeh

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

As pharmaceutical companies are sponsors and producers of much of the research evidence for new medicines, it is important that they make that evidence available to the NHS as soon as possible and that users in the NHS are able easily to access it, evaluate it and use it in clinical decision-making. When healthcare professionals refer to information provision by the pharmaceutical industry, however, they often focus on advertising and promotional information and question its value or they claim that the industry supplies biased information. In order to gain in-depth insights into information providers’ views of their roles and activities, …

Library Research and Publications

The university and seminary’s work and workplaces evolve within emerging digital ecologies, such as mobile communication, digital fabrication, and cloud hosting. At Abilene Christian University (ACU) in Abilene, TX, we have driven this transformation of educational spaces and curriculum with 1-to-1 and BYOD smartphone and tablet initiatives, and through construction of an interdisciplinary makerspace. Now our provision of personalized access to Adobe Creative Cloud for all students and faculty is again reorienting library spaces and practices with a focus on User Experience (UX). This paper explores: 1) the relation of UXD to library research and instruction. 2) an ecology for …

Visual Literacy For Libraries: A Practical, Standards-Based Guide, Nicole E. Brown, Kaila Bussert, Denise Hattwig, Ann Medaille

Library Scholarship

When we step back and think about how to situate visual literacy into a library context, the word critical keeps coming up: critical thinking, critical viewing, critical using, critical making, and the list goes on. To understand our approach, start with your own practice, add images, and see where it takes you.

Do you encourage students to think critically as they research?

How can you extend this experience to images?

Do you embrace critical information literacy?

Can you bring visual content to enrich that experience?

Do you teach students to critically evaluate sources?

How can you expand that practice to …

"Punctuality Is The Thief Of Time": The Earnest Pursuit Of Social Media In The Library, Elyse L. Profera, Maria Atilano

Charleston Library Conference

The way social media tools are selected and used in the library changes regularly in an evolving digital and social climate. The opportunities social media presents to the library community includes, but is not restricted to, user engagement, professional networking, informational exchange, and increasing the discoverability of existing online resources at the library.

Map And Geographical Imagery In Editorial Cartoons, Linda K. Ginn Jul 2015

Map And Geographical Imagery In Editorial Cartoons, Linda K. Ginn

The Primary Source

Editorial cartoons are a form of social commentary combining text and imagery. Small in size, they must be worded succinctly and have recognizable images. By their nature, use, and placement – traditionally on the opinion and editorial page of a newspaper – editorial or political cartoons have a point to make, an agenda to press. Whether that message is subtle or blatant, editorial cartoons are designed to comment on and make people think about events and issues of local, regional, national, or global significance.

This study examined map and geographical imagery in selected editorial cartoons. The purpose was to identify …

Information For Inspiration: Understanding Information-Seeking Behaviour And Library Usage Of Students At The Hong Kong Design Institute, Patrick Lo, Wilson Chu

Staff Publications

The process of information- and inspiration-seeking behaviour amongst artists and designers often involve direct observation, note-taking, collecting materials and image samples, recognising styles, analysing movements, patterns, textures, as well as experimenting with different materials and techniques. They also rely heavily on having access to a variety of visual resources, both physical and digital, during the process of inspiration-seeking. However, there have been few studies on how art and design students look for and use information in the digital age, especially in the context of the library. This paper reports on an empirical study of the inspiration-seeking process and other information-related …

Librarians, like many professionals in other occupations, tend to rely on text and underutilize graphics. Research on visual communication shows that pictures have a number of advantages over words. We can interact more effectively with colleagues and patrons by incorporating ideas from this body of research.

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

Video of the workshop is available online at: http://vimeo.com/96035501

Digital badges--much like their analog predecessor the scouting badge-- can tell us a lot about a badge bearer’s accomplishments and skills. We all know that someone who has earned a First Aid badge is proficient in doctoring small wounds, and perhaps even providing CPR! Digital badges function the same way. They certify and communicate an individual’s knowledge, skills, and/or achievements.

Digital badges have been adopted by social media sites such as 4Square to recognize users’ achievements and are growing in popularity. They are being used by educational institutions as a way …

Information Visualization And Keyword Searching, Matt Conner, Melissa Browne

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2011

The session will provide an overview of advances in visual literacy and their relevance to library instruction and focus on the sub-field of information visualization as an emerging area that synthesizes trends in computer science, education, and psychology. Information visualization will then be related to the search behaviors of users which appear to be deteriorating under the influence of the internet. Three graphical pedagogies (based on information visualization) for teaching the generation of keywords will be discussed. The session will end with an update on research underway to test the effectiveness of the three pedagogies.
