The Intake Process In The Affluent County Juvenile Court, Elyce Zenoff Ferster, Thomas F. Courtless
UC Law Journal
Of all juveniles who are arrested, less than half appear before a judge; the rest are informally handled by juvenile intake workers. The authors describe the structure of the juvenile intake process, analyze the criteria used to determine which cases will be handled informally, and propose changes in the system.

Clinical Experience And The College Work-Study Program, James T. Flaherty
Clinical Experience And The College Work-Study Program, James T. Flaherty
Cleveland State Law Review
Mark Twain is often quoted as the source of the remark that "Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it." This quotation is appropriately used for many problems exclusive of the weather. It can also be applied to law school clinical experience and financial aid problems. As applied to weather and clinical programs, the quotation is not always quite accurate, as another often-quoted saying has been equally applicable: "It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness." Without question, many candles have been lighted in the clinical area. It is the purpose of this …
The Not-For-Profit Business Corporation, James K. Weeks
The Not-For-Profit Business Corporation, James K. Weeks
Cleveland State Law Review
The Non-Profit Corporation is usually regarded traditionally from a lay and legal viewpoint as one being engaged in charitable, educational, scientific or social work or a religious endeavor. On the other hand, the Not-for-Profit Corporation is more often engaged in enterprises usually associated with functions of a business corporation. However, as soon as one begins to view these corporations from a definitional standpoint, one is bogged down in an incredibly complicated procedure which does little to clarify the confusion.

Criminal Restitution: A Survey Of Its Past History And An Analysis Of Its Present Usefulness, Richard E. Laster
University of Richmond Law Review
In the complex structure often inappropriately designated the system of criminal justice,a there are few visible signs of consideration for the party who suffers most from criminal activity-the victim. Yet, historically, this was not always the situation, nor is it necessarily true today in countries other than the United States. Even in the United States compensation plans for victims of crime have been passed by a few state legislatures, and most state statutes on probation allow restitution by the criminal to his victim as a condition thereof. In addition, at the less visible levels of the criminal legal process, restitution …
Psychology And The Criminal Law, Paul E. Meehl
Psychology And The Criminal Law, Paul E. Meehl
University of Richmond Law Review
The two opposite errors a lawyer may make in evaluating the social scientist's contribution to law are to be overly critical and hostile, or to be unduly impressed and uncritically receptive. I have seen examples of both mistakes. The extreme form of the first attitude is shown by the lawyer who frankly believes that psychology, psychiatry, and sociology are mostly "baloney," pretentious disciplines which have abandoned common-sense knowledge of human life but whose claim to have substituted scientific knowledge is spurious. I would like to believe that this hostile attitude is always based upon misinformation or ignorance; but unfortunately, if …
Aftermath Of Apprehension: Social Scientist's Response, Richard B. Stuart
Aftermath Of Apprehension: Social Scientist's Response, Richard B. Stuart
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Gold and Williams suggest in National Study of the Aftermath of Apprehension that "It appears, unfortunately, that what legal authorities commonly do upon apprehending a juvenile for his delinquent behavior is worse than not apprehending him at all." If this conclusion is correct, and it is the result of two interrelated studies, then it should influence sweeping programmatic reforms in the social institutions concerned with promoting and safeguarding the development of youth. The intent of this article is to suggest avenues available for this reform both within and beyond the juvenile justice system. Before addressing the implications of the research, …
