Juvenile Delinquency In Saudi Arabia, Yousef Ahmed Alromaih
Juvenile Delinquency In Saudi Arabia, Yousef Ahmed Alromaih
Dissertations and Theses
The present study involved an examination of the delinquency problem in Saudi Arabia within the framework of social control theory. Specifically, the study was based on the thesis set forth by Travis Hirschi, i.e., that delinquent acts result when an individual's bond to society is weak or broken. Also taken into account, however, were the findings from the research of Wiatrowski, et al. that suggest a need for a) some modifications in Hirschi's conceptual framework and b) inclusion of socio-economic factors in the social control model.
The Emergence Of The American Agriculture Movement, 1977-1979, John Dinse, William P. Browne
The Emergence Of The American Agriculture Movement, 1977-1979, John Dinse, William P. Browne
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Beginning in late 1977, the media, television in particular, portrayed as a unique cultural phenomenon an emerging American Agriculture Movement (AAM), a pending farm strike, and a depressed farm economy that had caused this mobilization. Much was indeed unique, especially to the individual farmers and the specific manner in which they were attempting to apply political pressures, but the American Agriculture Movement itself was similar to other organizational attempts that have taken place in rural America.
In the following paper we chronicle the emergence of the American Agriculture Movement as a distinct entity, identify the common features in the emergence …
Patterns Of Homicide In North India: Some Sociological Hypotheses, Hans Nagpaul
Patterns Of Homicide In North India: Some Sociological Hypotheses, Hans Nagpaul
Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications
Numerous and varied incidents of homicide are provided. The typical psychiatric and criminological hypotheses appear to be inadequate. Rather a sociological explanation based on rapidly shifting societal major upheavels seem to be a sounder hypothesis.
Small Farmers' Cooperatives In Brazil, 1964-1984 Reasons For Success Or Failure, Henry H. Gerber
Small Farmers' Cooperatives In Brazil, 1964-1984 Reasons For Success Or Failure, Henry H. Gerber
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
This study is concerned with cooperative business enterprises of small farmers. The topic has been chosen because peasants' association in supply and marketing cooperatives is considered an essential element in rural development. The author's field experience leads him to agree in principle with this assumption. But, as exemplified by Brazil, a variety of factors (ecological, sociohistorical, legal, economic and so forth) may hinder or help the inception and survival of cooperatives.
Thus, if a government aims at integrating the small producer into the national economy as supplier and consumer (as in Brazil), measures to implement t~is policy must not be …
Women On The Great Plains Recent Developments Research, Glenda Riley
Women On The Great Plains Recent Developments Research, Glenda Riley
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
During the past dozen years or so, scholars have become increasingly involved in researching the lives and experiences of women on the Great Plains. At the same time, interest in learning more about the lives of all types of western, frontier, farm, and rural women has burgeoned. As a result, researchers now devote their careers to these topics, national conferences convene to disseminate and refine this increasing scholarship, and journals commit theme issues to presenting research results.
This essay is a survey of research developments concerning plainswomen between the early 1970s and the present day. The purpose of such an …
Having A Purpose In Life Western Women Teachers In The Twentieth Century, Courtney Ann Vaughn-Roberson
Having A Purpose In Life Western Women Teachers In The Twentieth Century, Courtney Ann Vaughn-Roberson
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Beginning late in the eighteenth century, social theorists developed an ideology of domesticity, maintaining that women's proper role lay in the care of children, the nurture of the husband, the physical maintenance of the domicile, and the guardianship of both home and social morality.1 Although this ideology helped to propel females into teaching, historians have not agreed on the impact of domestic ideology on women teachers and on the education profession itself. Some scholars conclude that women's easy access to teaching posts turned the classroom into a workshop for motherhood for the average female, perpetuating anti-intellectualism in education to …

Self-Help And Development Planning In The Yemen Arab Republic, Sheila Carapico
Self-Help And Development Planning In The Yemen Arab Republic, Sheila Carapico
Political Science Faculty Publications
Virtually all contemporary development strategies stress the importance of participation by working people in both policy formation and the benefits of economic growth. Development requires .capital formation for investment in the social and economic infrastructures. Unless development investments involve mass organization, representing broad social strata, they tend to benefit only a minority of landed, administrative, or merchant capital elites. The result is an uneven pattern of development throughout the country and very often, declining standards of living for the poor majority. Moreover, numerous studies show that "top-down" programs for involving peasants in local organizations and investment projects have rarely provided …

Willa Cather And The Swedes, Mona Pers
Willa Cather And The Swedes, Mona Pers
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Willa Cather's immigrant characters, almost a literary anomaly at the time she created them, earned her widespread critical and popular acclaim, not least in the Scandinavian countries, a market she was already eager to explore at the beginning of her literary career. Sweden, the first Scandinavian country to "discover" her books, issued more translations of Cather fiction than any other European country. In fact, Sweden was ten years ahead of any other Scandinavian country in publishing the translation of a Cather novel (see table). This article will investigate the publication and reception of Willa Cather's books in Sweden, compare that …

