Change Management In Libraries: An Essential Competency For Leadership, Catherine B. Soehner Jun 2014

Change Management In Libraries: An Essential Competency For Leadership, Catherine B. Soehner

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

In this era of shrinking budgets and advancing technology, libraries inevitably need to change to keep up with the times. This is especially true in regards to changes in the Information Technology (IT) services provided by libraries. Some traditional services are no longer used and others must be rearranged so that the library remains a vital component of the campus. Reorganization of personnel often takes place to accommodate these changes. Organizational change may initially appear overwhelming, especially if it involves many people with strongly held opinions and beliefs about maintaining traditional library services. However, a structured process, transparency, and effective …

Problem Lah! Learning To Tell The Story Of Continuous Assessment And Improvement, Tamera Hanken Jun 2014

Problem Lah! Learning To Tell The Story Of Continuous Assessment And Improvement, Tamera Hanken

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

To succeed organizations rely on the purposeful application of the management functions, planning, organizing, leading and controlling, i.e., assessment. Assessment involves the collection and analysis of service and performance data to inform planning, organizing and leading-- opening the door to a culture of assessment and continuous improvement. Like other organizations responding to ever challenging economies and ever changing customer expectations, libraries are examining continuous improvement methods such as Lean, or Six Sigma, to ensure operations and services are customer focused and can be continuously assessed and improved with limited resources. Librarians though, often lack a general understanding of assessment and …

Publarians And Lubishers: Role Bending In The New Scholarly Communications Ecosystem, Nancy Maron, Sylvia Miller, Charles Watkinson, Anne Kenney

Charleston Library Conference

It has been said that the work of publishers and librarians will merge over time until we are all publarians and lublishers. Do we still envision a shared future? As new publishing programs within libraries and experimental publisher-library collaborations continue to challenge us to move outside of our comfort zones, are we learning from each other? What are some practical, down-to-earth ways that we can take advantage of each other’s expertise? How can we produce and market scholarly content in a more integrated way to meet the needs of scholars in a digital-information ecosystem, without duplicating effort on separate tracks? …

What Provosts Think Librarians Should Know, Jeanine Stewart, Elizabeth Paul, John Vaughn, James J. O'Donnell

Charleston Library Conference

Three senior leaders will reveal what Provosts worry about when they think about libraries. Charged to be frank and direct, they will talk about what they value in libraries, but also about what the challenges are that they face that affect how they think about libraries. Budget, facilities, and their perception of what faculty and students want and need will all play into this. This session is an opportunity for a frank exchange of views with real provosts—without worrying about how they react!

Introducing Agile Principles And Management To A Library Organization, Daniel Forsman, Peter Hansson

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Libraries are pressured to adapt to changing conditions due to user demands, behavior, emerging technologies and a need for cost-efficient solutions. Software companies have turned to agile development to stay competitive and to deliver working solutions in a short timeframe. Agile processes are built upon co-operation, iterative workflows and delivering working solutions with a high business value. Agile development and management in an agile organization constitutes a controlled framework of principles with a promise to ensure that the organization focuses on the right things and is able to adapt to new needs.

The Maker/Leader: Leading From The Middle Through Innovation, John Jackson, Young Lee, Cynthia Orozco Apr 2014

The Maker/Leader: Leading From The Middle Through Innovation, John Jackson, Young Lee, Cynthia Orozco

Librarian Publications & Presentations

Start-up culture is changing the way we contextualize the future of libraries. It asks us to reconsider what we traditionally understand to be best practices for organizational structure, innovative work, marketing, and communication. Most importantly, it has redefined the role of the leader who, rather than being the person at the top of the org chart, is a person who can lead through what he or she builds. We call this person the Maker/Leader. In this session, we answered the questions: “What is a Maker/Leader?” and “How can we lead from all levels within our organization but especially through what …

“It Is Silly To Hide Your Most Active Patrons”: Exploring User Participation Of Library Space Designs For Young Adults In The United States, Anthony Bernier, Mike Males, Collin Rickman

