Coastal Erosion In Ireland, Brian Nguyen, Jeanne Sumrall
Coastal Erosion In Ireland, Brian Nguyen, Jeanne Sumrall
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Ireland's approach to managing its coastlines focuses more on a short-term solution method rather than long-term, eco-friendly solutions. Their coastal defenses are created upon an immediate need without clear policies and sufficient research. As a result, beach ecosystems are frequently damaged, and the erosion is only reduced to a certain extent. To reduce erosion and protect both the environment and Irish culture, this study suggests that Ireland should implement national policies focused on regularly monitoring coastal erosion, researching nature-based solutions, and implementing them to address the problem. Moving forward, it’s important for research to focus on understanding the overall impact …
Impacts Of Adverse Childhood Experiences And Proactive Coping On College Adjustment And Risky Behavior, Isabella Kester, Will Stutterheim, Jisook Park
Impacts Of Adverse Childhood Experiences And Proactive Coping On College Adjustment And Risky Behavior, Isabella Kester, Will Stutterheim, Jisook Park
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have garnered recent attention in psychological and educational research due to their significant and lasting effects on an individual’s ability to cope and adjust to the demands that are part of the college experience. The trauma experienced in childhood can influence key aspects of psychological and emotional development, shaping how adults conceptualize and cope with stressors later in life. These developmental disruptions also increase one’s susceptibility to risky behaviors, especially during transitional periods in life, such as entering college (Allem et al., 2015; Campbell et al., 2016). This study aims to explore the interplay between ACEs …
Positive Illusions And Their Mental Health Implications, Caleb L. Ashley
Positive Illusions And Their Mental Health Implications, Caleb L. Ashley
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Positive illusions, defined as overly optimistic self-evaluations, exaggerated perceptions of control, and unrealistically favorable outlooks on the future have been the subject of a breadth of research due to their implications in mental health and resilience. Empirical evidence suggests that, in moderate amounts, positive illusions can help support resilience and persistence and are correlated with overall well-being. However, their benefits may become detrimental if they are absent or excessively pronounced. By synthesizing existing research, this presentation seeks to provide a nuanced understanding of positive illusions and to offer insights into how their existence may inform treatment in clinical settings.
Employment Outcomes For Postsecondary Students With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities: A Secondary Analysis, Eric J. Anderson, Andrew Buck, Jessie Green, Diane Weinbrandt, Margo Izzo, Amy Shuman
Employment Outcomes For Postsecondary Students With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities: A Secondary Analysis, Eric J. Anderson, Andrew Buck, Jessie Green, Diane Weinbrandt, Margo Izzo, Amy Shuman
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Individuals with disabilities do not access postsecondary education at the same rate as their peers without disabilities. This gap is unfortunate, as research shows that when students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) participate in postsecondary education, they have improved physical, social, and employment outcomes. To address these issues, colleges and universities have created postsecondary programs for students with IDD. While research on employment outcomes of these programs has been positive, there are conflicting results when analyzing which aspects of those programs are associated with positive employment outcomes. In this study we analyze data from 92 students enrolled in nine …

The Distribution And Ecology Of Native Irish Tree Species, Yuchen Hu, Jeanne Sumrall
The Distribution And Ecology Of Native Irish Tree Species, Yuchen Hu, Jeanne Sumrall
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Ireland’s native woodlands have greatly declined due to deforestation, farming, and urbanization, with less than 1% of the land now covered by native forests. This study looks at the distribution of native trees like oak, ash, birch, and yew, and their role in biodiversity. Native woodlands are mainly in the western and northern parts of Ireland, while areas with more farming and development have lost most of their native forests.
The study also highlights threats from invasive species and diseases like ash dieback. Forest fragmentation reduces their ecological value and harms wildlife. While restoration efforts have made some progress, the …

Defining Sexual Assault, Consent, And Resources To Empower Students: A Dnp Project, Sarah Powers
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Abstract
Sexual assault (SA) remains a pervasive issue on college campuses in the United States, often compounded by underreporting and a lack of knowledge about available resources. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project aims to educate first-year college students about SA, sexual consent, and available resources to empower students in preventing assaults and seeking help when needed. The intervention, which was integrated into mandatory freshman seminars at a four-year university, was guided by Knowles' Adult Learning Theory. A presentation provided critical information, and knowledge gains were assessed through pre- and post-presentation surveys. Initial findings indicated significant increases in understanding …
Wrongful Convictions In The United States, Connor J. Schoenberger
Wrongful Convictions In The United States, Connor J. Schoenberger
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Wrongful convictions occur too frequently in the united states. A wrongful conviction occurs when a person is found guilty and sentenced for a crime that he or she did not commit. Wrongful convictions occur for a number of reasons including false confessions and prosecutorial misconduct, to name only two. This study considers how wrongful convictions affect society and consequences for those who are wrongfully convicted and then later exonerated. One cannot put a price tag on the harm done as a result of wrongful convictions.

