Artivism For Access: Disrupting The Educational Status Quo, Mercedes Albarran, Rocio Zamora
Artivism For Access: Disrupting The Educational Status Quo, Mercedes Albarran, Rocio Zamora
Journal of College Access
This piece explores the transformative role of art as a platform for historically marginalized populations to challenge educational inequities and catalyze social change. Through the concept of "artivism," art and activism merge to humanize complex social issues, fostering understanding and solidarity. Highlighting historical moments such as the Chicano/a movement and contemporary contributions from students at Hoover High School, the text underscores how creative expression empowers individuals to disrupt the educational status quo. It examines the rich tapestry of student-led artivism that elevates voices from diverse backgrounds, notably BIPOC and first-generation students, in their pursuit of education and societal change. Environmental Justice And Ecology In Social Work Education: Emerging Trends Among Faculty., Keri Otte
Doctor of Social Work Capstone Projects
March 31, 2025
This paper presents a study of how social work educators in the U.S. are integrating environmental justice and ecological content into social work coursework and /or curriculum. Current literature in this area suggests that educators should be incorporating deep ecology philosophy, using experiential learning techniques, and moving away from anthropocentrism towards ecocentrism. Ten semi-structured interviews were conducted to gather data on pedagogical approaches, educator knowledge and previous training, and barriers to content integration. The interviews took place virtually with social work educators from five geographical areas in the United States. The findings illustrate the importance of transformative …

How Should Universities Serve The 100-Year Life Span?, Lily Kong, Hamish Coates
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Based on the 2024 lectures delivered by SMU President Professor Lily Kong as part of the 15th Singapore Institute for Policy Studies-Nathan Lecture Series titled ‘Universities Reinvented: Shaping Legacy and Impact for a New World’, the article highlights the need for universities to find a foothold in the next 100 years by moving beyond issuing credentialing to offering lifelong enabling experiences. It advocates for a shift towards holistic education that emphasises independence, humanities, interdisciplinary depth, and policy innovation. Additionally, it calls for government policy reform, stakeholder engagement, and a clear break from the global rankings race to ensure universities stay …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study is to understand the personal and professional journeys of African American professors through consideration of the self-perceived challenges and opportunities encountered while employed at predominantly White southern universities. The theory guiding this study is critical race theory (CRT), which provides a framework for analyzing the racial dynamics in academic institutions. The Differences In Perceived Stress And Coping For Prelicensure Nursing Students After A Positive Reappraisal Coping Intervention, Deanna Lynne Walborn
The Differences In Perceived Stress And Coping For Prelicensure Nursing Students After A Positive Reappraisal Coping Intervention, Deanna Lynne Walborn
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Academic stress has become a common problem among nursing students, which can lead to undesirable student outcomes if their stress goes unabated. The purpose of this quasi-experimental pretest/posttest study is to determine if an intervention using a positive reappraisal coping intervention (PRCI) can reduce student nurse stress. Knowles’ theory of adult learning along with Lazarus and Folkman’s transactional model of stress and coping (TMSC) provided a foundation for the study. Olejnik’s (1984) table was used to determine the minimal total sample size required for this research. A sample of 26 nursing students from those who are enrolled in a public …