Faculty Publications

This article advances the first attempt to collect and examine empirical data on young adult (YA) spaces in public libraries from institutions across the United States by surveying current practices in new and renovated buildings. Analysis of an online survey of 257 library and information science (LIS) professionals produced an innovative Youth Participation Index (YPI) used to document the relative intensities of youth involvement in the design and execution of YA spaces. Libraries claiming higher levels of youth participation reported significant quality service improvements across a wide range of outcomes. However, after several decades of advocating for youth involvement in …

A Community Of Practice: Librarians In A Biomedical Research Network, Danielle P. De Jager-Loftus, David Midyette, Barbara Harvey

Scholarly Papers and Articles

Providing library and reference services within a biomedical research community presents special challenges for librarians, especially those in historically lower-funded states. These challenges can include understanding needs, defining and communicating the library’s role, building relationships, and developing and maintaining general and subject specific knowledge. This article describes a biomedical research network and the work of health sciences librarians at the lead intensive research institution with librarians from primarily undergraduate institutions and tribal colleges and universities. Applying the concept of a “community of practice” to a collaborative effort suggests how librarians can work together to provide effective reference services to researchers …

A Method For Evaluating Library Liaison Activities In Small Academic Libraries, Jonathan Miller Jan 2014

A Method For Evaluating Library Liaison Activities In Small Academic Libraries, Jonathan Miller

Faculty Publications

This article presents a practical method for formative, self-reflective assessment of the liaison activities of individual librarians and to evaluate liaison activities in general. Many libraries evaluate their liaison programs, but few evaluate the effectiveness of individual librarians’ efforts within the program.

Librarians of Rollins College redefined and re-branded their liaison program as “Your Librarian.” As part of this effort, the author surveyed the faculty and assessed the program and the effectiveness of individual librarians. The author outlines the liaison responsibilities, the survey instrument, and how the results are analyzed and used in a process of continuous reflective improvement for …

The Triple Bottom Line: Portable Applications And Best Practices For Sustainability In Academic Libraries, Anne M. Casey, Jon E. Cawthorne, Kathleen Delong, Irene M.H. Herold, Adriene Lim

Staff Works - Hunt Library

Triple Bottom Line Accounting (TBLA) refers to a method of measuring the economic, environmental, and community service impacts of an organization rather than the traditional practice of measuring just the financial bottom line. This chapter explores TBLA from a historical point-of-view; offers examples in higher education and discusses the implications for academic libraries. It concludes with ideas for the implementation of TBLA in libraries.

From An Autonomous To A Collaborative Website Redesign Process: The University Of Denver Libraries Experience, Shea-Tinn Yeh, Christopher C. Brown Jan 2014

From An Autonomous To A Collaborative Website Redesign Process: The University Of Denver Libraries Experience, Shea-Tinn Yeh, Christopher C. Brown

Collaborative Librarianship

Librarians traditionally have insisted on designing and developing the library’s website in-house. An inhouse developed website allows librarians full control of its design, content, and delivery. The library website is also distinguished by its research orientation compared to the university’s marketing-driven purposes. However, in the age of gaining competitive advantage by promoting campus branding, shared services, and collaborative initiatives by various administrative units, libraries could be a stronger partner with other campus departments. This article describes the University of Denver Libraries’ transformation from an autonomous information silo to an integrated Web portal within the University’s Marketing & Communication division. In …

Seeking The Will Of God: The Information Seeking Experiences Of The Leaders Of Nova Scotia Churches In Transition, David H. Michels Jan 2014

Seeking The Will Of God: The Information Seeking Experiences Of The Leaders Of Nova Scotia Churches In Transition, David H. Michels

PhD Dissertations

Christian Churches in Nova Scotia are facing economic, social, and theological stresses. In response many are engaged in processes of restructuring and renewal. Leaders are initiating and managing these change processes, and they are seeking information to make their decisions, and “God’s will for their churches.” Very little is known about how church leaders seek, gather, evaluate, and use information in their decision-making. In this study I asked the question: “Of the Nova Scotia churches in transition, what are the information seeking experiences of their leaders?” Using ethnographic methods at three church sites, I explored this particular context. I gathered …

