Etsu Today - Summer 2020, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU Today [magazine]

At East Tennessee State University, we are accustomed to dealing with hardship. It has been a defining part of our past. When tested by economic crises, wars, and threats to our very existence, our leaders, our faculty and staff, our students, our alumni, and our neighbors have met the challenge. ETSU not only survived, but it prevailed and prospered. It will continue to do so. From the very earliest days, our leaders faced uncertainty. Only eight days after the beginning of classes at East Tennessee State Normal School, our founding President, Sidney Gilbreath, was troubled. Faculty had already been on …

Burnout In College Resident Assistants: Indicators Of Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization, And Personal Accomplishment, Dustin Robert Dubose Jul 2020

Burnout In College Resident Assistants: Indicators Of Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization, And Personal Accomplishment, Dustin Robert Dubose

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Resident assistants (RAs) are vital members of the student affairs divisions of colleges and universities across the United States. As peer leaders, they are responsible for performing many duties; they must, for example, complete administrative tasks, counsel students, mediate conflict, serve as role models, assimilate students, facilitate groups, and much more. Furthermore, RAs are expected to be available for their students at all times of the day and night, responding to any situation when needed. These responsibilities come on top of their own work and academic responsibilities as college students. These varied roles and responsibilities, along with the 24-hour nature …

Visualizing Interdisciplinary Collaborations Within Exercise Science: A Pilot Study, Elizabeth Bjornsen Jul 2020

Visualizing Interdisciplinary Collaborations Within Exercise Science: A Pilot Study, Elizabeth Bjornsen

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Exercise science is a growing field with sub-disciplines exploring various aspects of physical activity. Diverse perspectives allow the field to answer complex research questions, but little is known about the collaborative nature of exercise science today. Research practices have implications on undergraduate curriculum, likely incorporating experiential knowledge into course subject matter and providing diverse experiences for students entering the workforce. Therefore, the purpose of the pilot study is to visualize and quantify interdisciplinary collaborations within exercise science. Journal citation analysis and an adaptation of social networking theory were utilized to examine collaborative practices of exercise science faculty at the University …

The Emotional Toil Of Paying For College: Lower Socioeconomic Status White Women’S College Experiences, 1880-1920, Heidi A. Jaeckle Jul 2020

The Emotional Toil Of Paying For College: Lower Socioeconomic Status White Women’S College Experiences, 1880-1920, Heidi A. Jaeckle

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Typically historical inquiries in higher education have been centered on privileged individuals from wealthier backgrounds who had the opportunity of attending primarily prestigious institutions. The experiences of college women from lower to middle class socioeconomic backgrounds have been for the most part ignored. This dissertation explores how socioeconomic backgrounds shaped the experiences of college women from the late nineteenth century to the early twentieth century, focusing on lower class students. With no universal financial aid program, the majority of these women were from families who could afford to pay tuition. Women from lower socioeconomic backgrounds did attend college, but their …

ETSU News

JOHNSON CITY (June 24, 2020) – How are mosses and humans alike and how can moss, plants often trampled underfoot, help humans survive and thrive? Dr. Aruna Kilaru of the East Tennessee State University Department of Biological Sciences can tell you, although some of the terms might require an encyclopedia.

Kilaru, who has five students in her group, leads two research projects at ETSU, one of which has been studying bryophyte mosses that she says date back about 500 million years and are highly resilient to environmental stressors. A doctoral student of Kilaru’s, Imdadul Haq, led the research, and his …
