The Eritrean People's Liberation Front: A Case Study In The Rhetoric And Practice Of African Liberation, Tsenay Serequeberhan Jan 1989

The Eritrean People's Liberation Front: A Case Study In The Rhetoric And Practice Of African Liberation, Tsenay Serequeberhan

William Monroe Trotter Institute Publications

The views of the various African thinkers, which will be systematically explored in this Study, are neither "true" in any absolute sense, nor are they an "ideology" or false consciousness. Rather, they are the self-expression of an open-ended historical process. The works of Fanon, Cesaire, Cabral, etc., with which we shall be engaged in formulating the overall perspective of the struggle for African freedom as a discourse aimed at reclaiming history, are the self-expression of this process itself. These works are the artful and effective self-presentation of those engaged in the struggle, i.e., the rhetoric of African liberation.

The basic …

Ethnic Women Homesteading On The Plains Of North Dakota, H. Elaine Lindgren Jan 1989

Ethnic Women Homesteading On The Plains Of North Dakota, H. Elaine Lindgren

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Women as well as men took advantage of government land policies that encouraged settlement on the Great Plains. Researchers have replaced earlier stereotypes that emphasized the reluctance of women to participate in the settlement process by more dynamic and realistic conceptualizations that portray women as courageous, enthusiastic, and adventuresome. 1

Review Of The World Of The Crow Indians: As Driftwood Lodges, C. Adrian Heidenreich Jan 1989

Review Of The World Of The Crow Indians: As Driftwood Lodges, C. Adrian Heidenreich

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In this relatively short book, Frey seeks to describe the world view of the Crow (Apsaalooke) Indians of Montana. He places his description within the sociocultural context of the contemporary reservation and uses two key metaphors drawn from the Crow people, first, shifting bundles of driftwood that lodge and cling together in a turbulent river, and second a "medicine" or wagon wheel where the hub and the circumference are connected by distinct spokes. The Crow world is interpreted as one in which everything-human, animal, plant, land, and spirit-is interconnected, and the metaphors provide "symbolism of diversity and unity, receptivity and …

Review Of The Road To Rebellion: Class Formation And Kansas Populism, 1865-1900, Robert W. Cherny Jan 1989

Review Of The Road To Rebellion: Class Formation And Kansas Populism, 1865-1900, Robert W. Cherny

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

During the six decades since publication of John Hicks's The Populist Revolt, scholars have produced highly diverse interpretations of the Populist movement of the 1890s. Scott G. McNall, professor of sociology at the University of Kansas, contributes to that dialogue by using Kansas Populism to explore concepts in political economy and especially in the nature of class identity.

Freedon And Control In Laura Ingalls Wilder's De Smet, John E. Miller Jan 1989

Freedon And Control In Laura Ingalls Wilder's De Smet, John E. Miller

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Faith in the future, the virtues of persistence and hard work, the beneficence and occasional destructiveness of nature, the centrality of family, and the search for community are dominant themes of Laura Ingalls Wilder's books for children; one more theme is freedom. 1 But this freedom is never conceived of as absolute; rather, it is subject to a variety of constraints-external and internal-that interact with it in uneasy tension. The Ingalls family moved west to Dakota Territory in 1879 because of Pa's quest for freedom from the constrictions hemming him in on the more settled frontier. Farther west, he believed, …

Women's Contribution To The Family Farm, Richard W. Rathge Jan 1989

Women's Contribution To The Family Farm, Richard W. Rathge

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Our recognition of women's involvement in Great Plains agriculture is frequently linked to stereotyped images and a romanticized perspective on farmers. These notions have been cultivated over time in the absence of careful research or historical documents that realistically detail women's work on the family farm. Except for collections of oral histories, letters, and diaries, we have relatively few written records of rural women's agricultural heritage in the Great Plains. Traditional images of women and girls on farms show them as helpmates whose labor is only indirectly related to agriculture. 1 Their activities center predominantly on family and domestic chores. …

Commercial Activities And The Geography Of Movement In A West African Urban Market: A Study Of Market-Stall Traders In Onitsha With Implications For Transport Policy, Krys Chukwuma Ochia Jan 1989

Commercial Activities And The Geography Of Movement In A West African Urban Market: A Study Of Market-Stall Traders In Onitsha With Implications For Transport Policy, Krys Chukwuma Ochia

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study is to understand the non home-based travel behavior of urban market traders in Onitsha, Nigeria, where 58-70% of the labor force is engaged in trading.

Relevant trip-inducing variables--gender, location, a means of personal transportation, size of stall and, type of good sold--were selected to assist in theorizing about the travel behavior of traders. Using a systematic sampling methodology, 246 stalls were selected and the MLR model was applied in data analyses.

The results show that a typical stall is occupied by either one or two traders. There are three male traders for every female trader …

Of Generality And Specificity – A Suggested Approach Toward The Development Of An Autochthonous Singapore Legal System, Andrew B.L. Phang Jan 1989

Of Generality And Specificity – A Suggested Approach Toward The Development Of An Autochthonous Singapore Legal System, Andrew B.L. Phang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This very brief essay seeks to sketch out as well as consider an approach toward legal analysis and reasoning that would aid in the development of an autochthonous Singapore legal system, ' and that, in any event, would probably also be relevant even in more generalized ad hoc situations. It is assumed that many, if not most, of those involved in the discipline of Singapore law desire the construction of an autochthonous legal system, although the skeptic might find - as just mentioned - the approach suggested here of some utility as well.

Womens Culture In The Great Plains : An Introduction, Helen A. Moore Jan 1988

Womens Culture In The Great Plains : An Introduction, Helen A. Moore

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Women, including plains Indians, European immigrants, blacks, and Chicanas, have always been essential to the development of Great Plains culture. Bounded by the patriarchal traditions associated with "women's place" in western society, women's diverse experiences are refracted through prisms of class, race, family structure, and work to create women's cultural legacies. In March 1987, scholars and other conference participants gathered in Lincoln, Nebraska, at the eleventh annual symposium of the Center for Great Plains Studies to address the theme of women's culture.

Structure Of Agriculture And Women's Culture In The Great Plains, Cornella Butler Flora, Jan L. Flora Jan 1988

Structure Of Agriculture And Women's Culture In The Great Plains, Cornella Butler Flora, Jan L. Flora

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

T he family farm has prevailed as a bastion of petty capitalism in the Great Plains. Although capital and labor are highly differentiated in the larger society, they are combined in the family production unit in Great Plains agriculture. In addition to being the economic base for much of the Great Plains from the settlement period onward, the family farm provided a cultural base from which a series of values emerged. Women were important in reproducing this culture that tended to stress agrarian values and the primacy of the family as building blocks for a community based on the values …
