Women And Technology On The Great Plains, 1910-40, Katherine Jellson Jan 1988

Women And Technology On The Great Plains, 1910-40, Katherine Jellson

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

What is in store for the homesteader's wife? Nothing but to deteriorate ... the homesteader can do nothing but make a scanty living while his wife and family go unclad and scarely fed, with no conveniences in the home, no society, no preaching ... when you live where you can see sad-faced women, with their children crying about their skirts for things to eat, eager for even a drink of sour milk-good, pretty women, whose hair turns gray in a few weeks· of worry over where the work is coming from to buy flour-we then wonder if Uncle Sam couldn't …

Song Texts And Their Performers: The Centerpiece Of Contemporary Lakota Identity Formulation, R. D. Theisz Apr 1987

Song Texts And Their Performers: The Centerpiece Of Contemporary Lakota Identity Formulation, R. D. Theisz

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

During the 1960s and 1970s both American Indians and non-Indians showed intense interest in and awareness of the Indian world, and many traditional activities became more popular. This boom atmosphere has waned in the late 1980s, and Indian youths and young adults have therefore changed the focus of their search for identity formulation. In this article, I have been concerned with an aspect of Lakota traditionalism that is being granted more and more significance in the Lakota scheme of things-traditional song and dance. I have based the article on my readings in ethnomusicological literature, my informal observations over many years …

The Impact Of Cultural Patterns On Cognition And Intention In Singapore, Chin Tiong Tan, John U. Farley Mar 1987

The Impact Of Cultural Patterns On Cognition And Intention In Singapore, Chin Tiong Tan, John U. Farley

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Ethnicity of models used in advertisements and the advertised product's country of origin are manipulated experimentally to study how attitudes toward advertising and products lead to behavioral intention. A sample of Singaporean students' traditional Eastern values about family and conformity are also examined. Patterns of results for three products are consistent with theoretical predictions of cognitive processes, and attitude-intention links appear stronger than do those in similar tests in the West. Culture has mixed effect.

Plains Indian Agrariaism And Class Conflict, Russel Lawrence Barsh Jan 1987

Plains Indian Agrariaism And Class Conflict, Russel Lawrence Barsh

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Relatively little has been done to trace the political structures of American Indians through the years 1890 to 1940, when reservation economics were undergoing their most dramatic changes. That failure has left the false impression of a fifty-vear institutional vacuum. In fact, the middle years were times of complex reJisrrihutions of power ;md the emergence of indigellous socioeconomic classes. It was also perhaps the earliest period in which Plains Indians enjoyed anything like an Americanstyle, decentralized elective democracy. Federal programs shifted the control of the Indians' food supply. From being skilled hunter- organizers they became recipients of gc)\"ernnwnt patronage, heelme …

Leadership Selection In Canadian Indian Communities, Reforming The Present And Incorporating The Past, J Anthony Long, Menno Boldt Jan 1987

Leadership Selection In Canadian Indian Communities, Reforming The Present And Incorporating The Past, J Anthony Long, Menno Boldt

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

With improving prospects of achieving a greater measure of political autonomy for their governments, native Indian leaders in Canada are beginning to look seriously at reforming internal tribal/band political structures. Their objectives arc to establish band governments that meet the present social and economic needs of Indian peoples as well as reflect traditional political values. A "hand" is a legal entity specified in the Indian Act, a federal statute that has governed Indians in Canada since shortly after Confederation. In most instances the band corresponds to traditional tribal social and political organization, and these concepts are now often used interchangeably. …

The Transition From Farming To Ranching In The Kansas Flint Hills, Joseph V. Hickey, Charels E. Webb Jan 1987

The Transition From Farming To Ranching In The Kansas Flint Hills, Joseph V. Hickey, Charels E. Webb

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

For more than a century the Flint Hills have been a stronghold of the livestock industry, an area of Kansas devoted almost exclusively to the feeding and breeding of cattle. One of the last large segments of tall grass prairie that once stretched from Canada to Texas and from Kansas to Indiana, the Flint Hills region covers some five thousand square miles of rolling hills and narrow valleys in east central Kansas. The Flint Hills embrace all or parts of thirteen counties: Butler, Chase, Chautauqua, Cowley, Elk, Geary, Greenwood, Lyon, Marion, Morris, Pottawatomie, Riley and Wabaunsee (fig. 1).1

Time In The African Tradition, E. Kofi Agorsah Jan 1987

Time In The African Tradition, E. Kofi Agorsah

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

The article describes the African concept of time. The African concept of time is one that has never been properly understood by non-Africans. The reason probably lies in the fact that in Africa time becomes tied-in to activities of the season, day or night rather than in terms of a large solar clock or calendar. The African seasons are not thought of as stretching evenly, but rather are considered as periods in a chain of events one gradually culminating into another.

The Validity Of The Kinetic Family Drawing As A Measure Of Self-Concept And Parent/Child Relationship Among Chinese Children In Taiwan, Mei-Mei Cho Jan 1987

The Validity Of The Kinetic Family Drawing As A Measure Of Self-Concept And Parent/Child Relationship Among Chinese Children In Taiwan, Mei-Mei Cho

Dissertations

Problem

Valid psychological instruments for use with Chinese children in Taiwan are scarce. The present study attempted to validate the Kinetic Family Drawing as a measure of the self in the family context as well as the perceived parent-child relationship among Chinese children in Taiwan, and to obtain normative data on the KFD for this population.

