Domain Communication In Bifunctional Proline Utilization A From Sinorhizobium Meliloti, Emma Bitterman
Domain Communication In Bifunctional Proline Utilization A From Sinorhizobium Meliloti, Emma Bitterman
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
The reduction potential of flavin bound to Sinorhizobium meliloti proline utilization A (SmPutA) is beneficial in providing vital information on enzyme activity and the active site environment. Flavin is crucial in biological metabolism such as aerobic respiration and other important processes like oxygen activation that are catalyzed by flavin-dependent enzymes. (4). In this study, we seek to determine whether the redox potential of SmPutA-bound flavin can be used to characterize potential long-distance communication and analyze the possibilities of inactivation reversibility. SmPutA is a large bifunctional enzyme that catalyzes the overall oxidation of proline to glutamate via two catalytic domains (1). …

Every Grain Of Sand: 2024 Changes To The Scope Of Higher Education Unionization, William A. Herbert, Joseph Van Der Naald, Jacob Apkarian
Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy
In this research note, we supplement the findings presented in the National Center’s 2024 Directory of Bargaining Agents and Contracts in Institutions of Higher Education. We aggregate and analyze data on changes in academic collective bargaining relationships for faculty, postdoctoral scholars, and graduate and undergraduate student employees in the year 2024. Our findings demonstrate that the growth in academic collective bargaining over the past decade that we documented in the 2024 Directory has continued. However, we find some significant contractions in faculty unionization through institutional closures and the revocation of bargaining units in the state of Florida. The research …
Graduate Student Labor Unions: Two Experienced Academic Administrators Share Their Views, Karen R. Stubaus
Graduate Student Labor Unions: Two Experienced Academic Administrators Share Their Views, Karen R. Stubaus
Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy
This interview of two experienced academic administrators traces the evolution of graduate worker concerns as expressed in their collective bargaining agreements over the course of 50 years, at the University of Michigan and Michigan State University. Initial emphases on standard terms and conditions of employment are supplemented over the course of time with attention to work/life balance, discrimination and harassment, and other social justice issues. Administrators provide insights and advice on how to establish productive and collegial working relationships with the growing phenomenon of graduate worker unions.

Navigating Harassment And Discrimination At University Of California Through Uaw 4811'S Abusive Conduct Contract Provisions, Sarah Arveson, Emily Weintraut
Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy
The Respectful Work Environment (RWE) provisions in the recent University of California labor agreements with graduate students and postdocs have proven useful in addressing harassment and discrimination in new and perhaps more effective ways than either previous contract provisions or university policies and procedures. The authors describe how the new RWE provisions work and provide several illustrative case studies.

"No Pay, No Ras": Resident Assistant Unionization Amidst University Backlash, Justin Weller
Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy
While resident assistant (RA) unions have existed in the United States for over 20 years, RA unionization has accelerated on college campuses in recent years. This article explores the institutional responses to RA unionization through a distributive justice framework. I argue unionization aligns with the distributive justice framework and union-busting strategies do not align. I provide practical recommendations for institutions to align their practices with the National Labor Relations Act and relevant jurisprudence. Implications include a need to study RAs’ experiences in unionization and a continued focus on the ongoing legal challenges that may impact future unionization.
The Limits Of Law: Lessons For Collective Bargaining, Eric J. Scarffe, Daniel Saunders
The Limits Of Law: Lessons For Collective Bargaining, Eric J. Scarffe, Daniel Saunders
Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy
This paper elucidates some features of law that generally go overlooked in collective bargaining. Using examples from collective bargaining agreements at universities in Florida, we unearth how assumptions about the nature of law (championed by the conservative legal movement) may undermine the ability for unions to influence the material working conditions at their universities. We believe negotiators need to reject these assumptions, and embrace an approach to ‘bargaining as pedagogy,’ which emphasizes the need for faculty and administrators alike to arrive at shared understandings of what the law means (be it the collective bargaining agreement, university policy, or state statute).
Faculty Views About Their Covid-19 Layoffs From A Public University In The Us Midwest, Susan E. Ramlo
Faculty Views About Their Covid-19 Layoffs From A Public University In The Us Midwest, Susan E. Ramlo
Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy
In July 2020, a public university in the US Midwest announced it would lay off 96 bargaining unit faculty based on a force majeure clause in the union contract. Most of the faculty held tenure and some were distinguished professors. The layoffs occurred with no faculty input and immediately following a major university reorganization. This study uses Q methodology [Q] to examine the Perceived Organizational Support [POS] of these laid off unionized faculty within an agency theory framework. Q allows us to reveal and describe the divergent views of the laid off faculty based upon analyses of their sorts of …
Juggling Coursework, Student Teaching, And Personal Lives: Bgsu Pre-Service Teachers’ Experiences And Pre-Conceptions On Teacher Burnout, Iris Faria
Honors Projects
Teacher burnout is a hot topic in today's media, as teachers' responsibilities expand and retention rates in the education field falter. While this is a desperate issue, the specific topic of this study is pre-service teachers' experiences of and ideas about the three dimensions of burnout. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), these dimensions are: "feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion; increased mental distance from one’s job or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one’s job; and reduced professional efficacy." Participants involved in this study completed a survey involving seven multiple-choice questions aligned with the dimensions of burnout …

