Hira Gene Mutation In Arabidopsis Via Crispr, Kelly Chen, Claire Shippy, Tara Phelps-Durr Apr 2024

Hira Gene Mutation In Arabidopsis Via Crispr, Kelly Chen, Claire Shippy, Tara Phelps-Durr

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

The purpose of this study is to mutate the Histone Repressor A (HIRA) gene in a mustard plant (Arabidopsis) using CRISPR technology. HIRA is a chromatin-remodeling protein that is required for proper development in both plants and animals. Creating new changes (mutations) in HIRA will help us better understand the mechanism of how HIRA regulates transcription, which is important for understanding developmental disorders in animals, as well as how improper development leads to a reduction in crop yields in plants

Narrative Research: You Did What With Technology? Exploring Student Narratives Of Technology At A Research-Based University In The Southwest, Alma M. Sanchez

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

This qualitative study examined the impact of high school instructional technology on college students' academic strategies. It examined the historical and modern advancements of technology in education, uncovering significant milestones in technology integration within classrooms in the United States. Using a narrative inquiry approach grounded in John Dewey's philosophy of experience, it centered on the narratives of students in their second and third semesters of college. The study highlighted the gap in understanding students’ personal experiences with technology and emphasized the role their narratives play in shaping future technology integration strategies.

The methodology involved utilizing digital surveys and online semi-structured …

The Impact Of Covid-19 On Online Teaching And Faculty Preparedness: A Case Study Of Planning And Implementing Online Learning At An R2 Public Research University, Michele Renee Haynes

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this single-site case study was to understand four distinct online learning aspects impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in a mid-sized, urban, four-year institution in the Southern United States: (1) the faculty experience with converting courses and teaching online, (2) the university-provided instructional supports available to faculty throughout the pandemic, (3) the online learning design utilized throughout the pandemic, and (4) the university's preparedness and response to the pandemic. Through an analysis of participant interviews, document analysis, and secondary analysis of an internal COVID-19 faculty and staff survey, the study findings illustrated five distinct areas that influenced teaching …

Investigating The Molecular Function Of Mutated Arabidopsis As2 Gene, Tara Phelps-Durr, Cadee A. Haugsness Apr 2024

Investigating The Molecular Function Of Mutated Arabidopsis As2 Gene, Tara Phelps-Durr, Cadee A. Haugsness

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

This study aims to more deeply understand the role of the ASYMMETRIC LEAVES 2 (AS2) gene in Arabidopsis. During leaf development, the AS2 protein keeps the KNOX genes turned off so that leaves can develop. We use CRISPR technology to create mutations in specific regions of AS2. These mutations are predicted to change the protein structure of AS2, which may result in a mutated leaf. The analysis of the mutation allows us to better understand how AS2 keeps the KNOX genes off.

Teaching College In The High School: Unique Features And Challenges Of Site-Based Dual Enrollment, Paul Williams

Inquiry: The Journal of the Virginia Community Colleges

After a sharp decline associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, 2023 marked two consecutive years of increase in the number of freshman and high-school dual enrollees, with under-18-year-olds driving a disproportionate share of this growth. The rising importance of this latter student group presents new opportunities for colleges as well as underappreciated challenges rooted precisely in the high-school locale of concurrent Dual Enrollment courses. While some known stumbling blocks to effective college-level instruction for high school students are inherent in the age and lower maturity levels of the dominant age cohort, others stem from matters beyond the control of students and …
