Learning Outcomes, Benefits, And Challenges Of International Research Experiences For Students (Ires): An Exploratory Study Of An Ires Program In China, Yousef Jalali, James Barilla, Kirsten Davis, Vinod Lohani, Rolf Müller

Journal of International Engineering Education

Despite the increasing number of international programs targeting students’ learning of research and intercultural skills, there has been limited holistic investigation of students’ experiences employing both qualitative and quantitative methods. In this study, we incorporated several measures to explore students’ experiences in an International Research Experiences for Students (IRES) program, which benefited from the existing partnership between Virginia Tech in the U.S. and Shandong University in China. We examined students’ intercultural competence and interdisciplinary research skills and explored students’ stories of their lived experiences across three cohorts, each with five students, who completed the IRES program. Both open-ended survey responses …

Global Horizons: Assessing The Impact Of Study Abroad Programs On Intercultural Competence Development Pre-College Technology Students, Aparajita Jaiswal, Muna Sapkota

Journal of International Engineering Education

Across fields, college and university graduates are increasingly expected to perform effectively in diverse, multi-cultural work environments. Given this reality, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are actively designing strategies to help students develop intercultural skills. Prior research has revealed that deliberately structured study abroad programs are an effective approach to nurturing intercultural competence among graduates. Consciously designed study abroad programs can provide students with opportunities to learn and reflect on their experiences. In this study, we aim to understand the impact of a study abroad program on pre-freshmen students enrolled in a College of Technology. Using a mixed-methods design, we examined …

A Phenomenological Study Examining Lived Experiences Of Persistent Non-Traditional Students With Learning Disabilities At Community College, Mary Elizabeth Regis

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to understand the lived experiences of persistent non-traditional community college students with learning disabilities at community colleges in the Midwest United States. For this study, persistent, non-traditional community college students are defined as students who completed their first year of college, were currently enrolled in their second year of college or earned more than 30 credits, and were 25 or older, with commitments in addition to their academics, College students with learning disabilities were defined as students who had a documented learning disability rather than self-identified diagnoses. A Phenomenological Study Of Persistence For Black Women In Mathematics Doctoral Programs, Shushannah Marie Smith Oct 2024

A Phenomenological Study Of Persistence For Black Women In Mathematics Doctoral Programs, Shushannah Marie Smith

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the doctoral persistence experiences of Black women mathematicians. Guided by McGee’s fragile and robust mathematical identity framework, the research design followed Moustakas’ qualitative transcendental phenomenological approach. The researcher explored the contributing factors to the phenomenon guided by the central research question, “What are the doctoral persistence experiences of Black women mathematicians?” The study involved 11 Black women participants who hold or were within one year of holding a doctoral degree in mathematics and were selected to ensure diversity and representativeness. Data collection encompassed three methods: a mathematical identity development timeline, one-on-one …

The Perceived Effects Of Black Students' Involvement With Microcommunities On Academic Success At Predominantly White Institutions, Darryl D. Wright-Greene

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological study explored the perceived influence that micro-communities and support networks have on the academic success of Black students at Predominantly White Institutions across the United States. This study explored how the roles of micro-communities or strong support networks influence the academic success of Black students at Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs). Through the Social Capital Theory lens, the researcher assessed the lived experiences of current or former Black students to understand how involvement with support networks impacted their academic achievement or success, which included factors contributing to network structure, resources, support and the relationship …

Communicating Uncertainty And Cataloging Bias In Spatial Data Science Education, Peter Kedron, Jiahua Chen Oct 2024

Communicating Uncertainty And Cataloging Bias In Spatial Data Science Education, Peter Kedron, Jiahua Chen

I-GUIDE Forum

Uncertainty is an unavoidable part of any spatial analysis, which makes quantifying and communicating uncertainty a requirement of any spatial data science study. However, current curricula leave students understanding the importance of uncertainty and concerned about potential bias, but without an actionable framework to improve their workflows or inferences. We propose a framework rooted in Bloom’s Taxonomy for introducing these concepts to spatial data science students.

Persistence Of 1st-Year African American Male Students At A Community College In A Southeastern State, Mark Coleman

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The problem investigated in this study was the lack of persistence of 1st-year African American male students at a community college in a southeastern state. In the fall of 2018, only 55% of African American male students progressed through their 1st year compared to 70% of White male students. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of 1st-year African American male students that contribute to their decisions to persist at a community college in a southeastern state. The conceptual framework for this study was Tinto’s theory of student departure, which addresses how students are integrated into …
