Who Put That Column Into The Middle Of The Room? Designing Functional, Flexible, And Forgiving Spaces For Library Instruction, Paul Glassman
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2006
What is the right space for library instruction? How do we propose a project of that magnitude? What happens if the architect doesn't listen to us? Can we do this on our own, without an architect? Do we want fixed seating? What type of equipment is needed? What should the capacity be? These and other questions will be addressed in this practical session for any participant with an interest in or need to create dedicated instructional spaces within or near a library. With the increasing demand for electronic classrooms and the measurable benefits smart classrooms have in effective information literacy …

Agricultural Knowledge Transfer In India: A Study Of Prevailing Communication Channels, I. V. Malhan, Shivarama Rao
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Abstract: The nature of agricultural research institutions and activities considerably influence the agriculture information sector in India. This paper describes the development of the agricultural sector in India and provides a comprehensive review of channels of agricultural knowledge transfer in India, including community projects, extension services, government initiatives, agriclinics, networks, and the role of non-governmental organizations and libraries. The paper concludes with the need for integration and consolidation of existing efforts for knowledge transfer from lab to land, and highlights the requirement of setting up a universal agricultural digital library, including content on all areas of agriculture.

A Framework For Creating A Facetted Classification For Genres: Addressing Issues Of Multidimensionality., Barbara H. Kwasnik, Kevin Crowston
A Framework For Creating A Facetted Classification For Genres: Addressing Issues Of Multidimensionality., Barbara H. Kwasnik, Kevin Crowston
School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship
People recognize and use document genres as a way of identifying useful information and of participating in mutually understood communicative acts. Crowston and Kwasnik [1] discuss the possibility of improving information access in large digital collections through the identification and use of document genre metadata. They draw on the definition of genre proposed by Orlikowski and Yates [3], who describe genre as “a distinctive type of communicative action, characterized by a socially recognized communicative purpose and common aspects of form” (p. 543). Scholars in fields such as rhetoric and library science have attempted to describe and systematize the notion of …

Visual Displays Of Information: A Conceptual Taxonomy, Scott Warren
Visual Displays Of Information: A Conceptual Taxonomy, Scott Warren
Librarian Publications
This paper creates a taxonomic model for visual information displays looking at three levels: information design (based on Edward Tufte’s work), information architecture, and information spaces. Special attention is paid to the use of spatial and navigational metaphors in visual systems as they affect the user’s experience. Especially interesting is how a user creates an “information space” – a mental model of what he has seen, how she keeps track of where she is within a system, and how these activities fit together with the data that is being sought. Mathematics is one area that holds promise for better understanding …

Genre-Based Navigation On The Web, Barbara H. Kwasnik, Kevin Crowston, Mike Nilan, X. Liu, J. Cai
School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship
We report on our ongoing study of using the genre of Web pages to facilitate information exploration. By genre, we mean socially recognized regularities of form and purpose in documents (e.g., a letter, a memo, a research paper). Our study had three phases. First, through a user study, we identified genres which most/least frequently meet searchers' information needs. We found that certain genres are better suited for certain types of needs. We identified five (5) major groups of document genres that might be used in an interactive search tool that would allow genrebased navigation. We tried to balance the following …

The Anchor: 1980
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.
