Implementation Of A Healthy Skin Committee And Education On The Number Of Hospital Acquired Pressure Injuries, Laura Viana
Implementation Of A Healthy Skin Committee And Education On The Number Of Hospital Acquired Pressure Injuries, Laura Viana
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Abstract
Over the years, hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPI) have emerged as a significant challenge in the healthcare industry. Despite significant advancements in healthcare, pressure injuries continue to be a persistent global healthcare issue, closely linked to the safety of patients, affecting patient outcomes, and increasing healthcare costs (Gaspar et al., 2019). HAPIs are associated with increased morbidity and mortality rates. HAPIs are likely to experience longer hospital stays, increased risk of infections, higher treatment costs, and potentially more significant health complications. HAPIs commonly occur in the hospitalized patient and are costly and preventable. Given the implications of HAPIs, there is …
Effect Of Medication Education On Controlled Administration Discrepancies, Francine Lyon
Effect Of Medication Education On Controlled Administration Discrepancies, Francine Lyon
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Quality Improvement (QI) projects aim to enhance specific clinical care processes, patient safety, and healthcare operations. This QI project aims to examine the impact of improved education on medication administration safety and to observe the differences in Blue Sight data reports and medication administration discrepancies in a post-surgical setting. To limit medication errors (ME) and administration discrepancies (Bluesight reports) in acute care settings and reduce potential patient harm, healthcare professionals must review the fundamentals of medication safety, including the five-rights of medication administration. This simple step will ultimately lead to shorter hospital stays, less financial strain for patients and hospital …

The Effect Of Simulation On Self-Confidence And Anxiety Related To Clinical Decision-Making In Undergraduate Bsn Students, Vivian Bowman
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Objective: Nursing students face challenges as they transition to the workplace and juggle the tasks of effective communication, delegation, prioritization, and clinical judgment during stressful situations. Research has shown that simulation is one method to improve clinical decision-making skills, increase confidence, and decrease anxiety. The purpose of this quality improvement project is to measure participants’ perceptions of their levels of self-confidence and anxiety related to clinical decision-making before and after a simulation session at George Washington University (GWU). Method: 21 third-semester Accelerated BSN students enrolled in the Adult-Geriatric Nursing 2 course were recruited for this study. Participants completed the Nursing …
Increasing Medication Administration Simulation To Improve Student Confidence And Performance Skill Level, Jessica Landry-Lyons
Increasing Medication Administration Simulation To Improve Student Confidence And Performance Skill Level, Jessica Landry-Lyons
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Objective: Medication errors continue to occur in healthcare settings across the globe impacting patient morbidity and mortality. With nurses being at the forefront of the medication administration process, it is crucial that thorough training and ability to correctly administer medications start early in nursing education. This includes ongoing education and effective utilization of technology and safeguards. Building confidence in medication administration skills is essential for their success in a demanding healthcare environment. If students are able to participate in more MA experiences through simulation, will they feel more confident with the skill? The purpose of this study investigated the potential …

Preliminary Analysis Of Native Bee Community Adjacent To Sorghum And Wheat Fields In Western Kansas, Katelyn Strack, Sarah Elzay
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Agricultural practices have significant and often negative effects on native bee populations. It is imperative that we understand how current agricultural practices affect native bees. Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) is cultivated heavily in western Kansas and is grown in rotation with winter wheat. This analysis presents preliminary results from a study conducted in summer 2023 in which pan traps were placed adjacent to two sorghum and two wheat fields in Ellis Co. Kansas. This data is part of a larger study examining the relationship between native bees and sorghum in western Kansas.

Education For Sustainable Development Competencies In A Community-Engaged Art Workshop, Amy J. Schmierbach
Education For Sustainable Development Competencies In A Community-Engaged Art Workshop, Amy J. Schmierbach
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Arts participation can expand empathy and cognitive growth capacity while creating a social bond and communal meaning (McCarthy et al., 2004). As an art instructor for over twenty years, I have witnessed the bonds that can be created through collaborative art experiences. These bonds are nurtured from a space of equity and inclusion. Teaching a community-engaged art course can bring these qualities into the community, allowing university students to use their art skills in real-world applications to impact society through experiential learning art practices. Making art with others will enable us to help others build empathy and social bonds that …
Juvenile Waiver: Problems And Soultions, Daniel Bechle, April Terry
Juvenile Waiver: Problems And Soultions, Daniel Bechle, April Terry
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
The juvenile waiver was established in 1966 with the landmark case Kent v. United States. This case deemed it constitutional to transfer youth from the juvenile court to the adult criminal court, and significant repercussions have since ensued. One issue includes the notable 3.5% increase in the recidivism rates for youth subjected to the waiver (Augustn, 2017a). The purpose of these waivers was to impose harsher punishments, particularly for serious offenses like murder, and this "tough on crime" approach gained momentum in the 1990s. Presently, public sentiment supports such measures, as evidenced by a survey indicating a majority favoring stricter …

