Student Reading Practices In Print And Electronic Media, Nancy M. Foasberg Sep 2014

Student Reading Practices In Print And Electronic Media, Nancy M. Foasberg

Publications and Research

This paper reports a diary-based qualitative study on college students’ reading habits with regard to print and electronic media. Students used a form to record information about their reading practices for twelve days, including length of reading event, location, format used, and the purpose of reading. Students tended to use print for academic and long-form reading and to engage with it more deeply. Although electronic resources were sometimes used for academic purposes, students often used them for shorter and nonacademic reading. Students found electronic media convenient, but most of them did not wish to switch to electronic media for their …

Leveraging Adult Learning Theory With Online Learning Modules, Rebecca Halpern, Chimene Tucker Jul 2014

Leveraging Adult Learning Theory With Online Learning Modules, Rebecca Halpern, Chimene Tucker

Library Instruction West 2014

Adult learners are a quickly growing population on university campuses. While there is a fair amount of research on the differences in adult learning pedagogies, most information literacy literature focuses on undergraduate skills and competencies. At the same time, more and more adult learners are harnessing the flexibility of online programs to get their degrees. How can we best leverage what we know about adult learning theories with sustainable, scalable, and engaging online learning modules?
Rebecca Halpern is the librarian for the online Master of Social Work program at the University of Southern California. One of her biggest projects is …

Library Spaces In The 21st Century—Meeting The Challenges Of User Needs For Information, Technology, And Expertise, Robert A. Seal

University Libraries: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Libraries and library professionals face multiple challenges in meeting user needs in the second decade of the new millennium. This is particularly true in academic libraries where students and faculty demand and expect fast, easy, and seamless access to information as well as flexible, comfortable places to work alone was well as collaboratively with colleagues, friends, classmates, and instructors. These same patrons often require the assistance of information specialists to navigate a library’s increasingly large array of online resources. The past fifteen plus years have seen a major shift in philosophy in the U.S. and in other parts of the …

A Cross-Site Study Of User Behavior And Privacy Perception In Social Networks, Yue Zhang Jul 2014

A Cross-Site Study Of User Behavior And Privacy Perception In Social Networks, Yue Zhang

Open Access Theses

While online social networking sites have brought convenience and diversity in people's social lives, they have also been the source for information leakage. Researchers have been looking for ways to balance user privacy protection and information disclosure. However, literature suggested that many users either failed to perceive privacy risks correctly or they failed to behave in accordance with privacy awareness even they have already perceived potential risks. ^ This thesis conducted a survey to measure social network users' privacy attitude, privacy perception and their actual behavior when using social networking sites. The survey targeted at three populations of different cultural …

Experiencing “Ipads For All”: Results From A Library-Wide Mobile Technology Program, Michelle Armstrong, Peggy S. Cooper

Charleston Library Conference

Libraries have become iPad enthusiasts on a global scale. Librarians use the mobile device in all aspects of their work, and they are an ever present part of our patrons' lives. As a result, there is a growing need for all library staff members to be familiar with the technology. This paper explains Boise State University Albertsons Library’s use of mobile technology, specifically iPads, and the internal shifts that occurred as the library made mobile devices accessible to all library employees. Attendees explored practical issues faced when implementing the “iPads for All” approach, strategies used to encourage the adoption of …

Support When It Counts: Library Roles In Public Access To Federally Funded Research, Kristine M. Alpi, William M. Cross, Hilary M. Davis

Charleston Library Conference

In November 2012, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced it would begin enforcing its April 2008 mandate of public access to NIH-funded research by delaying processing of investigators’ grants reporting noncompliant publications. In response, the North Carolina State University (NCSU) Libraries offered to assist the University’s sponsored research administration in supporting NCSU researchers who had publications stemming from NIH funding and had not achieved compliance. Since the 2008 NIH mandate, over 1,000 articles based on NIH-funding have been published by NCSU across research areas including veterinary medicine, life sciences, physical sciences, social sciences, engineering, textiles, design, math, and statistics. …

Revising A Collection Development Manual: Challenges And Opportunities, Joshua M. Lupkin, Tony Bremholm, Eric Wedig Jun 2014

Revising A Collection Development Manual: Challenges And Opportunities, Joshua M. Lupkin, Tony Bremholm, Eric Wedig

Charleston Library Conference

Collection development manuals remain highly relevant to library strategic goals, though they are often in need of revision. Staffing models and strategic goals for liaison librarians and subject specialists are evolving rapidly with collection development competing with information literacy, scholarly communication, and digital services for time and resources. In this context, it is more and more likely for important knowledge about local and general best practices to be forgotten or neglected. At the same time, many new librarians inherit collections responsibility in a market for scholarly content in unstable formats and price models. This paper outlines the experience of Howard-Tilton …

What competencies in working with data do graduate students in the Social Sciences need to acquire before they graduate? What roles can librarians and other information professionals play in teaching these competencies to graduate students? This paper will report on preliminary findings from an investigation into the data management competencies and skill gaps of graduate students in the social sciences. Building from the work of the Data Information Literacy (DIL) project (http://datainfolit.org), this study uses an interview-based approach to discern how competencies in working with data are understood and valued by graduate students and their faculty advisors. Great Expectations: Results From A Faculty Survey Of Students' Information Literacy Proficiency, Brian Jackson, Margy Macmillan, Michelle Sinotte Jun 2014

Great Expectations: Results From A Faculty Survey Of Students' Information Literacy Proficiency, Brian Jackson, Margy Macmillan, Michelle Sinotte

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

In the fall of 2012, our library surveyed teaching faculty to gauge their expectations around students’ use of information. We asked instructors what they thought was important for students to know in each year of study, how proficient they felt students were in performing tasks associated with research, how they expected students to acquire that proficiency, and how they assessed students’ skills. The survey also polled faculty on the types of resources they felt were important for each year of study. The results of the study are informing the development of the library’s strategic plan and the inclusion of information …

Beyond Satisfaction: Understanding And Promoting The Instructor-Librarian Relationship, Margaret Bausman, Sarah Laleman Ward, John Pell

Publications and Research

This article reports upon the assessment and research activities undertaken by a research group of faculty librarians at Hunter College regarding the perceptions, awareness, and usage of library services by non-librarian faculty members. Given the initial directive to measure faculty satisfaction with library services, the research group developed an ongoing action-research protocol to pursue more meaningful assessments of faculty awareness and use of library services and resources. The researchers employed both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, gathering data through informal information groups with faculty members and through an online survey measuring faculty awareness of library resources and services (Faculty Awareness of …

Community Engagement Through Service-Learning, Maureen Barry Apr 2014

Community Engagement Through Service-Learning, Maureen Barry

University Libraries' Staff Publications

Community engagement and libraries go hand-in-hand. Our communities are vital to our very existence. For academic libraries, serving students, faculty and staff is their primary role, and the immediate campus is often the community with which the library engages most often. But new roles, such as service-learning (S-L), provide meaningful opportunities for the library to connect with the surrounding communities and regions.
