Nearly all critics of the novel from Saintsbury to Fiedler take note of the influence of Madame de Lafayette’s La Princesse de Cléves on later fiction, even though they do not always consider this influence significant. The original plan for research was to make a comparative study of plays written in the twenty year span before the theaters closed and in the twenty year period after the theaters reopened - a comparative study of Jacobean and Restoration drama. However, the availability of play copies limited the number of plays read and the authors used. Therefore the twenty year plan proved to be quite cumbersome and the plays were reduced roughly to a twelve year period. The subject for research then became "A Comparative Study of Caroline and Restoration Drama."

Subordination is not Mt. Everest, but neither is it a molehill which can be covered in one easy step, and this is what our textbooks try to do. Unfortunately, there is no single easy way to teach the use of subordination, and this paper cannot offer any positive remedy for the inadequacies of our college handbooks. It will, however, discuss the varieties of opinions about the subject, explore several possible approaches, and offer some suggestions for a changed method of teaching subordination to our students.

The Orc Symbol In William Blake's Works, Michael James Finnigan

A study of Orc, Blake's symbol for energy, suggests several different hypotheses. This paper intends to test the hypothesis that Orc is a force. With the use of illustrations and explications, Orc becomes more clearly a symbol of Blake's imaginative form. This energy will be seen at each level of Blake's visions, each different psychological stage, and at the highest level, poetic imagination. Thus, as the creator creates, the creation becomes the molded form of the creator's imagination.

It is the intent of this paper to demonstrate and prove Henrik Ibsen’s use of a constantly repeating key word or phrase as an essential structural device in his mature drama. This key word or phrase constitutes an architectonic device on which the whole play is constructed, around which it revolves, and to which it returns. In his book, On Poetry and Poets (New York: Farrar, Straus, and Cudahy, 1957), T. S. Eliot says that the poet writing on poetry "has peculiar qualifications and peculiar limitations" because he is "always trying to defend the kind of poetry he is writing, or to formulate the kind of poetry he wants to write" (p. 93). In order to understand the similarities or areas of agreement between Milton's theology and that of the Arminians one not only has to understand thoroughly the five Arminian articles but also must be familiar with the theologies which produced them. [I] will attempt to show why a few scholars and theologians refer to Milton's Christine Doctrine and Paradise Lost as being Arminian by simply comparing the two theologies and pointing out the areas of definite agreement between them.