Healing A Generation; Implementation Of Higher Education Curricula For Venezuelan Journalism Students Living Under Structural Violence To Promote A Transition Into Democracy, José Luis Jiménez-Figarotti Prof.
The SUNY Journal of the Scholarship of Engagement: JoSE
Venezuela's sociopolitical landscape has deteriorated significantly over the past decade, culminating in a profound humanitarian crisis. This ethnography, conducted from 2015 to the present, explores the experiences of a study group comprising 2000 Venezuelan communication college students, aged 17 to 25, who navigate structural violence while striving for quality higher education. The research employed a multifaceted approach, encompassing interviews, focus groups, and observations. Additionally, this qualitative study examines the outcomes of implementing an interdisciplinary journalism curriculum grounded in human rights and media activism, complemented by online sessions and an environmental education component. This educational project aims to foster critical thinking …

A Qualitative Case Study Of An Ultra-Brief Trait Emotional Intelligence Intervention For University Student Leaders, Britne K. Bacca-Haupt, Melinda R. Dilley, Fletcher J. Ferguson, Lisa C. Gillis-Davis, Jacqueline M. Schneller
Dissertations
Emotional intelligence gained interest in the early 1990s from researchers in hopes of assessing how understanding and developing emotions can help individuals be “healthy, rich, successful, loved, and happy” (Mayer et al., 2001, p. xi). Because of the expanded interest, increasing implications began occurring at the postsecondary level of education (Petrides et al., 2018). Trait emotional intelligence focuses on perceptions of oneself and others, illustrating how we regulate our emotions and recognize them in others. This qualitative study aimed to explore the impact of an ultra-brief intervention on the trait emotional intelligence development of university student leaders and how they …
The Impact Of State Laws On Officer-Involved Deaths (Oids), Morgan J. Steele, Ziwei Qi
The Impact Of State Laws On Officer-Involved Deaths (Oids), Morgan J. Steele, Ziwei Qi
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
While the public debates whether law enforcement has a problem with mis- or over-using force, the field lacks critical information concerning how often officers use force in their dealings with citizens. Consequently, the various reforms proposed have little evidence supporting them. Using data from Mapping Police Violence combined with census and LEOKA data, we examine the impact of U.S. Supreme Court jurisprudence and the restrictions that each state placed on law enforcement’s ability to use force and what constituted reasonable force within each state. We found that while the state’s population size and violent crime rate were consistently strong predictors …
Chippin’ In: An Analysis Of The Criminological Concepts Within Cyberpunk 2077, Morgan J. Steele
Chippin’ In: An Analysis Of The Criminological Concepts Within Cyberpunk 2077, Morgan J. Steele
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
The cyberpunk genre dominates much of our popular culture, from how we think of cyber- and white-collar crime, to our understanding of how technology influences the criminal justice system. This article explores the common criminological themes prevalent within the recent video game Cyberpunk 2077 as an example of popular criminology. Specifically, it explores the game’s story and environment by examining key characters’ responses to structural inequalities through an anomie theory lens. Key characters and groups within the game exemplify Merton’s (1938) different responses to rampant poverty and socioeconomic inequality. Thus, the game can be used to explore how cultural goals …

Evidence-Based Programs For System-Involved Youths, Karli Baalmann, April Terry
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Far too many juveniles are incarcerated in juvenile correctional facilities, and in some cases, waived into the adult criminal legal system. Life course theory helps explain this pathway as many of these youth grow up in poverty-stricken environments, with restricted access and poor quality of schooling, during which they may experience abuse and neglect, leading them into the school-to-prison pipeline. Likewise, youth experiencing Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)—forms of abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction—endure the additional abuse-to-prison pipeline. Once incarcerated, these youth experience reentry issues when attempting to successfully transition back into their homes and communities. However, this issue starts before …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This phenomenological study explores the experiences of Black, first-generation (first-gen) students pursuing advanced degrees at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), following the COVID-19 pandemic and racial justice movements like Black Lives Matter. Additionally, this study examines the present-day motivations to pursue advanced degrees, particularly the benefits of doing so at an HBCU. The main research question guiding this study is: What are the experiences of Black, first-gen graduate and professional students at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs)? The sub-questions are:
- How do Black, first-gen graduate and professional students describe being a first-gen student?
- What barriers and supports impact …
