No. 07: Evaluating Refugee Protection In South Africa, Jonathan Crush, Vincent Williams
No. 07: Evaluating Refugee Protection In South Africa, Jonathan Crush, Vincent Williams
Southern African Migration Programme
South Africa’s policy on refugees has its origins in the country’s much-criticized Aliens Control Act (96 of 1991) (ACA), which in numerous respects has failed to provide adequate guarantees to applicants (de la Hunt 1998,2002: 123; Human Rights Watch 1998:170; Handmaker 1999a, 1999b). Until the recent implementation of its first ever Refugees Act (Act 130 of 1998) in April 2000, South Africa’s policy on refugees depended on the ACA, with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) responsible for enforcement.
This paper evaluates the process of refugee policy reform that began in 1996. This process led to the Refugees Act in …

Southern African Migration Programme
The movement of skilled people from one country to another is one of the most hotly contested public policy questions today. Debates amongst politicians, academics and bureaucrats about the scale and character of skilled migration, and the policies required to address these movements, are taking place in countries throughout the world (Zweig and Changgui 1995; Odunsi 1996; Phillips 1996; Carrington and Detragiache 1998; Iredale 1998; Iqbal 1999). As the opportunities for skilled personnel to move increases with globalization and the shift to a service economy (Sassen 1988, 1998), as the costs of international travel decrease, and as the ability to …

Australia: An Integrated Curriculum Unit, Grades 2-4, Institute For The Development Of Gifted Education, Ricks Center For Gifted Children, University Of Denver
Ricks Curriculum Units Series
An integrated curriculum is an instructional approach that connects the disciplines to an underlying theme or topic. Immersing students in an integrated-thematic unit provides the backdrop for experiences to occur across the disciplines. Shaping coursework around integrated themes is especially appropriate for gifted students, however using an integrated-thematic curriculum is appropriate for all learners as it develops students' abilities to make connections, to solve problems by looking at multiple perspectives, and to integrate information from different fields of experience. An integrated-thematic curriculum permits students to be active participants in their own learning as they design their own explorations and take …

Good Friday In Omaha, Nebraska: A Mexican Celebration, Maria Arbelaez
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Mexicans and Mexican Americans in Nebraska commemorate Holy Week with a popular display of religious fervor. In semblance with the old religious traditions in Mexico, the Mexicanos, old and new residents, parade through the Omaha streets following the Way of the Cross on Good Friday. Processions, rituals, and plays are not only a yearly Catholic ritual in the streets of Omaha but an essential part of Mexican American and Latino cultural identity. Palm Sunday and the Way of the Cross are but a few of the constituent elements of the growing manifestations of Latino popular culture in the state. The …

One of the basic aims of the Spanish empire was to spread the Christian faith in its colonies. In the Philippines, this materialized with the arrival of Ferdinand Magellan in 1521 and its subsequent colonization by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi in 1565. The regular clergies known as friars were responsible in imparting the Christian faith to the locals who absorbed the new faith wholly, albeit, preserving their traditional beliefs to a certain extent. Though Christianiation was successful, the secularization process whereby parishes were to be handed to the secular clergies was denied. This failure had a Jong lasting effect which …
Time Of Pachakutik: An Examination Of The Ecuadorian Indigenous Movement, Eliza Cooke Kittredge
Time Of Pachakutik: An Examination Of The Ecuadorian Indigenous Movement, Eliza Cooke Kittredge
Honors Theses
The Ecuadorian indigenous movement has emerged in the last decade as the most important social and political movement in the country. The driving organizations behind the movement, CONAIE (Confederadon de Nacionalidades Indigenas del Ecuador), a social organization. and Pachakutik Movimiento Pluri-Nacional (Pluri-national movement), a political organization, have taken different approaches to fortifying indigenous identities, challenging the policies of the Ecuadorian government, and uprooting the subtle but persistent racist ideologies that have been discriminatory and exclusionary for over 500 years. I argue that Pachakutik's involvement within the political system has a greater chance of effecting long-term change for indigenous peoples in …
A Theoretical Proposal For Reaching Irreligious Czech People Through A Mission Revitalization Movement, Petr Činčala
A Theoretical Proposal For Reaching Irreligious Czech People Through A Mission Revitalization Movement, Petr Činčala
Dissertations
The main goal of this study was to develop a theory of missionary outreach to unchurched Czech people which is biblically informed and culturally relevant. The theoretical proposal for a plausible model of churching in the Czech Republic builds on basic theological, philosophical, and conceptual assumptions (chapter 2), a societal analysis of the problem of Czech churching (chapter 3), and a review of the issues relating to the situation of existing churches and religious movements.
Based on Wallace’s theory of revitalization movements a model is developed for starting a missionary movement that aims at reaching today’s unchurched and seemingly irreligious …

This becomes a reality when nationalists hasten the tides of nationalism thereby arousing the intelectuals and awakening the masses. All efforts and sacrifices amount to freeing the motherland from the chains of colonial bondage. The Philippines which was under Spanish domination since 1565 rises against its colonial masters to herald a free nation. The roles and aspirations of the nationalist leaders cannot be denied. They serve as instruments in uniting the intellectuals and the masses and are seen as the prime initiators in the road to revolutions. Jose Rizal, …

Ohio University Press Open Access Books
Surabaya is Indonesia’s second largest city but is not well known to the outside world. Yet in 1900, Surabaya was a bigger city than Jakarta and one of the main commercial centers of Asia. Collapse of sugar exports during the 1930s depression, followed by the Japanese occupation, revolution, and independence, brought on a long period of stagnation and retreat from the international economy. Not until the export boom of the 1990s did Surabaya regain prominence as Southeast Asia’s leading non–capital–city industrial area. Previous thinking on Indonesia is being reassessed in light of recent political and economic upheaval. Surabaya, City of …

He came up with a practical theory and concept of civilization, capable of predicting the future. And although he had a complete ideology serving as a foundation to civilization known as Islamology, he did not deny the role of intellectuals of the society as civilization builders. His …

[Introduction To] National Bolshevism: Stalinist Mass Culture And The Formation Of Modern Russian National Identity, 1931-1956, David Brandenberger
Bookshelf
During the 1930s, Stalin and his entourage rehabilitated famous names from the Russian national past in a propaganda campaign designed to mobilize Soviet society for the coming war. Legendary heroes like Aleksandr Nevskii and epic events like the Battle of Borodino quickly eclipsed more conventional communist slogans revolving around class struggle and proletarian internationalism. In a provocative study, David Brandenberger traces this populist "national Bolshevism" into the 1950s, highlighting the catalytic effect that it had on Russian national identity formation.
Beginning with national Bolshevism's origins within Stalin's inner circle, Brandenberger next examines its projection into Soviet society through education and …
