Behavioral Responses Of Pine Vole Young And Adults To Olfactory Cues, Lynette A. Geyer

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia

Ultrasonic vocalization rates of young pine voles are highest when pups begin to move into and out of nests and exhibit olfactory directed movement. As olfactory preferences become established and movement is coordinated, a decline in vocalization appears in pine vole. In the presence of home shavings young pine voles emit high rates of vocalization, while rat pups emit calls at a low rate. This contrast may relate to the intensive attachment of young pine voles to the mother in early life. Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia

The Third Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposium was held in New Paltz, New York, February 14-15, 1979 to further create an awareness of the fruit growers' serious tree girdling problem. The meeting served to focus attention on a diversity of information on animal biology, control strategies and information dispensing mechanisms. Research funding sources, chemical and cultural control methods, clearance of new materials, and governmental involvement in pine vole problems were discussed.

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia

At last year's meeting in Beltsville, William T. Sullivan, Jr., read a paper describing an experiment we had set up to compare vole control methods (Sullivan and Hayne 1978). In particular, this investigation attempts to measure the effect of clean orchard culture. This year I am describing some of our experiences with this experiment, with a preliminary appraisal of the different methods of study. Obviously, our observations must be accepted as very tentative, made as they are so early in the experiment.

Lake Mead And Lake Powell Salinity Reports, Cathy Lee, Steve Gazafy

The enclosed reports were compiled for the Colorado River Water Quality Office based on salinity data for Lake Mead and Lake Powell. According to the regional director of the office, the reports are not considered "polished" documents for public distribution. However, he considers them to be "interesting, rough appraisals of general trends that may be very important In our understanding the hydro-salinity system in the Colorado River."

Lake Erie Induced Mesosystems- An Operational Forecast Model, Kenneth F. Dewey

All Lake Erie lake-effect days for a 10-year period prior to the 1976-77 snowfall season were utilized in the development of an operational lake-effect snowfall forecast model. Upper air and surface observation were combined with overlake data and analyzed, using stepwise multiple-discriminant analysis. A nine-predictor mesoscale forecast model resulted from this statistical test and its performance was evaluated during the 1976-77 and 1977-78 snowfall seasons. The results of this evaluation indicate that it is possible to predict six intensities of the Lake Erie lake-effect snowstorm using this mesoscale model.

A research effort was initiated in 1976 to develop an objective lake-effect snowfall forecast model for each of the Great Lakes. It is the purpose of this paper to present the development and evaluation of the forecast method which was created for the Lake Ontario induced snowfall systems. All Lake Ontario lake-effect days were identified for a 10-year period prior to the 1976 snowfall season. Upper air and surface observations were combined with overlake data for these lake-effect periods. This annual report presents and interprets the information obtained by the Conservation and Survey Division (Nebraska Geological Survey) during contract year July 1, 1979, to June 30, 1980, under contract NRC-04-76-3l5 with the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The information pertains to the geology, structure, tectonics, and seismicity of eastern Nebraska with emphasis on the vicinity south of Omaha, Nebraska. Some of the information presented here results from a combination of studies begun in earlier years but the greater part results from studies begun during the contract year.

Planting Trees-Why Rather Than How, Angelo Cohn

Three evergreen plantings over 25 years in a private woodland are described and evaluated in terms of reforestation, economics and personal satisfaction. Credit is given to government foresters and support from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DN\R) and the federal Forest Incentives Program (FIP). Changes in site preparation methods, selection of species and planting procedures are discussed as outcomes of research and field experience. Cost-benefits are assigned principally to human values reflected in family learning and enhanced appreciation of the ecosystem of rural Minnesota.

A Program To Re-Establish And Study Prairie Grassland And Assess Effect Of Fire, Lee W. Eberley, Keith H. Dueholm

Two plots in southeastern Minnesota were seeded with several species of prairie vegetation . Grasses native to the prairie proliferated, while some foreign species failed to survive. Fire was used on one plot to stimulate the native species and reduce competition from cool-season grasses. Additional planting of forbs will be attempted to increase species diversity on the plots. Burning also will be continued to determine the effect of fire on the vegetation.

This study pertains to the problem of international activity in an area of political and ecological sensitivity, the Southern Ocean. Of specific concern is the question of which group of states should have a voice in management of Antarctic krill. The niche filled by krill within the ecosystem and its potential as a fishery is discussed. Past international practice has been affected for the most part by the Antarctic Treaty of 1959 which has maintained a somewhat exclusive "club" of nations as the overseers of Antarctic activity. An Energy Research and Development Administration report indicates that the United States is increasing its dependence on oil from the countries that participated in the 1973 oil embargo. Given the volatile situation in the Middle East at this writing, the Carter Administration's peace initiatives notwithstanding, this seems an imprudent policy. And, at a time when "Project Independence" is a recent memory, there is a great deal of irony in increased importation. It seems in the Nation's best interest to reverse that trend. A territorial ban on beach and sand removal in the U. S. Virgin Islands has resulted in a search for alternative sources. Insecure extra-territorial reserves and high shipping costs have made sand importation prohibitive. Recent surveys conducted in 1977 by the U. S. Geological Survey identified several nearshore sources of aggregate adjacent to the island of St. Thomas. In a 1978 workshop jointly conducted by the Government of the Virgin Islands and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration various alternatives were presented for sand extraction. Two alternatives are examined using a cost benefit approach.
