This paper unpacks my experiences as a Group Leader for The Experiment in Argentina, Nicaragua/Cuba, and South Africa, analyzing my approach to the Group Leader role and how it affected my …

An Investigation Into Full Range Leadership And Leadership Development Methods In Public Parks And Recreation Organizations In California, Heather Vilhauer

Doctoral Dissertations

As current public parks and recreation organizational leaders age and retire, it will become important for qualified professionals to be prepared to fill these positions. A study by Hurd and McLean (2004) examined the perceived competencies of CEOs in public park and recreation organizations. However, these perceived competencies are not only for the CEOs; all professionals employed in parks and recreation, from administrative leaders to direct service providers, must demonstrate leadership to succeed in their positions (Russell, 2005). Thus, it is crucial for parks and recreation organizations to …

Contextual Leadership: A Systematic Review Of How Contextual Factors Shape Leadership And Its Outcomes, Burak Oc Feb 2018

Contextual Leadership: A Systematic Review Of How Contextual Factors Shape Leadership And Its Outcomes, Burak Oc

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

With roots dating back to Fiedler’s (1978) contingency model, contextual leadership has been one of the most trending topics in leadership research over the last decade. However, although roughly 500 studies have examined the impact of context on leadership and its outcomes, there is neither a systematic approach to nor agreement regarding what constitutes the context for leadership. This is surprising, considering the central role that context plays in leadership: Leadership does not occur in a vacuum, but rather exists in a context where leaders function. This review article uses Johns’s (2006) categorical framework to fully portray the leadership context …

Professional Development In Libraries: One Size Does Not Fit All, Patricia D. Sobczak, Agnes K. Bradshaw

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

With the constantly changing landscape in 21st century libraries, it would seem that professional development would be more important than ever. However, research indicates that few libraries have formal professional development programs and there are mixed messages from library leaders regarding the necessity and importance of professional development. It is no secret that libraries always seem to be facing budget cuts and funding for professional development is often seen as a low priority. We were curious to understand how professional development is viewed and executed in other academic libraries.

Professional development means different things to different people. To some, professional …

Discerning Service: The Leader As Servant And The Ignatian Tradition, Luke Lavin

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Throughout his spiritual autobiography, Ignatius of Loyola humbly refers to himself as the pilgrim. Ironically, it is a group of pilgrims in Herman Hesse s The Journey to The East that inspires Robert Greenleaf s understanding of the servant as leader. In the late 16th century, Ignatius witnessed and was a product of the turbulent European Reformation the reason infusion of the Renaissance, and the expansive globalization of the Age of Exploration. Greenleaf, an executive for AT&T throughout the mid-twentieth century, witnessed the American countercultural movement of the nineteen sixties and the institutionalization of the American workplace. The Invisible Dimension Of Leadership And Culture: Part I, Paul Nakai, Dustin W. Seale

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The ultimate success of any venture and organization is determined by how it is perceived by those it employs as well as by those it serves. Much of the focus to maximize this effect has been localized to the behaviors, attitudes and feelings that seem to accompany this phenomenon. There have been numerous endeavors that train customer service skills, listening, coaching, positive attitudes, quality, etc. Each intervention has yielded insightful results, but have they been able to fulfill their maximal intention?

Developing More Effective Women’S Leadership Development Programs & Addressing The Organizational Barriers That Inhibit Them, Greta M. Hittner

Theses and Graduate Projects

After decades of work to close gender gaps at the highest levels of leadership, organizations are turning to women’s leadership development programs with greater frequency. These programs are often designed to address skill gaps common among women, but have produced limited results. This paper reviews the literature on the gender gap, women’s leadership development programs, and the requisite organizational transformations needed to address the gender gap. The implications are that change must come from both the bottom up by developing women’s leadership skills and from the top down with organizations confronting bias and structural barriers. Only then will organizations fully …

Theses and Graduate Projects

Composting and organic waste reduction has been an important topic in recent years. The large volume of food waste that is generated and sent to landfills is of growing concern for municipalities as they struggle to handle ever increasing waste. Though recycling efforts of glass, paper and metal materials has become more common, the addition of composting organic waste on a large scale is still relatively not established. Composting in restaurants is a growing component to reducing the amount of organic waste that ends up in landfills due to the high volume of waste that they generate. The creation of …

The role of a supportive organizational culture is also central (Lewis, 2001).

Technological advances, globalization, network complexity, and social complexity complicate almost every aspect of our organizations and environments. Leadership educators are challenged with developing leaders who can sense environmental cues, adapt to rapidly changing contexts, and thrive in uncertainty while adhering to their values systems. In a complex leadership context, inadequate leader responses can result in devastating organizational impacts akin to the butterfly effect from chaos theory. This paper advances a simple model for leadership education based on a program we designed to develop leaders who understand the nature of complex systems, reliably use their ethical value systems, are emotionally intelligent …