Management Of Content Development And Subject Engagement Through An Arts Matrix Model: A Case Study, Casey D. Hoeve, Ellen R. Urton, Thomas W. Bell Jan 2014

Management Of Content Development And Subject Engagement Through An Arts Matrix Model: A Case Study, Casey D. Hoeve, Ellen R. Urton, Thomas W. Bell

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

From 2007 - 2009, Kansas State University Libraries (K-State Libraries) committed to strategically assess and redevelop their organizational structure. The Libraries’ Strategic Plan and position redistributions commenced in 2007 and 2009 respectively, with adjustments in 2010 to accommodate the university’s “K-State 2025” Strategic Plan. Together, these plans changed the roles of former subject librarians, dividing and transferring responsibilities for outreach, reference, instruction, and collection development. Among the more significant changes was the creation of departments devoted to patron groups, rather than specific academic disciplines. Illustrating how the reorganization changed the roles of traditional library services, this chapter will outline the …

We present an analysis of the articles published in the Journal of Management Studiessince its inception to assess to what extent JMS has: maintained its leading international ranking; maintained its founding mission as a broad based management journal; and remained a broad based management journal compared to other general management journals. In terms of its impact factor and citations despite reaching a low point in 2001, we find that JMS today ranks higher than it has ever done throughout its 50‐year history. From our content analysis covering the life‐cycle of JMS, we find four areas have been the most frequently …

Review Of Reflecting On The Future Of Academic And Public Libraries By Peter Hernon And Joseph R. Matthews, W. Bede Mitchell Jan 2014

Review Of Reflecting On The Future Of Academic And Public Libraries By Peter Hernon And Joseph R. Matthews, W. Bede Mitchell

University Libraries: Faculty Publications

Review Excerpt: A book about trends and issues shaping the evolution of American libraries by Peter Hernon and Joseph Matthews is almost self-recommending. The authors have many years of teaching, research, and service to the profession under their belts and are recognized as significant and influential leaders. Reflecting on the Future of Academic and Public Libraries offers guidance to library leaders on how to anticipate and manage change. Hernon and Matthews fear that librarians who are reactive and deal only incrementally with today’s profound challenges will preside over the withering of libraries into little used warehouses of legacy collections. The …

The Public Library As Health Information Resource?, Mary Grace Flaherty May 2013

The Public Library As Health Information Resource?, Mary Grace Flaherty

School of Information Studies - Dissertations

Public libraries have adapted a variety of services into their institutional missions, including: promoting early literacy, publicly available Internet access, children's summer reading programs, and the dissemination of tax forms. Libraries are disproportionately rural institutions, often serving people with limited health care access. Thus, by public demand they have evolved to become important resources for rural health consumers to acquire information. Some public libraries have approached this role by subscribing to health databases, or by providing a link on their homepage to a health resource such as MedlinePlus, but most have undertaken little organizational change to meet growing patron demand. …

Hubs And Centers As Transitional Change Strategy For Library Collaboration, Julie Speer, Brian Mathews, Tyler Walters

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Libraries of science and technology universities worldwide are adapting to a changing environment where cyberinfrastructure, eResearch, and new technology-intensive approaches to teaching and learning are transforming the very nature of universities. While many have adopted new technologies and the resources and expertise to manage them, this is only an initial step. Libraries are experimenting with organizational models that will transform their work capacity and expertise. The goal of these libraries is being an entity that feeds and produces collaborative synergies between faculty, students, information professionals, and technologists. Virginia Tech, among the top research universities in the United States, and its …

Current library trends and ongoing shifts are driven by numerous factors including macroeconomic environments, technological impacts, and institutional changes. Strategic needs are as varied as the many individual libraries and their circumstances, but the need is universal for thoughtful leadership in navigating change. While worldlows adapt to changing environments in the short term, long-term shifts require thoughtful leadership and long-range thinking. As libraries and collection management navigate continuing shifts, businesses face similar challenges; this article distills strategies' philosophical underpinnings from library and business scholarship.
