Pine Vole Control Studies In Virginia - 1977, Ross E. Byers
Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia
Hand placed baits of Rozol (Chlorophacinone, CPN), Ramik-Brown (Diphacinone, DPN), and Talon (Brodifacoum, BFC) gave excellent control of pine voles in 1977. Vacor (RH 787) did not give adequate control when a meal preparation was hand placed at 10 lbs/A.
Talon and Rozol broadcast at 25 and 22 lbs/A, respectively, gave 100% and 967. control of pine voles. Five lbs/A of hand placed Talon gave equivalent control. A second broadcast experiment of LM 637, Rozol and Talon at 15 lbs/A each was followed by rain the next day but gave 21%, 66%, and 93% control, respectively.

Status Of Pp581 (Volak) Rodenticide Development, Dale E. Kaukeinen
Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia
In the Proceedings of the first Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposium (March 1977, Winchester VA), ICI was introduced and basic technical information on PP581 presented. PP581 is a second-generation anticoagulant rodenticide, with the approved common chemical name of brodifacoum. The compound is also known as TALON™ in the form of 50 ppm (0.005%) grain-base pelletized bait as developed for control of commensal rodents. The proposed trade name for the orchard formulation of PP581 is VOLAK™. Brodifacoum has been seen to possess several novel characteristics in work with commensal and other rodent species, suggesting a considerable general potential for control …
An Update On Rozol For Orchard Mouse Control, Sol Pitchon
An Update On Rozol For Orchard Mouse Control, Sol Pitchon
Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia
ROZOL- continues its advance in establishing itself as a reliable product for controlling orchard mice.
ROZOL GROUND SPRAY CONCENTRATE is still the only alternative to Endrin, not only from the persistence point of view, but for its effectiveness. Environmentally, ROZOL GROUND SPRAY CONCENTRATE is proving to be a desirable product because shortly after it controls the mice, it degrades into non-toxic metabolites, thus lacking the residue problems that exist with Endrin.
Furthermore, mouse resistance to Endrin has developed after many years of orchard use. Clear field data has established that ROZOL GROUND SPRAY CONCENTRATE is more effective than Endrin in …
Five Years Of Controlling Meadow And Pine Vole With Ramik Brown, J. G. Connell, W. B. O'Neal
Five Years Of Controlling Meadow And Pine Vole With Ramik Brown, J. G. Connell, W. B. O'Neal
Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia
Testing of Ramik for control of orchard mice was begun in 1972 in New York. By 1974 there were many test locations all over the Northeast, and by 1975 tests were conducted all over the country. Analyzing the results of some of the early testing suggested some refinements of application technique and formulation. These changes were made to better adapt Ramik to the conditions found in the orchard, and to make it more attractive to the voles. Some of the parameters examined are outlined below:
1. Bait flavor
2. Weather effects on the bait
3. Pellet size
4. Toxicant concentration …

Extreme Evapotranspiration By Irrigated Alfalfa: A Consequence Of The 1976 Midwestern Drought, Norman J. Rosenberg, Shashi B. Verma
National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
The rate of evapotranspiration by irrigated alfalfa at Mead, NE (41°09'Nj 96°30'W, elevation 354 m) reached record levels in 1976. Evapotranspiration was measured with precision weighing lysimeters in a field 1.9 ha in size. Evapotranspiration ranged during the growing season from 4.75 to 14.22 mm day-l and exceeded 10 mm day-I on one-third of the days studied. On each day of study the ratio of latent heat flux density (LE) to the sum of the net radiation and soil heat flux densities (Rn+S) was such that LE/ (Rn+S) > 1, indicating the occurrence of significant …

Local And Regional Components Of Sensible Heat Advection, Thomas W. Brakke, Shashi B. Verma, Norman J. Rosenberg
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Detailed knowledge of the advection of sensible heat is necessary to understand the energy balance of the evaporating surface in many parts of the world. Sensible hear advection can result from regional and/or local sources. The local and regional components of sensible heat advection (Aloc and Areg, respectively) are identified and their magnitudes in a semi-arid to sub-humid zone are established in the work reported here. Measurements of dry- and wet-bulb air temperature, wind speed and net radiation were made above an irrigated alfalfa field with relatively dry surrounding upwind at Mead, NE. A modified Bowen ratio-energy balance method which …

Critical Evaluation Of The Pulsed-Current Resistance Meter For Detection Of Decay In Wood, Douglas D. Piirto, W. Wayne Wilcox
Critical Evaluation Of The Pulsed-Current Resistance Meter For Detection Of Decay In Wood, Douglas D. Piirto, W. Wayne Wilcox
Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences
An evaluation of a pulsed-current resistance meter ("Shigometer®", Model No. 7950) for facilitating detection of decay was performed on wood blocks of giant sequoia heartwood and of white fir sapwood. As decay progressed over a 12-week incubation period, a trend of lower meter readings was obtained, confirming reported field measurements of other workers. Variability in meter readings in situations where the range in resistance readings between sound and decayed wood is narrow (e.g., giant sequoia heartwood) and apparent inability of the meter to make readings necessary to diagnose decay at MCs common to wood in service without ground or water …

Turbulent Exchange Coefficients For Sensible Heat And Water Vapor Under Advective Conditions, Shashi Verma, Norman J. Rosenberg, Blaine L. Blad
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Results are presented of micrometeorological measurements made over alfalfa and soybeans under conditions of sensible heat advection at Mead, Neb. The sensible heat advection phenomenon reported here is of a regional rather than a local nature. The exchange coefficient for sensible heat (Kh) is found to be generally greater than the exchange coefficient for water vapor (Kw). This result contradicts the usaul assumption of equality of Kh and Kw under nonadvection (lapse or unstable) conditions when the net transfer of both sensible heat and water vapor are away from the earth's surface. Under advective conditions, however, heat and water vapor …