Method

A correlational research design was used to determine the validity of the KFD using aSemantic Differential (SD) of four concepts--"Father and Me," "Mother and Me," "Me," and "My Whole Family"--as a criterion measure. The KFDs were rated for 80 variables recommended by Burns …

East Malaysia In Malaysian Development Planning, David Lim Jan 1986

East Malaysia In Malaysian Development Planning, David Lim

Support & Other Units (THEi)

Malaysia consists of Peninsular Malaysia and the two East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak. Development planning in Peninsular Malaysia began as early as 1950, while the first plan for the whole of the Malaysian federation founded in 1963 was published in 1966. Have the two East Malaysian states been integrated properly into the various Malaysian plans? Or have they, with their somewhat different economic, political and social backgrounds, been treated as a nuisance element and appeared in the plans only as an afterthought? In any case, is the planning experience of Peninsular Malaysia relevant for solving the problems of …

Dust Bowl Historiography, Harry C. Mcdean Jan 1986

Dust Bowl Historiography, Harry C. Mcdean

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In the late 1930s, Undersecretary of Agriculture Milburn Lincoln Wilson organized "T ravelling Great Plains Schools," culminating three decades of research and reform work in the Great Plains. The schools brought hundreds of rural social scientists together with scores of federal and state policymakers. The schools were broken into two sections, one dedicated to the southern Plains and the other to the northern. Those who attended spent several weeks making their way through the Plains, with care taken to differentiate problems particular to each of the two regions. In the southern Plains, the school spent several days examining the problems …

Review Of The Canadian Prairies: A History By Gerald Friesen, R. T. Harrison Jan 1986

Review Of The Canadian Prairies: A History By Gerald Friesen, R. T. Harrison

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In The Canadian Prairies, Gerald Friesen has taken on a monumental task. Over the past generation prairie historiography has grown too rapidly to lend itself to synoptic treatments. It would therefore be unreasonable to expect specialists to be entirely satisfied with Friesen's treatment of their aspects of prairie history. I know I would like to edit his remarks on prairie literature, yet my informal inquiries suggest that this book is highly respected both by professional historians and by prairie pioneers, who find that Friesen's narration rings true to their actual experiences. One of Friesen's greatest achievements is in making …

Review Of Loren Eiseley: The Development Of A Writer By E. Fred Carlisle And Loren Eiseley By Leslie E. Gerber And Margaret Mcfadden, Nancy Bernhardt Holland Jan 1986

Review Of Loren Eiseley: The Development Of A Writer By E. Fred Carlisle And Loren Eiseley By Leslie E. Gerber And Margaret Mcfadden, Nancy Bernhardt Holland

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Students of Loren Eiseley who have long looked forward to an account of his life more complete than that found in All the Strange Hours, the episodic and ruminative volume Eiseley designated as his autobiography, have new grounds for disappointment. E. Fred Carlisle in Loren Eiseley: The Development of a Writer and Leslie E. Gerber and Margaret McFadden in the Loren Eiseley volume of Ungar's Literature and Life series provide some pleasant reading but fail to capture the essential Eiseley.

Rural Social Organization In A Semiarid African Country The Case Of Botswana, Louise Formann Jan 1986

Rural Social Organization In A Semiarid African Country The Case Of Botswana, Louise Formann

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Environmental determinism has long been discredited in explaining the social organization of pastoral and agro-pastoral peoples. I Today the effect of climate on social organization is recognized as mediated by social, economic, and political factors. 2 Thus, social organization in Botswana reflects the influence of a wide variety of factors, among them Christian missionaries, interethnic warfare, past and continuing aggression of South Africa, introduction of the iron plow, British colonialism, Boer traders, discovery of minerals (most recently diamonds), international donor aid, and so on. Over the past century there have been substantial changes in a number of important trends: life …

Abideth Forever? Global Use Of Semiarid Lands In The Interwar Years, J. M. Powell Jan 1986

Abideth Forever? Global Use Of Semiarid Lands In The Interwar Years, J. M. Powell

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

I have undertaken a highly selective Cook's Tour in this article, attempting to integrate our understanding of semiarid lands around the globe. The focus is concentrated on the period between the two great wars when new nationalisms, old imperial networks, and the burgeoning ambitions of scientists combined to create new systems of land use in the semiarid regions, but a few sorties have been made into earlier and later periods to assist the interpretation of specific projects. My own country, Australia, is used as the starting point for the tour, but the influence of American Donald Worster's Dust Bowl (1979) …

Children And The Environment: Work, Play And Learning In Rural Sudan, Cindi Katz Jan 1986

Children And The Environment: Work, Play And Learning In Rural Sudan, Cindi Katz

Publications and Research

In agricultural economies, environmental learning and the use of environmental knowledge are central practices of social reproduction. The former is important because it encompasses the acquisition of important vocational skills and knowledge, and the latter because it is often integral to the work of providing or procuring basic needs goods and services. In these societies children learn about the environment--that is, about agriculture, animal husbandry and the use of local resources-- largely in the course of their work and play in a variety of settings. In rural areas of the Third World the transition to capitalist relations of production is …
