Critics of Eliot often deal with his religious themes, but not with sympathy. In general, it seems that they are not at ease with Eliot's religious views; so the tendency has been not to give them a careful, objective treatment. The purpose of my study of the plays is to attempt such an unbiased examination, to keep in view precisely what Eliot dues say and the religious meanings that are clearly implied. Sherwood Anderson published only a few plays and, beside his lasting contributions to American literature (such as Winesburg, Ohio), these plays are of little literary value. Pandarus interests me because he is true to human nature in that he is not consistently one way all of the time. Like most human beings, Pandarus has many facets to his nature; therefore, I find it distressing that many critics and students of Chaucer will not acknowledge this complexity but rather tend to want to stereotype him. In 1956 the old idols were crumbling fast, and defense of tradition was fast becoming not only impossible but ludicrous. From the time John Keats began Endymion (March 1817) until his abandonment of the second version of Hyperion (September 1819), we have thirty vital months comprising a span of development unparalleled in English literature. This dissertation focuses upon the central feature of that development— the evolution of the creative mind of the poet. Although my project began as a comparative study, it ended up as being the separate study of two poets. But even in approaching the poets separately, I have found that their points of views do come together at important places as I have shown in the final chapter (Blake and Yeats: Crossing Visions). The poets converge most strongly, from my point of view on the issue of sexuality. Both feel that a body-soul duality is a great reason for man's inhumanity to man.