Primary Productivity, Water Quality, And Limiting Factors In Lake Chicot, Edmond J. Bacon
Primary Productivity, Water Quality, And Limiting Factors In Lake Chicot, Edmond J. Bacon
Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports
Primary productivity, water quality, and limiting factors of productivity were studied in Lake Chicot from 1 July 1975 to 30 September 1977 to ascertain the ameliorating effects of a comprehensive water quality improvement project. The upper lake receives only limited local run-off, but run-off from 350 square miles of agricultural land enters the lower lake through Connerly Bayou, the principal polluted tributary. Run-off over the predominantly silt and clay soils in the subsidized agricultural area contributes excessive amounts of colloidal silt and clay to the lower lake. Connerly Bayou also contributes additional amounts of nutrients including calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, …

Radionuclide Concentrations In The Arkansas River Upstream And Downstream From The Nuclear I Power Generating Facility, D. M. Chittenden Ii
Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports
This report summarizes results obtained from a program designed to measure very low levels of some commonly produced radionuc1ides in the Dardenelle Lake area of the Arkansas River near the Arkansas Nuclear I Power Station operated by Arkansas Power and Light Company. The main thrust of this program was to determine the increase in the concentration of the radionuclides as a result of reactor operation as a function of their distance from the source. It was hoped to extend this study to include the effects of these emissions on the uptake of radionuclides into biological systems and their deposition in …
Interagency Conflict And Its Effect On Intermodal Shipping, Gerald Seifert
Interagency Conflict And Its Effect On Intermodal Shipping, Gerald Seifert
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
The movement of goods by more than one mode of transportation in a single container has been viewed by some in the marine component of the transportation industry as a transformation a important as the coming of steam. Concerns with intermodalism and the difficulties faced in addressing the needs presented by the technologically enhanced maritime transportation industry do not start with the invention of the first multi-package container capable of being moved by several modes of transportation without need to repack; they start with an exploration of the perceived need to regulate the several components of the transportation industry, the …
A Proposal For A World Ocean Management Authority: As An Alternative Ocean Regime To Meet The Challenge Of The Management And Utilization Of Collective Ocean Activities, Simon W. Tache
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
The oceans may be an alternative source of resource supply offering the opportunity for extensive practical uses. A number of ocean systems have been instituted to manage the exploitation of ocean resources including the practice of states to negotiate and enter into bilateral and multilateral agreements on a variety of ocean activities; but the complexities as well as the tendency of some of these ocean uses to generate extraterritorial effects, accentuate the need for a global response to alleviate these problems. Isolated individual national regulations and standards lack international uniformity to ensure adequate and rational utilization of the oceans and …
A National Approach For Marine Scientific Research In Exclusive Economic Zones, Thomas H. Brillat
A National Approach For Marine Scientific Research In Exclusive Economic Zones, Thomas H. Brillat
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
After years of constant negotiations at the Third United Nations Conference of the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS III), no new codified law for the seas has been produced. It appears certain, though, that countries throughout the world will exercise some form of sovereignty or national jurisdiction over an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) extending 188 miles into the ocean beyond a twelve mile territorial sea. Included in this jurisdiction will be the control of marine scientific research (MSR). A need has arisen to establish a uniform procedure for the conduct of MSR to the mutual advantages of the coastal state, …

Helminth and crustacean parasites from 2,387 Micropterus dolomieui, M. punctulatus, and M. salmoides were utilized to monitor annual pre- and postimpoundment succession patterns spanning eight con- tinuous years in Beaver Reservoir, Arkansas. Incidence of infection by ichthyoparasites with direct life cycles (monogenetic trematodes, leeches, and crustaceans) generally increased following impoundment, although leeches remained relatively constant. Exceptions to this general pattern occurred. Incidence of ichthyoparasites with indirect life cycles (digenetic trematodes, cestodes, acanthocephalans, and nematodes) decreased immediately following impoundment with subsequent increases to a point equal or above that of preimpoundment, although exceptions occurred. Time for species adaptation to the reservoir …

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports
Sampling point locations and analytical procedures remained unchanged from those outlined in previous Buffalo National River Ecosystem reports. The only significant change in analytical procedures was a reversion to the glass fiber filter method for collection and extraction of samples for chlorophyll analysis. This change was neeessitated by a need for filtering a larger volume to obtain enough chlorophyll for an accurate measurement. Samples were collected monthly from April 9 through December 30. No samples were taken in January or February due to the extremely uncertain traveling conditions caused by the frequent snows. Prior research indicates that the December 30 …

An Evaluation Of The Effects Of Dredging Within The Arkansas River Navigation System - Volume I - Introduction, Summary And Conclusions, And Recommendations, Arkansas Water Resources Research Center
Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports
The foundation for the development of the Arkansas River was laid with the authorization of many upstream reservoirs in the comprehensive River and Harbor Act of 1946 signed by President Truman. Subsequent authorizations were forthcoming and work began on many of the bank stabilization facilities in 1950 and on the major structures in 1957. The current McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System was substantially completed in 1972. The authorized multiple-purpose plan for the Arkansas River and tributaries provided for the construction of coordinated developments in the interests of navigation, hydroelectric power, flood control, bank stabilization, and related benefits including recreation and …
