Conversations About Food Insecurity: Examining College Campus Climates, Crystal Eufemia Garcia
Conversations About Food Insecurity: Examining College Campus Climates, Crystal Eufemia Garcia
Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications
This qualitative critical narrative inquiry study explored the experiences of 19 students within four universities in a single Southern state that used campus food aid resources such as a food pantry. Using Hurtado et al.’s Multicontextual Model for Diverse Learning Environments (MMDLE), this paper sheds light on how participants discussed the campus climate for students experiencing food insecurity within their respective campuses. Findings unpack students’ reflections on a lack of awareness and discussion about food insecurity and food aid resources within the campus community, the role that stigmas played in participants’ perceptions and use of campus food aid resources, and …

The Persistence Of Exclusion In Developmental Math Courses In Community Colleges: The Search For Equity And Justice In Math Education, Dora P. Trujillo
The Persistence Of Exclusion In Developmental Math Courses In Community Colleges: The Search For Equity And Justice In Math Education, Dora P. Trujillo
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This study examines how minoritized community college students taking developmental mathematics courses construct their math identities and how structures within academia affect this construction. It uses interviews and a focus group with open-ended questions to look beyond the quantitative studies examining the effectiveness of math developmental courses by exploring student narratives rather than statistical data. Both curricula and pedagogies need to be de-constructed so we may bring social change through diversity to the teaching and learning of mathematics at this level, as developmental math courses have become a systematized form of marginalization. In the process of de-constructing, we also need …

Developing Intercultural Competency In A Public Health Study Abroad Program: What Does Cultural Learning Mean For Undergraduate Chinese Students?, Sara Bano, Qing Xia, John Dirkx
Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
In this study, we explored the notions of cultural learning from non-western perspectives by focusing on the experiences of Chinese undergraduate students from the field of Public Health in the United States of America. We used Weick’s (1995) Sensemaking theory to understand how Chinese undergraduate students made sense of their experiences of learning about other cultures in both personal and professional spaces. We applied a qualitative research design and used interviews, a focus group, and reflection papers for data collection. We found that Chinese undergraduate students focused on social behaviors and attitudes. They used comparison as a tool to make …

The Impact Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On International Students In A Public University In The United States: Academic And Non-Academic Challenges, Nara M. Martirosyana, Dana Van De Walker, D. Patrick Saxon
Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
The COVID-19 pandemic has substantially impacted higher education. The unexpected move to online learning and support services has created many challenges. International students, who often are unfamiliar with the culture and norms of American higher education, have been particularly disadvantaged. Analyzing data received through an online survey, researchers identified the top five academic and non- academic challenges faced by international students during the pandemic, and their use of support services to overcome these challenges. The results inform college administrators, professors, and student services professionals on the experiences of international students during the pandemic and offer suggestions for reviving and expanding …

The Influence Of A Learning Management System (Lms) And Microblogging On Social Presence, Sense Of Community, And User Interface Satisfaction In A Distance Education Course, Andrew G. Leach
Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs
The impact of social media on everyday life is undeniable. Social media has transcended its initial purpose of connectivity and branched into other sociocultural aspects. Educators must create a rich and active learning environment where students can actively engage with their educational curriculum. This study used a mixed methods approach to investigate the influence that learning management systems (LMS) and microblogging (social media) have on key elements of distance education design. These elements include social presence, sense of community, and overall user interface design. Students’ perceptions of these elements were collected from students enrolled in a graduate course during summer …

Successful Treatment Of Radiation-Induced Colitis And Enteritis With Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, Mark D. Ringle, Jeffrey S. Cooper
Successful Treatment Of Radiation-Induced Colitis And Enteritis With Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, Mark D. Ringle, Jeffrey S. Cooper
Graduate Medical Education Research Journal
Introduction
Previously irradiated tissue is characterized by changes including decreased vascularity, impaired cellular proliferation, and local hypoxia consistent with fibroblastic atrophy which can persist long after radiation therapy. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of complications arising from these late effects of radiation on normal tissue through enhancing fibroblast proliferation, collagen maturation, stem cell recruitment, and angiogenesis.
Methods
We report on three patients with debilitating radiation enterocolitis causing issues including recurrent bowel obstruction, anorexia requiring total parenteral nutrition, pain, diarrhea, fecal incontinence, dehydration, and malnutrition.
Results
In all three cases marked improvement was the …

In this case study, the authors describe a virtual event designed to enrich a campus common read with historical cookbooks. The program included an overview of the collection and a real-time activity to engage participants in virtually examining rare and unique Chinese cookbooks. A set of guiding questions emphasized primary source literacies including analyses of physical characteristics, contexts, content, and further research that can be conducted by consulting the collection. The virtual modality proved to be both a challenge and an opportunity, but the overall structure of the event - identifying a collection that relates to a larger campus initiative, …

ETSU News
JOHNSON CITY – The start of a new school year can be a stressful yet exciting time for students and parents alike. ETSU Health Pediatrics recommends scheduling an annual checkup to ensure children’s health and well-being prior to their return to class in August.
Children who see their pediatrician annually can create healthy habits that carry into their adulthood. A pediatrician will examine their overall health and can get them up to date on all CDC-recommended vaccines for school-aged children.
Placing an emphasis on children’s mental health is vital to the start of a happy, healthy and successful school year. …
