In an attempt to apply better management principles to the control of state lands, the Division of State Lands asked for the study of two questions concerning state administered lands near Moab, Utah. The first question deals with the Moab and Spanish Valleys while the second question applies to Castle Valley some 10 miles northeast of Moab. The Mill Creek Development Project is proposed to provide additional water for agriculture and M & I use in the Moab and Spanish Valleys. The research was designed to test and/or develop new systems of washing, peeling and blanching, develop methods of utilization of solid wastes, and find ways to reduce wastestrength of effluent without affecting quality of vegetables for processing. The highest wastestrength of effluent from vegetable processing in the region was found in plants that were canning Irish potatoes, dry beans and hominy. The high volumes of water used for washing spinach and leafy greens and the physical damage to the washed product is one of the major problems. Repetitive washing of spinach in the same water did not affect quality as …

Application of wastewater to the land has been designated a viable alternative for wastewater treatment by the Water Pollution Act Amendments of 1972 (PL 92-500). However, very little information is available concerning the long-term effects of applying wastewater to the land. The general objective of this study was to determine the long-term effects of employing secondary treated municipal wastewater as irrigation water. The study compared the quality of soils, crops, groundwater, and applied water to a site receiving normal irrigation water (control site) to a site (treated site) which had utilized seondary treated municipal effluent for irrigation water during a …

The purpose of this Mule Deer (Odocoileus hemionus) Habitat Management Guide is principally to assist BLM managers and biologists in planning for and managing mule deer habitat on public lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management. For many years Federal land management agencies have made the distinction between the Federal responsibility for managing habitat and the State prerogatives of managing native wild ungulate populations. Certainly the two are inseparably linked. These responsibilities, and up to now "symbiotic relationships", are probably best described succinctly in Title 43 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 24.

This paper presents an assessment of past and present technological innovations and research related to the present energy crisis-the impact and the interrelationship. In particular, it surveys the development of tidal power plants with particular emphasis on the past and present status of the Passamaquoddy-Cobscook Bay Dam Project. It exam1nes the benefits and environmental effects associated with tidal power development, and explores the causes and effects of the tides. It concludes w1th a brief detail of the feasibility of other renewable sources of energy-and of the impact of technological developments on marine and international affairs.

Recent awareness of the finite nature of fossil-fuel resources has resulted in an increased interest in alternate sources of energy such as geothermal. To evaluate the geothermal energy potential of the hot springs system near Midway, Wasatch Co., Utah, consideration was given to heat flow, water chemistry, and structural controls.

Abnormal heat flow was indicated qualitatively by snow-melt patterns and quantitatively by heat-flow measurements that were obtained from two of four temperature-gradient wells drilled in the area. Reciprocal plantings of populations of broomsedge, taken from an abandoned strip mine and from an abandoned farm plot in south central Kentucky, on strip mine spoil and abandoned field soil resulted in patterns of populations differentiation. Clonal plantings of populations from strip mine habitats and old field development appeared equal in height and biomass when grown on old field soils in both field trials and growth chamber studies. Populations when planted in strip mine soils in field trials and controlled growth experiments. The idea that Welsh speakers and non-Welsh speakers will respond differently to questions designed to measure the degree of feelings of "Welshness" of the two groups was investigated. The data were gathered by the use of a specially designed questionnaire administered to 404 randomly selected respondents. Four assumptions were considered: (1) Welsh speakers will identify more closely with other Welsh speakers, they will show a preference for writers who write in the Welsh language, and they will show a heightened sense of a feeling defined as "Welshness"; (2) Welsh speakers will more vigorously support the use of the Welsh language …

Low-pressure ultrafiltration with negatively-charged, non-cellulosic membranes is shown to be a feasible process in terms of achieving the simultaneous separation of dissolved metals (and sulfate) and of suspended solids from acid mine drainage water. The process is evaluated in terms of the simultaneous achievement of good water flux without membrane fouling and of adequate ultrafiltrate quality at high water recovery for water reuse operation.

At a transmembrane pressure of 5.6 x 10⁵ N/m², water fluxes in the range of 5.8 x 10^-4 cm/sec to 12.5 x 10^-4 cm/sec could be obtained at 97% water recovery. …

The concept of regulation in ecosystems has been given considerable attention in the ecological literature, but no formal treatment has been offered. This study proposes a rigorous definition of regulation which is derived from the mathematics of information and communication theory. A theoretical, mathematical equivalent of the definition is also offered which implies serious limitations as to the value of most traditional laboratory population studies and deterministic population models in understanding regulation in ecosystems. The empirical validity of this theoretical equivalence is tested through use of a competition model of two diatoms. Other observations concerning the relationship between environmental variability …