Willa Cather Today An Introduction, Mildred R. Bennett, Susan J. Rosowski
Willa Cather Today An Introduction, Mildred R. Bennett, Susan J. Rosowski
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The essays in this volume were originally presented in June 1983 at the second national seminar on Willa Cather, "Willa Cather Today." For nearly a week, 125 people gathered in Hastings and Red Cloud, Nebraska, some coming from nearby homes and some traveling from twenty-eight other states, India, China, and Sweden. In doing so, participants had in substance one of the most basic ideas in Cather's writing, that place and movement are complementary. In coming to Webster County, participants affirmed the importance of not only place in Cather's writing but also the journeys that connect lives. In 1981, the theme …
Willa Cather Today, James E. Miller Jr.
Willa Cather Today, James E. Miller Jr.
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
From 1947, the year Willa Cather died, until today, Cather studies have expanded from a Nebraska cottage craft to an international industry. During this time the number of publications about her life and work has become formidable. Recently I made an assault on the ever taller mountain of Cather material, and although I have not reached the peak, I have spent considerable time slogging up some treacherous slopes. What I present here is a bundle of my own biases, selective in nature, without any pretense of comprehensiveness. I would like first to take a brief look at three works on …
Philosophical Hermeneutics And The Analects: The Paradigm Of Tradition, Alan Kam Leung Chan
Philosophical Hermeneutics And The Analects: The Paradigm Of Tradition, Alan Kam Leung Chan
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
Hermeneutics, as a philosophical enterprise, is not new; it can be traced back at least to Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768-1834) and Wilhelm Dilthey (1833-1911).1 Yet hermeneutics did not reach its philosophical maturity and acquire the worldwide recognition that it deserves until Hans-Georg Gadamer published his magnum opus, Truth and Method, in 1960.2 Here, with the help of Heidegger, hermeneutics is transformed from a general methodology of the "human sciences" (Geisteswissenschaften) into a full-fledged "practical" philo- sophy.3 With Gadamer, as we shall see, hermeneutics can no longer be under- stood as merely a theory of interpretation; rather, it is to be seen …
Dating And Mating : Attitudes Of Middle Eastern Students In The United States, Gabriel Bejjani
Dating And Mating : Attitudes Of Middle Eastern Students In The United States, Gabriel Bejjani
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The need for this study stemmed from the fact that a large number of Middle Eastern students are coming to the United States of America to seek higher education. This has created a social problem for both the Middle Eastern students and their American counterparts because of the great differences between their cultures in the practice of dating and mating.
The objectives of the study were to examine the opinions of a sample of Middle Eastern students in the United States in regards to dating and mating practices. The sample size was one hundred students.
A literature search of the …
Review Of Plains Families: Exploring Sociology Through Social History By Scott G. Mcnall And Sally Allen Mcnall, J. Allen Williams
Review Of Plains Families: Exploring Sociology Through Social History By Scott G. Mcnall And Sally Allen Mcnall, J. Allen Williams
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Scott and Sally McNall, of the University of Kansas, provide a new and interesting way to teach sociology. Plains Families uses the social history of the Great Plains region of the United States from the 1860s to the present to demonstrate how abstract sociological ideas and concepts are grounded in reality.
A variety of source materials (e.g., letters, diaries, interviews) are used by the authors to construct composite case histories of families. The presentation of each case is followed by a chapter designed to illustrate a major dimension of sociology. The illustration, in turn, affords the reader a much better …
Review Of Men Of The Steel Rails: Workers On The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad, 1869- 1900 By James H. Ducker, Robert H. Zieger
Review Of Men Of The Steel Rails: Workers On The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad, 1869- 1900 By James H. Ducker, Robert H. Zieger
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Using an impressive array of company and union publications, newspapers, directories, and archival materials, James H. Ducker delineates the lives and experiences of the Santa Fe Railroad's labor force. Although he includes three chapters relating to unionism, strike action, and working-class politics, his main focus is on the more private side of his subjects' stories. Even in his chapter on the railroad unions, the author is as interested in the fraternal and social functions they served as in their collective bargaining character.
Ducker carefully places each of his topics in an appropriate historiographical context. When dealing with the strikes of …

Fort Ross: Russian Colony In California, 1811-1841, Kathryn E. Mitchell
Dissertations and Theses
The essential objective of this study was to fill a bibliographic void of secondary source material concerning Russian California. This was accomplished by combining available translations and more specific studies on the subject into one extensive work. Introductory chapters provide: (1) a brief statement regarding Russia's massive eastward expansion through Siberia, to Kamchatka and Alaska; (2) an examination of the nature of the Russian-American Company; and (3) a detailed look at the programs instituted by the Company to provision Alaska and Kamchatka. The establishment of Fort Ross in 1811 is viewed as one of those programs. The settlement's primary function …
