From his own day to ours, the works of Sir Thomas Browne were never more popular than in the nineteenth century. His influence was great on the English Romantics and Victorians alike, and even more profound on the American Transcendentalists. He did not fare as well in the eighteenth century. One reason was the preoccupation of his literary executor, Bishop Tennison, who became Archbishop of Canterbury and probably had little time for literary chores; another was that some of Browne's literary remains fell into the hands of the notorious publisher Edmund Curll, who published hastily and without selection; but perhaps …

This thesis examines instances of Arthurian themes in the works of Alfred, Lord Tennyson, specifically the Idylls of the King. Modern critics and biographers often cite the need for a new study of Hawthorne and his wife, for a study of sex and sex symbolism in Hawthorne, and for a study of the love element in general in his works. Such aspects of his fiction have been all but totally overlooked by earlier critics who confined their comments largely to the sin and isolation of the characters. Both works, Chretien's and Wolfram’s, are literary masterpieces of the Middle Ages. The story of the Grail can be placed along side of Dante's Commedia in symbolical content. Like most medieval writings the Grail romances are full of allegory, remote allusions to symbolic relationships, and striking analogies, all of which leave us with a sense of wonder and amazement. In commencing the study of the style of Moby Dick, the student is confronted with several questions. Most important, perhaps, is the question of how much the style has contributed to the importance of the book, to the great adulation accorded it by many critics during the last quarter century.

Did Melville’s peculiar ways of expressing his ideas have some particularly timely appeal to the post-WWI Generation? It is a highly mannered style, unique as that of Tristram Shandy.
