Extreme Evapotranspiration By Irrigated Alfalfa: A Consequence Of The 1976 Midwestern Drought, Norman J. Rosenberg, Shashi Verma

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The rate of evapotranspiration by irrigated alfalfa at Mead, NE (41°09'N; 96°30'W, elevation 354 m) reached record levels in 1976. Evapotranspiration was measured with precision weighing lysimeters in a field 1.9 ha in size. Evapotranspiration ranged during the growing season from 4.75 to 14.22 mm day–1 and exceeded 10 mm day–1 on one-third of the days studied. On each day of study the ratio of latent heat flux density (LE) to the sum of the net radiation and soil heat flux densities (Rn+S) was such that LE/ (Rn+S) > 1, indicating the occurrence of significant sensible heat advection. On …

The Mcconaughy Rainbow ••• Life History And A Management Plan For The North Platte River Valley, Rodney C. Van Velson

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

McConaughy Reservoir and the North Platte River drainage upstream to the Nebraska-Wyoming state line represent a major part of the coldwater habitat in Nebraska, 87%, according to the 1972 Nebraska Fish and Wildlife Plan (Figure 1). The plan also showed the upper North Platte River drainage contains 159 miles of coldwater stream habitat and 192 miles of mixed cold and warm water stream habitat, 29 percent of the total mileage in the state. Together, these 351 miles account for 80 percent of the coldwater stream acreage in Nebraska.

Bird Utilization Of Woodland Habitat In The Eastern Quarter Of South Dakota, John M. Emmerich Jan 1978

Bird Utilization Of Woodland Habitat In The Eastern Quarter Of South Dakota, John M. Emmerich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Bird utilization of narrow, riparian woodland; riparian; block-like, tree claim; and linear, single-row windbreak habitats in the eastern quarter of South Dakota were studied during the spring migration, reproductive, and winter seasons. The relative importance of these three habitats and multi-row shelterbelt habitat was evaluated using bird species diversity (BSD), bird population density, and habitat preferences of individual bird species. Cluster analysis delineated distinctive vegetation cover types in each of the three habitats studied. Bird communities associated with each cover type were tabulated for comparison purposes and predication capabilities. Multiple regression analysis predicted physical and vegetation features of each habitat …

Effects of grazing systems on sharp-tailed grouse (Pedioecetes phasianellus jamesi) nesting and brooding habitats in the Little Missouri National Grasslands of southwestern North Dakota were evaluated. Three grazing allotments with deferred-rotation grazing systems and three allotments with season-long grazing systems were randomly selected for study. Fifty measurements of vegetation were taken using the height-density pole on line transects in each of three range sites; rolling grasslands, upland grasslands and lowland draws. Vegetation was sampled in late spring, summer and fall of 1976 and early spring of 1977. Average height-density of vegetation for the season-long grazing system was significantly greater than …

Evaluation Of Fish Stocking In Southeastern South Dakota Ponds, Paul J. Peeters Jan 1978

Evaluation Of Fish Stocking In Southeastern South Dakota Ponds, Paul J. Peeters

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A mail survey was sent to owners of 220 ponds which had received hatchery fish. Based on 187 pond owner responses, at most 45 (24%) of the ponds still contained the fishes stocked. Pond dryness and/or winterkill attributed to the failure of 121 (65%) of the ponds. A subsequent field survey of 30 ponds identified fish populations of recreational value. Attempts were made to identify important pond parameters that contributed to successful fish populations. Aᵼ (percent harvestable fish), F/C (forage to carnivore ratio), balance (in or out), and a scale of balance were the dependent variable used to describe successful …

Studies On The Role Of Solar Ultraviolet Radiation In "Natural" Water Purification By Aquatic Ecosystems, John Calkins, Jeanne A. Barcelo, Perry Grigsby, Stephen Martin

KWRRI Research Reports

The possibility that pollution might deplete the stratospheric ozone layer and intensify solar UV at the earth's surface focuses attention on the role of solar UV in the various ecosystems at the earth's surface. Previous studies suggested that solar UV might contribute to bacterial die off in wastewater and the studies reported here were directed toward elucidating the action of solar UV in "natural" waters.

It has been assumed that solar UV action on aquatic ecosystems can be evaluated (using proper models) on the basis of the following four independently measurable quantities: I) the intensity of solar UV at the …

Hydrology And Water Quality In The Central Kentucky Karst: Phase Ii Part A: Preliminary Summary Of The Hydrogeology Of The Mill Hole Sub-Basin Of The Turnhole Spring Groundwater Basin, James F. Quinlan, Donald R. Rowe Jan 1978

Rowe

KWRRI Research Reports

Water from upland areas flows to small ephemeral and perennial springs that feed sinking streams that are tributary to low-order cave streams. These cave streams, also recharged by diffuse percolation, are part of a dendritic network in which intermediate-order streams join high-order streams that flow to major trunk streams. The trunk in the Mill Hole Sub-basin flows across the bottom of a large karst window, Mill Hole, and joins the trunk of the Patoka Creek Sub-basin. Their combined discharge bifurcates, flows around the collapsed central core of a larger karst window, Cedar Sink, and re-joins to flow as one to …

Diversity And Density Of Shelterbelt Bird Communities, Thomas E. Martin Jan 1978

Diversity And Density Of Shelterbelt Bird Communities, Thomas E. Martin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The number of bird species and the density of each species were monitored in 69 shelterbelts in eastern South Dakota during spring migration and breeding seasons in 1976 and 1977. A total of 44 different species of birds were found during breeding and 68 species during spring migration. Approximately 60 to 80% of the species in a shelterbelt eat insects as part of all of their diet. Most of these bird species are territorial. Usually only 1-2 pairs of a territorial species will reside in any one shelterbelt. This low density is caused by the limited habitat area that shelterbelts …

The primary purpose of the study reported herein is to present methods for using estimated project benefits as the basis for distributing the capital, oeprating, maintenance, and replacement costs associated with the proposed Senegal River development program. The problem is complicated because the Senegal River is an international stream, so that it is necessary to consider not only the various economic use sectors involved with the program, but also the three separate countries of Mali, Mauritania, and Senegal. In attempting to meet the primary objective stated above, the report proposes an economic model which estimates economic benefits of the development …

Engineering Properties And Slope Stability Settlement Analysis Related To Phosphate Mine Spoil Dumps In Southeastern Idaho, Richard E. Riker, Loren R. Anderson, Roland W. Jeppson Jan 1978

Engineering Properties And Slope Stability Settlement Analysis Related To Phosphate Mine Spoil Dumps In Southeastern Idaho, Richard E. Riker, Loren R. Anderson, Roland W. Jeppson

Reports

The engineering properties of waste spoil from phosphate mines in Southeastern Idaho were determined through field and laboratory testing. Based on these properties, the slope stability and settlement characteristics of phosphate spoil dumps were determined. Hypothetical examples illustrate possible modes of foundation failures. Such failures might occur when weak foundation soils exist of when there is a lack of embankment-foundation preparation prior to the disposal of waste material. Adequate protection against slope failure occurring through the embankment material can be accomplished by grading embankment finish slopes to 2 ½ horizontal to 1 vertical or flatter and taking proper caution to …