Implementing Standardized Patients In Simulation In Undergraduate Nursing Education, Taylor A. Murray
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Abstract
The integration of standardized patients (SPs) in simulation-based learning has emerged as a transformative approach in undergraduate nursing education. By providing nursing students with the opportunity to engage with trained actors simulating real-life patient scenarios, SPs offer a safe and controlled environment to develop essential clinical skills. This research explores the impact of SPs on promoting student confidence and enhancing their practical skills in nursing practice. Implementing SPs into nursing education not only supports students in refining their assessment and communication abilities but also prepares them for the complexities of patient care in real-world settings. Ultimately, this study aims …

Sonographic Evaluation Of An Urachal Remnant: A Case Report, Courtney Gushi
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Urachal anomalies are rare and often identified incidentally during diagnostic imaging studies, such as sonography. These anomalies are being detected with increasing frequency due to advancements in cross-sectional medical imaging. Sonography is a key diagnostic modality due to its lack of radiation, cost-effectiveness, and widespread ability. Urachal anomalies have the potential to undergo pathological changes, leading to inflammation, infection, and even malignancy. Therefore, it is imperative for sonographers to be proficient in identifying and understanding sonographic characteristics of urachal abnormalities.

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the lived experience of students at Western Pennsylvania community colleges with creative writing extracurricular involvement and its impact on academic success and personal development. The theory guiding this study was Astin’s theory of student involvement, as it provided a framework for exploring involvement in creative writing extracurriculars within the community college. The central research question of the study was: What are the lived experiences of community college students actively involved in a creative writing extracurricular? Two sub-questions follow, dissecting the student's academic success and personal development. The research study design was …

Rethinking Systematic Review Assignment Design In Graduate Health Science Education: Librarians' Perspectives, Laura Lipke, Carrie Price Mls
Rethinking Systematic Review Assignment Design In Graduate Health Science Education: Librarians' Perspectives, Laura Lipke, Carrie Price Mls
Library Scholarship
Background: This article examines the problematic phenomenon of faculty assigning graduate health science students systematic reviews as semester-based assignments while expecting a health science librarian to be a willing support system for those students. Despite published conduct and reporting guidelines establishing that systematic reviews require a team, time, and methodological expertise, some faculty still turn to full systematic review assignments in the classroom. The authors propose applying cognitive load theory and chunking the systematic review process into manageable steps, allowing both faculty and students to better understand the required methodologies and to enhance educational outcomes.
Experience: The authors have often …

“Burned At The Stake”: Unpacking Disinformation In The Story Of A Coach Allegedly “Terminated” For Expressing Anti-Transgender Women Athlete Beliefs, Ellen J. Staurowsky
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
On August 29, 2023, a video testimony entitled ‘Burned at the Stake’: One NCAA Coach’s Battle to Protect Women’s Sport was released. The film was part of a “female athlete storytelling series” developed and funded by the Independent Women’s Forum (IWF) designed to support the IWF’s stated agenda to “fight to save women’s sports and counter the radical agenda that seeks to erase women” by allowing transgender girls and women on teams that match their identities. The central figure in the video is Kim Russell, then head women’s lacrosse coach at NCAA Division III Oberlin College, who claimed her right …
The Benefits Of Implementing Medication Administration Simulation In The Undergraduate Nursing Pharmacology Course, Ogulbagt Narova
The Benefits Of Implementing Medication Administration Simulation In The Undergraduate Nursing Pharmacology Course, Ogulbagt Narova
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Medication administration is one of the most critical tasks for nurses. Yet, it can also be a source of anxiety and errors, especially for nursing students who are still building their skills. Many new nursing students struggle to feel confident and competent when administering medications in real clinical settings. Simulation-based learning offers a powerful way to address this challenge. Using realistic, hands-on scenarios, students can practice medication administration in a safe environment without harming patients. This approach helps students build critical skills, gain confidence, and reduce the likelihood of medication errors. Incorporating medication administration simulations into nursing pharmacology courses will …

Spoken Word Percussion And Its Intersection With Communication, Gwen Leuschen
Spoken Word Percussion And Its Intersection With Communication, Gwen Leuschen
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Music is a form of communication, whether expressing emotion, telling a story, or delivering information. Communication is widely used in music. This communication takes place by conveying ideas through the sound produced by performers. This form of musical communication cues the audience into the messages, information, and emotions the composers intended. However, when text or spoken word is implemented into music, how does this affect the communication, and how can this be analyzed? This paper explores the history of music and spoken word, explains applicable communication theories, and finally applies these theories to music with spoken word, emphasizing percussion.

Supporting Local-Food Businesses To Conduct E-Commerce During Covid-19 Through Remote Student Internships, Angel Cruz, Barry Nash, Daniel Holloman, Joyce Yao
Journal of Extension
During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the global lockdowns changed the way food was accessed and prepared. These changes at the consumer level impacted farms and fisheries of all types and sizes. To compensate for the loss of larger markets and restaurant revenue, small-scale food producers pivoted to direct marketing to remain viable during the pandemic. However, not all businesses and producers had the time, skills or flexibility needed for a direct marketing business model. To support producers, the North Carolina Local Food Council developed a new internship program: Remote Internship to Support Enterprises (RISE) for Local Foods. The …
