Libraries Professional Work
ETDs in repositories are nothing new, but what do you do when starting from zero, and your institution has not actively collected or archived student ETDs?
This was the scenario at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Being a relatively new institution growing out of several smaller local colleges, the codification of administrative workflows as related to ETDs took the long trail.
This talk will discuss our approach to discovering our own uncollected content, engaging ProQuest as an unexpected partner, and going from zero to fairly complete in about a year.

Exploring Variations In Stem Instructors’ Approaches To Office Hours, Desiree Forsythe, Rebecca M. Green, Jeremy L. Hsu
Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
Office hours are an integral component of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) courses at nearly all colleges and universities. Despite their ubiquity as a support mechanism, there has only been limited work examining how instructors approach office hours and what shapes these approaches. Here, we conduct a phenomenographic study to investigate how instructors of STEM courses experience office hours and how these experiences may impact their approaches to promoting and managing office hours. We identified variations in how instructors promoted office hours, the modality of office hours (i.e., when and where office hours were held), and how instructors facilitated …

Tqr16: What It Is And What It Can Be, James A. Bernauer
The Qualitative Report
This article was written in response to the Call for the TQR16 Conference in 2025. I was compelled to write this article because of the poignancy of the theme. The questions posed were first whether we care whether our work makes an impact outside of academia and second whether this work would have a greater impact if we involved participants as true co-researchers from the very beginning of our inquiries. I explored these two questions by sharing my thoughts about the citations, the qualitative/quantitative divide, our natural need to discover, barriers to achieving the satisfactory answers to the two questions, …

Research has indicated that food accessibility and cultural food preference play a crucial role in creating a sense of belonging for international students in higher education. The recent Sodexo survey (2019) indicated 83% of international students feel that accessibility to cultural food was an important factor, and 61% indicated that not having access to food that is familiar makes them feel less connected to the community. This paper examines specific food barriers that international students experience at DePauw University and how such issues influence community integration and a general sense of belonging. It synthesizes earlier research with campus-specific data to …

Sources Of Information That Introduced Undergraduate Students To Their Allied Health Major, Erin Vanderbunt
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Selecting a college major can be overwhelming for undergraduate students. The factors influencing major selection not only impact student success and degree completion time but also affect university recruitment and retention strategies. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify the most influential sources of information that first introduced undergraduate students to their current major of nutrition, public health, or speech pathology and sought to determine if any differences existed between the academic majors or by the demographic variables of gender or racial/ethnic backgrounds. Methods: A total of 121 undergraduate students from a regional, midwest institution participated in …

Recent Graduates’ Perceptions Of Immersion And Its Effect On Preparation For Professional Practice, Dana Karlene Bates, Jessica L. Moore
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: The Standards for Accreditation of Professional Athletic Training Programs now requires students to complete an immersive clinical educational experience. There is limited research in athletic training education on recent graduates’ perceptions of the impact of these immersive experiences. The purpose of our study was to explore recent graduates of a masters’ athletic training program perceptions of an immersive experience as it relates to preparation for professional practice. Method: A qualitative inquiry was utilized for this study to explore athletic trainers’ perceptions following an immersive clinical experience. Ten recent graduates (1 male, 9 female) who completed a 10-week …

Incorporating Transparency Into An Online Respiratory Care Curriculum, Kristen Mchenry, Adrian Hoyal
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: The Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TILT) framework has been shown to impact student academic success, improve retention rates, and increase reported course satisfaction. This instructional strategy has demonstrated effectiveness in traditional, online, and underrepresented student groups. This project aimed to revise one elective 7-week course in an online undergraduate degree advancement (DA) program in Respiratory Care to incorporate the TILT infrastructure and assess retention and satisfaction pre and post-implementation. Methods: The methodology can be characterized as evaluative, non-experimental research. An objectives-oriented approach was used to retrospectively evaluate the pedagogical change (TILT) and its degree of instructional impact on …

Using Bloom's Taxonomy To Visualize Antiracist Teaching Strategies., Lucian Rothe, Cara K. Snyder
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
2020 marked a surge in the uprisings for racial and social justice in the United States and around the globe. Universities met the moment with aspirations to become antiracist institutions. However, there has often been a disconnect between universities’ antiracist goals and support for educators in their day-to-day instruction. Moreover, many educators – primarily those racialized as White, who have seldom had to consider their racial identity in predominantly White environments – are unfamiliar with antiracist teaching strategies. This essay is for university instructors who are new to antiracist pedagogy but want to use its principles to transform their teaching. …

Objective: The purpose of this scoping review is to provide nurse educators and nurse leaders in practice with the findings on the state of the science surrounding undergraduate nursing education simulation-based experiences focused on end-of-life (EOL) care in rural settings. This scoping review aims to identify undergraduate nursing student experiences with EOL care in the rural setting and identify key simulation-based educational strategies utilized in undergraduate nursing programs to inform educational programs about simulation practices. The outcome of this review is intended to advance nursing education to better prepare future nurses for practice and to develop competence in providing EOL …

Increased Risks Of Maternal Mental Health Conditions Following Covid-19 Pandemic, Anita Zhou, Allison Zetterman, Megan Ott, Colman Freel, Kayla Adams, Charmayne R. Adams
Office of Health Promotion Scholarship
Background: Women are at an increased risk of developing psychiatric conditions such as anxiety and depression during pregnancy. Psychiatric conditions during pregnancy can put mothers and fetuses at risk of worse physical and mental health before, during, and after the completion of a pregnancy. Previous research indicates that women pregnant during COVID-19 were at a greater risk of developing mental health conditions and being exposed to stressors. While most of the research in the field focuses solely on maternal mental health or interactions between stressors and maternal mental health, little research has been done comparing maternal mental health, demographic variables, …
