Utilising An Indigenous Qualitative Information Analysis Method: An Example Of The Application Of Thought Ritual, Meg M. Kelly, Kelly A. Marriott-Statham, Maria Mackay
Journal of the Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet
This paper aims to provide a worked application of Thought Ritual as an Indigenous data (information) analysis tool. Thought Ritual is unique in providing an Indigenous underpinning to Indigenous research and promotes the use of cultural methods to analyse collected information. This worked example explores the use of Thought Ritual and dissects the four stages of the analysis tool: (1) connection, (2) diversity, (3) interaction and (4) adaption. Thought Ritual can be difficult to apply due to ambiguity with the associated stages. Due to the recent development of Thought Ritual, there remained limited application of the tool. This worked example …

University Students Speak Out: Suggestions To Improve The Move To Emergency Remote Education, Pauline Howes, Justine E. Pettigrew
Faculty Articles
The 2020 COVID-19 crisis forced universities to make a dramatic shift to emergency remote education (ERE). While the urgency of the pandemic is gone, schools continue implementing ERE, but more often on a short-notice, short-term basis in response to various situations. This research examines students’ suggestions for improving university transitions to ERE and applies them to post-pandemic use of ERE. Qualitative thematic analysis was used to analyze responses to an open-ended survey question answered by 2,751 students at a large Southeastern U.S. university. Responses identified main concerns as Grades and Grading (38%), Better University and Instructor Preparation (23%), Improved Learning …

Teacher Candidates Develop And Apply Pedagogical Content Knowledge To Support Multilingual Learners, Kyongson Park, Danielle L. Defauw
Michigan Reading Journal
To ensure English Learners (ELs) / Multilingual Learners (MLs) have access to well-prepared educators, one regional university integrates a seven-credit block of courses to ensure teacher candidates learn and apply English as a Second Language methods within clinical experiences. Teacher candidates must create a technology-integrated Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) lesson plan by utilizing the following key strategies designed to support EL/MLs’ literacy development for academic purposes: adding both content and language objectives, building background knowledge through connecting students’ cultural experiences, and developing comprehensible input in different proficiency levels.

Coaching America's Youngest College Football Team: My Plan, Trent Figg
Coaching America's Youngest College Football Team: My Plan, Trent Figg
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
“From the start, I’ve made it clear that being a champion isn’t just about football. The time a young man spends playing college football is some of the most formative in a young man’s life, and I refuse to let that time be wasted focusing solely on the game. I’m committed to shaping their character and preparing them to win on the field and in their future roles as husbands, fathers, leaders, and men of faith.”

At-Risk Male Student Athletes’ Perceptions Of Support Efforts To Enhance Retention At A Faith-Based University, Drametrice Traronzoe Smith
At-Risk Male Student Athletes’ Perceptions Of Support Efforts To Enhance Retention At A Faith-Based University, Drametrice Traronzoe Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Student athletes often enter college unprepared for academic rigor, making them particularly vulnerable in terms of academic success. At a faith-based university in the southeast United States, low retention of student athletes results from poor class attendance, course failures, and low grade point averages. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore how at-risk college student athletes perceived the value of support efforts to enhance retention at this faith-based university. Guided by Tinto’s theory of student departure, this basic qualitative study involved a sample of 12 to 15 at-risk college student athletes from the university who participated in …

Global Horizons: Assessing The Impact Of Study Abroad Programs On Intercultural Competence Development Pre-College Technology Students, Aparajita Jaiswal, Muna Sapkota
Journal of International Engineering Education
Across fields, college and university graduates are increasingly expected to perform effectively in diverse, multi-cultural work environments. Given this reality, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are actively designing strategies to help students develop intercultural skills. Prior research has revealed that deliberately structured study abroad programs are an effective approach to nurturing intercultural competence among graduates. Consciously designed study abroad programs can provide students with opportunities to learn and reflect on their experiences. In this study, we aim to understand the impact of a study abroad program on pre-freshmen students enrolled in a College of Technology. Using a mixed-methods design, we examined …

The Perceived Effects Of Black Students' Involvement With Microcommunities On Academic Success At Predominantly White Institutions, Darryl D. Wright-Greene
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological study explored the perceived influence that micro-communities and support networks have on the academic success of Black students at Predominantly White Institutions across the United States. This study explored how the roles of micro-communities or strong support networks influence the academic success of Black students at Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs). Through the Social Capital Theory lens, the researcher assessed the lived experiences of current or former Black students to understand how involvement with support networks impacted their academic achievement or success, which included factors contributing to network structure, resources, support and the relationship …