An In-Depth Analysis Of The Bellarmine University Student Athlete Experience, Mattingly E. Spalding
Undergraduate Theses
The goal of this thesis is to improve the student athlete experience at Bellarmine University through direct feedback from our current student athletes. By defining what parts of the student athlete experience they value most, Bellarmine can reflect on the support currently provided in these areas. Additionally, if it is concluded through the response that high valued areas are not being satisfied, Bellarmine can work to improve the support in these areas. Or, if there is abundant support in a low-valued area, Bellarmine could think to shift resources into a more needed concentration. Through the design sample, data was accumulated …

Induced Mutagenesis In West Nile Virus Non-Structural Protein 3 With A Discussion Of The Mutation's Effects On Viral Properties, Caden Connealy
Induced Mutagenesis In West Nile Virus Non-Structural Protein 3 With A Discussion Of The Mutation's Effects On Viral Properties, Caden Connealy
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
West Nile Virus (WNV), a member of the Flaviviridae family and introduced to the Western hemisphere in 1999, presents a unique and emerging threat to human health. Infection in humans is often mild but can occasionally result in severe neurological impairment and even death. West Nile Virus non-structural protein 3 (NS3) plays an important role in the process of viral genome amplification. More specifically, the C-terminal domain of the protein folds into a helicase enzyme, which is responsible for the “unwinding” of double-stranded RNA intermediates and RNA secondary structure on the WNV genome. This is a vitally important step in …

Understanding The Role Of Academic Programs In Preparing Child Life Students For Internship – Perspectives Of Students And New Professionals, Camille Vereschagin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
Certified Child Life Specialists (CCLS) are healthcare professionals trained to support the psychosocial and emotional needs of children and their families through hospitalization and other stressful experiences. Becoming a CCLS requires the completion of coursework, a 600-hour clinical internship, and certification through the Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP). However, the transition from academic coursework to clinical internship can be challenging for students.
This qualitative study explores how child life academic programs prepare students for internship from the perspectives of students and new professionals. An exploratory-descriptive qualitative research design was used to examine the factors within academic programs that support …

The Effect Of Transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation On Word Memory In Healthy Adults, Haylee Hurt, Cassandra Callahan, Olivia Galpin, Qiang Li
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) is a non-invasive technique that has been demonstrated to reorganize the brain neural network based on neuroplasticity. Research shows that tVNS may enhance cognitive performance such as verbal memory, as it may elicit the release of key neurotransmitters, Gamma-aminobutyric Acid (GABA) and Noradrenaline, that modulate cognitive performance and learning. The current study hypothesizes that verbal memory as an important cognitive skill in healthy adults will be improved after receiving tVNS. Results showed that compared to the control group, participants in the experimental group improved their verbal memory manifested in faster reaction times and higher accuracy …

Background
The mental health of physicians is a pressing issue that has received increasing attention in recent years. The alarmingly high suicide rates for physicians underscores the critical need to address the mental health challenges that doctors face. Physicians are exposed to stressors that are unique to their profession, including high-stakes decision making, long work hours, traumatic patient situations, and the emotional toll of patient care. These challenges contribute to high rates of anxiety, depression, burnout, and other mental health issues. However, despite these factors, physicians are often reluctant to seek mental health treatment due to fears of professional repercussions, …

Descriptive Analysis Of Student Diagnostic And Documentation Skill Development In A Low Fidelity Simulation In Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Education, Nicholas Guenzel, Daisy Dai
Interprofessional Academy of Educators Spotlight on Scholarship
Introduction: Nursing educators face challenges in helping registered nurses prepare to be psychiatric nurse practitioners. Nursing educators must consider the variation of students’ skill sets, experience levels, and the shortage of preceptors. Simulations can help overcome limited clinical sites and standardize skill acquisition. High-fidelity simulations can be helpful but are labor-intensive and expensive. Low-fidelity simulations are adaptable to fit the learning needs of psychiatric nurse practitioner students but little research has evaluated these simulations.
Objective: This paper evaluates a series of low-fidelity interventions used to help students learn diagnostic criteria, treatment decisions, and documentation.
Methods: A retrospective descriptive analysis was …

Physicians are valuable contributors to the biomedical research process with unique perspectives that enhance the translatability of research to patient care. The benefit of physicians in biomedical research is further realized in the expansion of team science, which has reshaped the landscape of translational research and elevated the ability of PhD scientists to work with human populations and samples. Despite these merits, recent studies have demonstrated falling levels of research engagement amongst physicians, which has significant implications for the future of biomedical discovery and evidence-based medicine. To address this issue, we developed the FORTIFY-Med initiative, a pilot project designed to …

Interprofessional Academy of Educators Spotlight on Scholarship
Introduction/Purpose: This study examines the preparedness, awareness, and empathy of senior dental hygiene students during an operating room simulation at UNMC’s iEXCEL. A lack of confidence and limited hands-on learning opportunities in the operating room rotation contribute to anxiety, restricting students’ ability to develop essential clinical competencies. To address this issue, a convergent mixed methods approach was used to evaluate the impact of simulation-based learning of a dental surgical case on students' readiness for real-world scenarios while fostering empathy for special needs patients requiring treatment under general anesthesia.
Methods: A total of 23 second-year dental hygiene students participated in pre- …
