Legal And Medical Education Compared: Is It Time For A Flexner Report On Legal Education, Robert M. Hardaway Jan 1981

Legal And Medical Education Compared: Is It Time For A Flexner Report On Legal Education, Robert M. Hardaway

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

The purpose of this Article is to explore the common elements of legal and medical education and to compare the reform movements in each profession, with a view toward finding an explanation for the widely differing conditions that exist today in the education of each profession. For example, why is it that medical education can provide facilities and training costing up to ten times that provided law students? Why do medical schools receive outside financial support paying up to 95% of the costs of medical education while law schools are supported primarily by tuition and fees? Why do medical students …

Problems In Clinical Integration: A Case Study Of The Integrated Clinical Program Of The University Of Denver College Of Law, Robert M. Hardaway Jan 1981

Problems In Clinical Integration: A Case Study Of The Integrated Clinical Program Of The University Of Denver College Of Law, Robert M. Hardaway

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

In 1979, the University of Denver College of Law Student Office faced many of the problems associated with a non-integrated clinical program. Largely through the energies of a new dean, and a reform-minded faculty that was willing to experiment, a new integration model was implemented. The purpose of this article is to examine the implementation of the integration model chosen at the University of Denver. This article will explain why a particular model was chosen over other integration models and how the implementation of this model resulted in an integrated clinical program.

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This article will discuss the findings of the annual Employment Report of the National Association for Law Placement (NALP) as they relate to the employment patterns of black law school graduates. The NALP surveys provide a reliable and informative picture of legal employment in this country. This article will present the background and methodology of the Employment Survey in order to aid in the interpretation of the data.

Mid-City Law Center: Opportunity For Academic Innovation, Andrew S. Watson Jan 1981

Mid-City Law Center: Opportunity For Academic Innovation, Andrew S. Watson

Seattle University Law Review

This paper will explore some aspects of legal educaton in the context of the Norton Clapp Law Center, a new mid-city law school complex. The innovations in this Center will bring certain educational hazards, many of which are at the center of recent pedagogical discussions about law schools. This paper attempts to identify these hazards and contemplate ways to forestall them. I will not explore these issues as either a lawyer, an economist, a sociological or anthropological analyst. Rather, my observations will be those of a working psychiatric clinician who is a long-time member of a law faculty, and who …

Balzacian Legality: A Proposal For Natural Law Juridicial Standards Of Legality, Thomas E. Carbonneau Jan 1981

Balzacian Legality: A Proposal For Natural Law Juridicial Standards Of Legality, Thomas E. Carbonneau

Faculty Scholarship

The task of the present article is twofold. First, it represents an attempt to make an original English language contribution to the continuing interdisciplinary inquiry, begun in France, into the presence of law in Balzac's The Human Comedy, by focusing upon themes and novels that have not been the subject of previous individual study. Second, it seeks to contribute to an area of growing interest to legal scholars in the United States – the study of law and literature – by providing an example of the insights one French novelist with legal training and experience had into questions that …

Change And Continuity In Legal Education, Roger C. Cramton Jan 1981

Change And Continuity In Legal Education, Roger C. Cramton

Michigan Law Review

Within this maelstrom of accelerating change, the American law school remains, by comparison, an island of stability. Change there has been; one of the purposes of this piece is to chronicle some major recent changes. But in broad outline the structure, method, and content of American legal education has remained remarkably untouched. Whether this demonstrates that American legal education is remarkably flexible in its adaptation to a changing legal environment or that it is irrelevant to social change, I leave to the reader.

Four Issues In The Accreditation Of Law Schools, Thomas L. Shaffer Jan 1981

Four Issues In The Accreditation Of Law Schools, Thomas L. Shaffer

Journal Articles

Most of the people who want to become lawyers in the United States have to come to terms with the American Bar Association. The ABA, in form and in tradition a voluntary association of lawyers, is a virtual governmental regulator of legal education.

People who want to become lawyers do not have to join the ABA—any more than people who are already lawyers have to join—but, in most states, a potential lawyer cannot sit for the bar examination unless he has first obtained a law degree from a school approved by the ABA. And, although in form and tradition the …

Law Schools And Other Reformatories, Norval Morris Nov 1980

Law Schools And Other Reformatories, Norval Morris

Dalhousie Law Journal

It is, of course, a great and undeserved honor for me to be offering this year's Horace E. Read Memorial Lecture. The slightest acquaintance with Dean Read's career reveals the range and quality of his contributions to the law, to the institutions of society and to legal education. It is a great pleasure to be playing a role in these annual memorial celebrations. His life is a model of service and scholarship to all who wish to live the life of the law at its higher levels and refutes those who see our profession as narrow or intellectually confined. Nevertheless, …

Universitd De Moncton's Common Law School: A Unique Experience, Pierre Patenaude Nov 1980

Universitd De Moncton's Common Law School: A Unique Experience, Pierre Patenaude

Dalhousie Law Journal

At their founding, the nine predominantly anglophone provinces of Canada adopted the English legal system patterning their legal institutions upon those of Britain and accepting English public and private law as it then existed. Quebec, on the other hand, modelled its legal system on that of France and most of the private law of Quebec is of French origin. As a result of this historical divergence, French language legal education in Canada, which has hitherto existed only in Quebec, has trained civilian lawyers who are unable to practise in other Canadian provinces. The result of the situation has been that …
