Student Confidence/Overconfidence In The Research Process, Valeria Molteni, Emily Chan Jan 2015

Student Confidence/Overconfidence In The Research Process, Valeria Molteni, Emily Chan

Faculty and Staff Publications

Librarians with instructional responsibilities will base information literacy session content upon course syllabi and teaching faculty's assessments of student readiness. Often students' self-perceived competencies do not factor into the lesson planning process. The aim of this project is to collect the levels of self-confidence for a group of students who are primarily entering health care professions. This study observes students' levels of self-confidence in performing research-related activities and their corresponding ability to correctly answer content questions for those tasks. Students' self-confidence ratings are not reliable indicators for information literacy competence. The confidence levels for information literacy tasks of students entering …

Revolutionary Or Evolutionary? Making Research Data Management Manageable, Kristin Partlo, Diana Symons, Jonathan D. Carlson Jan 2015

Revolutionary Or Evolutionary? Making Research Data Management Manageable, Kristin Partlo, Diana Symons, Jonathan D. Carlson

Libraries Staff Publications

This chapter investigates the role of academic librarians, particularly those at small liberal arts institutions, in providing research data management services. Research data management may not seem like an obvious fit for curricular libraries whose primary mission is supporting teaching rather than faculty research, nor is data curation an obvious need for schools without a data repository or staff who specialize in the preservation and dissemination of data. Yet numerous reports cite data management and data services as critical services for the future of academic libraries (ACRL Planning and Review Committee, 2013; Johnson, 2014; Cox, 2013; Tenopir, 2012). The question …

The Case Of The Disappearing E-Book: Academic Libraries And Subscription Packages, Helen Georgas

Publications and Research

One of the standard models for e-book licensing in academic libraries is the subscription package. Deleted titles were mainly recent publications (published within the last ten years), with a high number of deletions within the broad subject areas of the social sciences (H), language and literature (P), and history (C, D, E, F). Deleted titles were evenly divided between monographs published by popular presses, and monographs published by scholarly or university presses. It is recommended that deleted titles be closely …

Planning For Digitization Of University Libraries In Ghana: Challenges And Prospects, Perpetua Sekyiwa Dadzie, Thomas Van Der Walt

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The study investigates the availability of strategic plans or policies for the development of digital libraries in selected universities in Ghana. A case study approach was adopted and interviews were held with three university librarians to determine their views on planning and budgeting for digitization. The findings reveal that all three university libraries have strategic plans, though some are outdated and therefore, rely on policies to ensure that digitization activities are enhanced. Budgetary support for digitization activities range from 16.6% - 50% of the total library budget. The study recommends that the libraries should have an up-to-date strategic plan which …

Integrating Information Literacy, The Pogil Method, And Ipads Into A Foundational Studies Program, Carrie Moore, Jennifer Black, Barbara C. Glackin, Margie Ruppel, Elaine Watson

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

This article provides an overview of the design, implementation, revision and informal assessment of an information literacy curriculum embedded in a new University Foundations (UF) program at a mid‐sized public university. The library information literacy sessions incorporated teambased learning and Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) elements using iPads. Each session provided students an opportunity to develop and apply information literacy skills, and included critical thinking questions which led students to think about underlying concepts. A focus group with the librarians assessed the UF library curriculum, its impact on student engagement, and the training activities for librarian teaching preparation.

Serving The Needs Of Homeless Library Patrons: Legal Issues, Ethical Concerns, And Practical Approaches, Paul Kaidy Barrows

School of Information Student Research Journal

While cognizant of their social mission, public libraries often still have found it challenging to serve one of their most marginalized constituencies - the homeless. However, bound by legal mandate as well as American Library Association (ALA) core values of access, democracy, and serving the public, libraries must find ways to serve the needs of poor and homeless patrons. This paper describes the demographics and characteristics of homelessness, explores legal and ethical issues with regard to library services, identifies selected model library programs that serve this population effectively, and provides practical guidance and recommendations to public libraries and librarians struggling …

This paper discusses the benefits that accrue from having a healthy old age population. Such includes poverty reduction, stress free ageing, assisting in taking care of young ones. It examines the role of information in enhancing healthy ageing in Africa. …

Sing A Song Of Sixpence: The Birds We Found In The Web-Scale Discovery Pie, Sarah Fabian, Susann Devries, Sara Memmott

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012

The use of the web-scale discovery product Summon has changed the ways in which EMU librarians provide research instruction to students, from beginner to graduate. Librarians were pleasantly surprised to realize that they could spend more time focusing on making sense of academic sources and less time teaching database-specific searching tips. This has strengthened instruction librarians’ emphasis on evaluation of sources in all instruction sessions, regardless of whether they involve the use of Summon. Presenters will also discuss user feedback and the other benefits and challenges of using a web-scale discovery product.

House Of Cards: The Academic Library Media Center In The Era Of Streaming Video, Rachel King

Brooklyn Library Faculty Publications

In a time of increasing financial pressures on universities, the expense of library resources—and the potential for cost inflation—threaten the academic library collection. This article asks whether the academic library media center will be able to continue to offer a stable inventory of films, given the legal and commercial structures currently in place. It provides a history of the film industry’s interactions with its intermediaries, forecasts some of the obstacles to ongoing feature film affordability and access in libraries, offers strategies for librarians, and suggests some cause for hope.
