In The Mind's Eye : A Study Of Shakespeare's Imaginative Use Of Stage Properties In Six Representative Plays, Margaret Hart Glenn Tinsley

The unity, or stylistic oneness, that is the most salient characteristic of Shakespeare's style has been achieved with such consummate ease that the underlying pattern of workmanship is imperceptible at a casual reading. Upon analysis, however, the ingenious means which the playwright has employed, perhaps unconsciously, to create this effect of unity easily may be discerned.
This paper is an analysis of the stage properties in six plays and their function in the plays' overall design. In this study it may be seen that within each play each stage property is so imaginatively used that it seems at once both …

The purpose of this thesis, if with respect only to the short fiction, will be to provide some measure of resurrection for a much-ignored and much-maligned talent. Scholarly interest in John Steinbeck has been distinctly minimal and even his admirers admit his artistic decline of recent years. Unlike the attention lavished upon his illustrious contemporaries, William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway, the number of major critical surveys of Steinbeck's works can be counted upon the fingers of one's hand. It has been customary to regard Hemingway and Faulkner, usually in company with F. Scott Fitzgerald, as titans, while John Steinbeck's, cast …

Shakespeare's play, The Merchant of Venice, is one of the most misunderstood plays in the playwright's canon. Although the play's popularity is evidence by its history of successful production, critics have looked with puzzlement at the drama because Shakespeare combined three tales having no apparent relationship into one play. The story of the man who is willing to give up his life for his friend, the tales of the caskets, and the love story of the Christian for the Jewess do have a common general theme of love. The hypothesis that students who do not take freshman composition courses in college are equal in writing performance to students who do take freshman composition after being in college for an equal length of time was tested in the pilot phase of a recent study, The Effectiveness of College-Level Instruction in Freshman Composition. The findings presented in an interim report affirm the hypothesis. Since the theme evaluations for the pilot study were done "holistically," it seemed desirable to determine whether a closer and more objective evaluation of a sample of the student themes used in the pilot study would indicate …
