Review Of American Indian Grandmothers: Traditions And Transitions Edited By Marjorie M. Schweitzer, Paula Bennett Oct 2001

Review Of American Indian Grandmothers: Traditions And Transitions Edited By Marjorie M. Schweitzer, Paula Bennett

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This well-researched and deeply warm series of essays is intended to acquaint readers with twentieth-century Indian grandmothers as familial bridges between past cultural embeddedness and an increasingly dismembered culture stretched from its roots in myth and practice. The essays range from sociological monographs replete with statistics to intimate first-hand interpretive accounts from the grandmothers themselves. The historical, geographic, and psychological breadth of the vignettes assures their appeal to a wide range of scholars and ethno-elderphiles.

Schweitzer emphasizes that even when biology is the triggering event for becoming a grandmother, the context of Indian grandmotherhood is culturally construed. Kinship patterns determine …

Relationships Between Community Attributes And Residential Preference In Nonmetropolitan Nebraska, John C. Allen, Rebecca J. Vogt, Soonchul Ko

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This paper examines the residential preferences of rural Nebraskans. Data from the 1998 Nebraska Rural Poll were analyzed at two levels. First, the residential preferences of rural Nebraskans were compared to those of the general population of the United States. Second, the relationships between the attributes of the respondents' current community and their residential preferences were examined. Current community size, the social attributes of the community, and evaluations of local community services were all determined to be important influences on residential preferences. The findings illustrate the possible positive impact on rural Great Plains communities of enhancing social interaction and creatively …

A Phenomenological Case For The Family Farmer As An Environmental Steward, Jim Hanson Oct 2001

A Phenomenological Case For The Family Farmer As An Environmental Steward, Jim Hanson

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This phenomenological analysis concludes that the American family farmer is a steward of the environment in a way that the corporate farmer is not. As a study of consciousness, phenomenology recognizes that family farmers have more sensitive and less selective experience because of living in the farm environment. It draws from the first-hand accounts articulated by family farmers-accounts that reflect their firsthand and direct experiences of the farm environment. Although considered to be irrelevant by many scientists and statisticians, phenomenological accounts of direct experience are important starting points for the scientific study of farmers and their knowledge of environmental problems.

Nationalism As A Contingent Event: Som Ereflections On The Ethio-Eriterean Experience, Mesfin Araya

International Conference on African Development Archives

What is politically significant and what really attracts scholarly research in any nationalism is the awakening of the masses - i.e. the effective transition from elite-based to mass-based nationalism; this study is concerned with that transition in the Eritrean experience in the modern political history of Ethiopia.

Women's Higher Education In Ethiopia Under Three Regimes, 1950-1997, Alem Habtu Aug 2001

Women's Higher Education In Ethiopia Under Three Regimes, 1950-1997, Alem Habtu

International Conference on African Development Archives

A recent World Bank report sums up the condition of the "typical" Ethiopian woman as follows: "She is a victim of her situation, without the capacity to initiate change within the quagmire of her poverty, high fertility, poor health and domestic drudgery" (cited in Ethiopia, NPA, April 1995, pp. 14-15).

Generally speaking, most Ethiopian women live in impoverished subsistence. They are expected to marry early, and bear many children. They lack knowledge of hygiene, nutrition or family planning. They live in conditions of very high maternal, infant and child mortality. Lack of education, high fertility, infant mortality, and generally poor …

Promoting Child Protection Through Community Resources: Care Arrangements For Ethiopian Aids Orphans, Steven L. Varnis Aug 2001

Promoting Child Protection Through Community Resources: Care Arrangements For Ethiopian Aids Orphans, Steven L. Varnis

International Conference on African Development Archives

One of the key development challenges posed by AIDS in Ethiopia is providing care for the vastly increased number of orphans resulting from the pandemic. The organizational initiatives and policy responses will have an impact on a wide range of developmental indicators, as well as on the formative experiences of millions of Ethiopian children in the years to come. This paper explores the strategies and basic assumptions of community based care—which has become the orthodox approach to orphan care in Africa. Two limitations of this approach are discussed. First, it is often based on an outdated understanding and assessment of …

Ethiopia: An Alternative Approach To National Development, Daniel Kendie Aug 2001

Ethiopia: An Alternative Approach To National Development, Daniel Kendie

International Conference on African Development Archives

The existing Ethiopian constitution that is based on ethnicity should be discarded and replaced by another constitution that recognizes territorial nationalism, which manifested itself in historic Ethiopia as regionalism or provincialism. The historically established status of the provinces of Arussie, Bale, Gondar, Harar, Shoa, Sidamo, Tigrai, Wollo, Wollega, and so on, would have to be restored. A federal constitution which corresponds to Ethiopia’s historical experiences, but modified to suit its present conditions, and based on such principles as the rule of law, state secularism, a bill of rights, a system of checks an balances, political and economic pluralism, including the …

Review Of The Family Farmers' Advocate: South Dakota Farmers Union, 1914-2000 By Lynwood E. Oyos, Herbert T. Hoover Jul 2001

Review Of The Family Farmers' Advocate: South Dakota Farmers Union, 1914-2000 By Lynwood E. Oyos, Herbert T. Hoover

