This paper is designed to interpret Transcendentalism by showing its origins and influences and to give the reader a view into the private journals of Ralph Waldo Emerson. The first chapter is devoted to a study of Transcendentalism and the question of its taking root in the Boston area in the 1830's. The second chapter presents a study of Emerson as he debated the forces of his universe and formulated a philosophy to explain the vicissitudes of life. It is necessary to relate Emerson's views with the events of his life. The years covered in the second chapter are 1820-1835.

Like so many writers of the twenties, Hart Crane was born in the Midwest--Garretsville, Ohio, to be exact, on July 21, 1899; and, again like his fellow artists, he matured in a society which he seemed to have already outgrown by virtue of his sensitive temperament. The amoral world of burgeoning American business was a place where no writers belonged. Main Street crowds disliked them as much as they disliked crowds. And, in finding his own path through that world, he, like many of them, permanently lost his direction.

This thesis will concern three facets of small town life: (1) The communities in thelr development have assumed certain general characteristics which apply to the small town regardless of its location and which are unique to a small town. (2) Within the community certain members have obtained social promenence because of their professional position. Their training in most instances was taken outside the town, and their statue was assured by the needs of the community. essays - investigative, critical, or interpretativee -were selected from the 1964 Senior Seminar in English.

It was the primary purpose of this Seminar to penetrate into the three types of tragedy written during the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods: the de casibus, Italianate, and Domestic. Nadeleine Doran's Endeavours of Art was used as the basis for categorizing the various plays studied during the semester. Of the papers herein bound, only two of the above categories are represented: de casibus tragedy in Coriolanus, Dr. Faustus, and Bussy  D'Ambois; ltalianate tragedy in The Spanish Tragedy, Othello, and The Duchess of Malfi.

These types, or stock characters, can be seen appearing and reappearing in literature, especially in the drama and in the novel. It is upon one of these recognizable stock characters that this thesis will concentrate.

It is the purpose of this study to explore several of Edwin Arlington Robinson’s poems in order to show the poet’s force of language and prosody and to reveal as much as possible his total poetic artistry. The poems are representative of his familiar, shorter Tilbury Town portraits and are taken from his early, middle, and late periods. An honest appraisal will be made to determine the true worth of the poetry, and an attempt will be made to show that Edwin Arlington Robinson deserves a respected position in modern American letters.

Dame Rose Macaulay possessed two qualities, a comic spirit and an intellectual pessimism, which made her one of England's finest modern satirists. Her satire has limitations. First, because of rapid and rather prolific productivity, some of the satire is repetitious. Second, the reader who enjoys satire is already aware of many of the flaws and incongruities of society. He has probably ridiculed them himself, so he may not find the satire as fresh and original as the author hoped it would be.
