Genetics, Genetic Testing, And The Specter Of Discrimination: A Discussion Using Hypothetical Cases, Richard H. Underwood, Ronald C. Cadle

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

A "genetic revolution" is upon us. Techniques for genetic testing have increased in sophistication, and an international effort to map and sequence human DNA—The Human Genome Project ("HGP")—is now well under way. We are beginning to exploit our new found genetic knowledge. Recognition of the relationship between developments in genetic science, law, and public policy, is creeping into the "literature" and into the law school curriculum. Even the popular 60 Minutes television "news magazine" recently did a program on the perils of genetic testing. Still, for lawyers and policymakers at least, the material is not all that accessible.

Gender Differences In Biological And Sociological Predictors Of Crime, Deborah W. Denno Jan 1997

Gender Differences In Biological And Sociological Predictors Of Crime, Deborah W. Denno

Faculty Scholarship

One of the many goals of the Biosocial Study that I directed was determining whether there were gender differences among the numerous possible correlates of crime that the study examined. The purpose of my presentation today is to describe the Biological Study and its results, particularly as they relate to gender differences in crime. Another aim is to respond briefly to some of the potential political reactions to the study, despite its results. I will begin with a quick account of historical attitudes toward gender differences in crime. I will then discuss the Biosocial Study and its major findings relevant …

Next, the author reviews the functions of the public hospital, which include providing care for the poor, prisoners, psychiatric patients, trauma patients, and addicts. A public hospital also has the role of providing emergency and trauma care, while serving a role in disaster management and as the training grounds for the next generation of medical professionals. The closure of public hospitals has become frequent and it does not appear that the current …

Bioethical Consideration Of Maternal-Fetal Issues, Linda Farber Post

The relationship between a pregnant woman and her fetus is unlike any other in law, medicine, or ethics. This Article examines the complexity of the maternal-fetal conflict, focusing on the interests of the woman and the sometimes conflicting interests of her fetus. Part I discusses the typical analytical background of the conflict, explaining the various ethical principles, rights, and obligations involved such as autonomy, beneficence and nonmaleficence, and justice. The Epidemics Of Injecting Drug Use And Blood-Borne Disease: A Public Health Perspective, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In this article, the author first examines the mechanism by which blood-borne disease is transmitted through sharing of injection equipment. Thereafter, he presents a public health strategy for reducing multi-person use of contaminated injection equipment. This strategy includes: repealing or modifying current laws and regulations making possession and distribution of sterile injection equipment a criminal offense; implementing syringe exchange programs to expand access to new syringes for users of injection drugs; and counseling, education, and treatment targeted to injecting drug users (IDUs), including those in the prison and health care system. The objective of a public health approach is not …
