Standardised Library Instruction Assessment: An Institution-Specific Approach, Shannon M. Staley, Nicole A. Branch, Tom L. Hewitt

Introduction
We explore the use of a psychometric model for locally-relevant, information literacy assessment, using an online tool for standardised assessment of student learning during discipline-based library instruction sessions.

Method
A quantitative approach to data collection and analysis was used, employing standardised multiple-choice survey questions followed by individual, cognitive interviews with undergraduate students. The assessment tool was administered to five general education psychology classes during library instruction sessions.

Analysis
Descriptive statistics were generated by the assessment tool. Results. The assessment tool proved a feasible means of measuring student learning. While student scores improved on every survey question, there was uneven …

Use Of Electronic Resources Among Academics At The University Of Karachi, Munira Nasreen Ansari, Bushra Adeeb Zuberi

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

A sample of seventy faculty from the University of Karachi Faculty of Arts were surveyed. The study explores the University of Karachi's facilities for using electronic resources. Some departments have fully-equipped computer labs, while some have a few computers. A few departments also provide computers to individual academics in their offices. An Internet connection is available to 92.9 percent of the departments. A majority of the academics have computer skills that facilitate the use of electronic resources, although a majority have little knowledge of electronic resources, which is not a positive aspect of the findings. Foreign Languages In Academic Librarianship: A Survey Of Skills, Use, And Perceptions, Brian Vetruba

WashU Libraries Publications

No comprehensive study of academic librarians’ attitudes and perceptions toward foreign language skills in libraries has occurred. Similarly, the question of how librarians use foreign languages has only been cursorily examined. The authors conducted an online survey in the spring of 2007 asking academic librarians in the US and Canada about their knowledge of non—English languages, use of languages professionally, and the perceived value of language skills. Results indicate substantial use of and value placed on language skills. Of the 1,858 respondents, more than 25 percent reported using foreign languages daily and over 75 percent desire better language skills to …

In 1990, ARL published SPEC Kit 165 Cultural Diversity Programming in ARL Libraries and SPEC Kit 167 Minority Recruitment and Retention in ARL Libraries. Both of these documents provided a wealth of information about library programs and services that addressed the needs of a diverse user group, minority staff recruitment and retention strategies, and approaches to managing an ethnically/culturally diverse workforce. While survey results in those SPEC Kits indicated that progress had been made since the 1960s, respondents indicated they thought there was much more to do to ensure that academic and research library staff are representative of all …
