BACKGROUOND: The purpose of this study was to examine resting the metabolic response to the ingestion of a complex containing Citrus Aurantium + Caffeine (CA + C) and if its consumption influences metabolic recovery following a high-intensity anaerobic exercise bout in habitual caffeine users. METHODS: Ten physically active males (25.1 ± 3.9 years; weight 78.71 ± 9.53 kg; height 177.2 ± 4.6 cm; body fat 15.5 ± 3.13%) participated in this study. This study was performed in a double-blind, randomized crossover fashion consisting of two exhaustive exercise protocols. On each visit the participants consumed either a CA + C (100 …

Student-Athlete Compensation: An Alternative Compensation Model For All Athletes Competing In Ncaa Athletics, Mike Stocz, Nicholas Schlereth, Dax Crum, Alonzo Maestas, John Barnes

Kinesiology

The Ed O’Bannon case (O’Bannon v. National Collegiate Athletic Association, 2015) has brought student-athlete compensation to the national spotlight. While the NCAA continues to defend its policy of amateurism, the time for college athlete compensation may soon become a reality (NCAA Division I Manual, 2019). Recent college athlete compensation models have explored revenue sharing models similar to that of professional sports leagues, although previous research failed to develop a compensation model for athletes in sports beyond basketball and football (Huma & Staurowsky, 2013). The current research argues for a more applied, market-economy compensation model to offer fair compensation to collegiate …

Drowning Prevention: Define And Then Gather Evidence Or Gather Evidence To Define?, Nina J. Nyitrai, Suzi Edwards, Nicholas O'Dwyer

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

According to the World Health Organization, drowning fatalities are a neglected public health issue ranked as the third most frequent cause of unintentional death by injury. Data used to record drowning incidents are acknowledged as inaccurate. Recommendations on drowning prevention based on these data are currently not informed by accurate, detailed and reliable evidence. Two modifications to current practice are proposed: 1) an Aquatic Incident Report needs to be developed as an extension of the current workplace incident report to prompt for information commonly not included in current drowning reports; and 2) National Water Safety Plans should be modified to …

Autophagy And Aging: Maintaining The Proteome Through Exercise And Caloric Restriction, Kurt A. Escobar, Nathan H. Cole, Christine M. Mermier, Trisha A. Vandusseldrop

Accumulation of dysfunctional and damaged cellular proteins and organelles occursduring aging, resulting in a disruption of cellular homeostasis and progressive degen-eration and increases the risk of cell death. Moderating the accrual of these defunctcomponents is likely a key in the promotion of longevity. While exercise is knownto promote healthy aging and mitigate age‐related pathologies, the molecular under-pinnings of this phenomenon remain largely unclear. However, recent evidencessuggest that exercise modulates the proteome. Similarly, caloric restriction (CR), aknown promoter of lifespan, is understood to augment intracellular protein quality.Autophagy is an evolutionary conserved recycling pathway responsible for thedegradation, then turnover of cellular proteins …
