A Study Of The Aesthetic Statements In The Poetry Of Keats And Shakespeare, Leanna Boysko

This study explores the aesthetic and moral statements embedded within the poetry of John Keats and William Shakespeare, operating under the classical and Renaissance assumption that art exists for both instruction and delight. The author employs a methodology combining the history of ideas with close literary explication to demonstrate that these poets use their works as a means of knowing and living, rather than as ends in themselves. The analysis begins by examining the evolution of the muse, tracing how both writers move from conventional classical invocations toward more personal and transcendent sources of inspiration, such as Shakespeare’s fair young …

This study explores the aesthetic and moral statements embedded within the poetry of John Keats and William Shakespeare, operating under the classical and Renaissance assumption that art exists for both instruction and delight. The author argues that poetic truth is implicit, emerging only from a comprehensive study of a poem's parts rather than explicit summaries. By employing a methodology that combines the history of ideas with close literary explication, the text examines how both poets move beyond conventional muses toward more transcendent sources of inspiration.

This somewhat historical approach to a literary topic, the Virginia Writers' Club and its progeny, a small literary magazine, The Reviewer, is concerned primarily with the presentation of evidence that there was a great deal of writing in Richmond, Virginia, in the early 1920"s. Although insufficient research materials available locally provide scanty basis for a critical analysis of the many works of these writers, I feel that the existence of the club, the motivation for its formation, and the kind of atmosphere that it produced deserve attention.

In the early part of the twentieth century, communities all over the United States witnessed programs presented by entertainers and lecturers affiliated with the circuit chautauqua. A great deal of speaking was done in connection with these programs . The following study was undertaken to discover the place and function of the speechmaking done in the circuit chautauqua. Because the state of Iowa has sometimes been called "the heart of the chautauqua", Iowa was chosen for this investigation.

The writer believes and hopes to demonstrate that, despite its unusual qualities, the third voyage of Gulliver is neither unrelated nor markedly inferior to the rest of [Gulliver's Travels]. Although George Orwell requested that no books be written about him, it is not difficult to glean a considerable amount of autobiographical material from his novels. His autobiographical works and several essays shed much light on his life and personality.

He was born in Motihari, Bengal, in 1903, of Scottish parents and christened Eric Blair. His father was a minor official in the Indian Civil Service and retired to England before his only son was eight years old.

This paper will attempt to provide a comparative survey of the four comedies of Oscar Wilde (Lady Windermere's Fan, A Woman of No Importance, An Ideal Husband, and The Importance of Being Earnest) with an emphasis on the differences between the first three comedies and the last. Background material germane to Wilde's development as a playwright, and a brief evaluation of Wilde's position in English literature, largely based on his reputation as a playwright, will be included.
