A Phenomenological Study Of Persistence For Black Women In Mathematics Doctoral Programs, Shushannah Marie Smith
A Phenomenological Study Of Persistence For Black Women In Mathematics Doctoral Programs, Shushannah Marie Smith
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the doctoral persistence experiences of Black women mathematicians. Guided by McGee’s fragile and robust mathematical identity framework, the research design followed Moustakas’ qualitative transcendental phenomenological approach. The researcher explored the contributing factors to the phenomenon guided by the central research question, “What are the doctoral persistence experiences of Black women mathematicians?” The study involved 11 Black women participants who hold or were within one year of holding a doctoral degree in mathematics and were selected to ensure diversity and representativeness. Data collection encompassed three methods: a mathematical identity development timeline, one-on-one …
Communicating Uncertainty And Cataloging Bias In Spatial Data Science Education, Peter Kedron, Jiahua Chen
Communicating Uncertainty And Cataloging Bias In Spatial Data Science Education, Peter Kedron, Jiahua Chen
I-GUIDE Forum
Uncertainty is an unavoidable part of any spatial analysis, which makes quantifying and communicating uncertainty a requirement of any spatial data science study. However, current curricula leave students understanding the importance of uncertainty and concerned about potential bias, but without an actionable framework to improve their workflows or inferences. We propose a framework rooted in Bloom’s Taxonomy for introducing these concepts to spatial data science students.

Ethical Leadership Case Collection: Fast Fashion Shopping, Hristian Dsouza Michaeli, Ming Thet Paing, San San Maw
GHEA21 Open Educational Resources
The Ethical Leadership Case Collection is the product of the Network Collaborative Course entitled Ethical Leadership. The course explores approaches to ethical leadership not just in the abstract, but as a discipline that is focused on action. The course is grounded in students’ perspectives on the ethical and leadership challenges they face in their own lives and communities. As an approach to thinking through ethical leadership, the course is structured around the concerns explored in Dr. Mary Gentile's Giving Voice to Values framework. Students created developed case studies of their own.

Exploring Zoom Fatigue Among International Students In U.S. Virtual Classes, Esther Son, Kristen Cvancara
Exploring Zoom Fatigue Among International Students In U.S. Virtual Classes, Esther Son, Kristen Cvancara
Communication Studies Department Publications
Online video conferencing platforms, such as Zoom, are widely used for virtual classes. Zoom platforms bring flexibility and convenience but also contribute to fatigue, which is called “Zoom fatigue.” The purpose of this study is to investigate Zoom fatigue among international students at U.S. universities and its links to virtual classroom communication in the field of education. The study investigated how English competency and course engagement affected Zoom fatigue in virtual classes experienced by 152 international students. The results showed that English competency and course engagement had a negative relationship with Zoom fatigue. The study implied that when international students …

Post-Pandemic Predictors Of Anxiety In College Students, Lisa J. Hayes, R. Brooke Bays, Piper Lashley, Nia Kherani, Alex Swanson
Post-Pandemic Predictors Of Anxiety In College Students, Lisa J. Hayes, R. Brooke Bays, Piper Lashley, Nia Kherani, Alex Swanson
Journal of Applied Disciplines
Rates of anxiety among college students have increased significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic and have remained high (Elharake et al., 2023), placing students at risk for diminished academic performance, depression, and academic burnout (Rassaby et al., 2022). The goal of this study was to examine possible predictors of anxiety in a diverse group of undergraduate students post-pandemic, with the goal of informing future preventive intervention efforts. Maladaptive perfectionism, passive procrastination, active procrastination, cognitive flexibility, and social well-being were assessed as potential predictors of state and trait anxiety in a sample of 297 currently enrolled college students. Results showed that perfectionism …

Participatory Community Action Research In Homeless Shelters: Withstanding The Pandemic And Flourishing Beyond It With New Interventions, Kathryn E. Hurley, Roger N. Reeb, Sarah M. Clark, Tia N. Turner, Greg Elvers
Research and Reflection on Learning and Teaching in Higher Education
This article tells the story of a long-term (12-year-old) and ongoing participatory community action research in homeless shelters – the Behavioral Activation Research Project in Homeless Shelters (the project), which represents a long-term collaboration between Roger N. Reeb, PhD (Professor of Psychology) and St. Vincent de Paul (Dayton, Ohio). The first section of this article provides a grand overall description of the project, summarizes past research, and explains how we sustained the project during the COVID-19 pandemic. To demonstrate the project’s ongoing nature, the second section reports an honors thesis completed within the context of the project, accompanied by a …

Diversifying Community Connections, Courtney Belt
Research and Reflection on Learning and Teaching in Higher Education
The focus of this reflective commentary is building authentic relationships with a wider variety of community partners toward greater collective impact and equity in community experiential learning. During my time as Clinical Coordinator in the University of Dayton undergraduate music therapy program, we have added 11 new practicum placement sites with one additional starting Spring 2024. The addition of several of these sites stemmed from music therapy faculty discussions about the desire to serve a greater diversity of clientele in our music therapy practicum courses and expand learning opportunities for music therapy students. In this paper, I describe our decision …

Sisterhood And Authenticity: The Experiences Of Generation Z Sorority Women In National Panhellenic Council (Npc) Chapters, Pietro A. Sasso, Kim E. Bullington, Melissa Bidinger
New York Journal of Student Affairs
Generation Z (Gen Z) has entered higher education and is not the traditional undergraduate student (18-24) and are the contemporary members of sororities. Gen Z is different from their Millennial predecessors and requires a reexamination to meet the needs of college students today. This qualitative study examined how National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) sorority members who are in Gen Z described their connectedness through sense of belonging and their own generation. We identified two themes: (1) the importance of authenticity and deep connections and (2) emerging Gen Z group identity. Recommendations for practice include more interpersonal recruitment efforts and leadership development …