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Two themes stand out in this extraordinary analysis of decline in family farm population on the Northern Great Plains since the 1930s. One is the organization of farmers and ranchers as a reaction to economic colonialism and inhospitable natural conditions. Lynwood Oyos properly portrays the Farmers Union as the largest rural organization with a politically liberal disposition in the history of his state. Its leaders, representing as many as 21, 600 members (in 1949), fashioned "a triangle" of functions to include cooperative services, education of members, and lobbying for assistance from both state and national governments. Oyos chronicles the Farmers …

Review Of Lines Of Site: Ideas, Forms, And Materialities Curated By Desmond Rochfort With Ryoji Ikeda, Gary Olson Jul 2001

Review Of Lines Of Site: Ideas, Forms, And Materialities Curated By Desmond Rochfort With Ryoji Ikeda, Gary Olson

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Desmond Rochfort has documented an extraordinary exhibition of printed artworks created in the Canadian West over the past twenty-five years. His perceptive essay in the catalogue, "Printmaking, Technologies and the Culture of the Reproducible Image," discusses the relationship between the tradition of the hand-pulled, limited edition prints of the past five hundred years and the novel technologies of the pixilated, global "Image Culture" employing "multi-reproducible digital imaging" computers.

The exhibition contains the work of a cross section of contemporary artists: twenty-five graduate students, two printmaking technicians, and three printmaking faculty from the University of Alberta. The wide variety of prints, …

Bolshevism And The Avant-Garde: Marxist Ideology And The Aesthetics Of Soviet Film, 1923-28, Garrett H. Booker Jul 2001

Bolshevism And The Avant-Garde: Marxist Ideology And The Aesthetics Of Soviet Film, 1923-28, Garrett H. Booker

History Theses & Dissertations

When Eisenstein's Strike burst onto the cultural scene in 1925, Soviet cinema began a creative odyssey that left to posterity a brilliant collection of films that redefined the manner in which audiences viewed them. Not only was the form of these films dynamic and innovative, but their content captured the heroic actions of a new historical subject, the revolutionary proletariat. As the Soviet State assumed control over the production of films, politics imprinted its indelible mark on the content of these films, especially as Stalin tightened his grip over all aspects of artistic life. The author of this project will …

Housing Policy, Wealth Formation And The Singapore Economy, Sock-Yong Phang Jul 2001

Housing Policy, Wealth Formation And The Singapore Economy, Sock-Yong Phang

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper evaluates the contribution of housing policy in Singapore to financial sector development, housing wealth formation and macro-economic performance, both retrospectively and prospectively. It provides an overview of past housing policies and traces the linkages to the financial sector. Housing policy as effected through the Housing and Development Board and the Central Provident Fund (CPF) hampered the development of the commercial housing loans sector and domestic financial markets, but contributed to the overall growth and stability of the housing loans market and associated financial institutions. Housing policy and the trend of housing asset inflation contributed significantly to the formation …

An Analysis Of Sex Trafficking In The Asian Region In An Era Of Globalization, Corie J. Hammers May 2001

An Analysis Of Sex Trafficking In The Asian Region In An Era Of Globalization, Corie J. Hammers

Dissertations and Theses

Globalization, spurred on by capitalist principles, seeks the integration of countries and their economies into a single global market. Global integration has impacted countries in many ways, often negatively. Phenomena such as the illicit trade in weapons, drugs, and people for their sexual and/or physical labor, have also been facilitated by globalization. Specifically examined in this study were a) patterns of sex trafficking of women and girls in four countries: India, Nepal, the Philippines, and Thailand, and b) the various ways globalization has both impacted women's status within these countries and facilitated the sex trade.

One manifestation of globalization has …

Review Of Black Eyes All The Time: Intimate Violence, Aboriginal Women, And The Justice System Byanne Mcgillivray And Brenda Comaskey, Ross Gordon Green

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Many books have documented the history of colonization and oppression faced by Aboriginal people in Canada, often within the context of discord between First Nations communities and the prevailing justice system. Black Eyes All the Time pushes this analysis to a new and challenging level. Based on a study of twenty-six Aboriginal women interviewed in Winnipeg, this work provides an in-depth and sensitive consideration of the painful topic of intimate violence within Canadian Aboriginal communities.

The women interviewed had all been victims of spousal violence. Quotations from these interviews are effectively interspersed throughout the text. The authors' research findings are …

Review Of The Animals Came Dancing: Native American Sacred Ecology And Animal Kinship By Howard L. Harrod, Christopher Vecsey Apr 2001

Review Of The Animals Came Dancing: Native American Sacred Ecology And Animal Kinship By Howard L. Harrod, Christopher Vecsey

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Over the past several decades Howard Harrod-Oberlin Alumni Professor of Social Ethics and Sociology at Vanderbilt University- has published widely and well regarding the religious history of Great Plains Indians. His latest work examines what he calls "'sacred ecology' ... the sensibility, evident in North Plains cultures, that the world was constituted by powers that took the form of Persons. In hunting cultures, these Persons often appeared in animal form." A non-Indian (indeed, a non-hunter), Harrod has written his book because he thinks that these Native Americans have valuable insights for us all in "reimagining our relationships with the nonhuman …
