Modern historians have agreed with Seventeenth Century writers that the most significant problem of Jacobean government was the conflict of the King’s Prerogative with the commonly accepted rights of English citizens. As everyone knows, the struggle, which began during the last decade of Elizabeth’s reign was not resolved and led finally under Charles to the Civil War. Observers of the time and some modern researchers have expressed the view that the people were on the defensive, trying to protect their native rights from overreaching monarchs. Student Scholarship

This study examines the artistic evolution of the character Stephen Dedalus across three of James Joyce's major works, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Ulysses, and Exiles. The progression is analyzed through the framework of Stephen’s own aesthetic theory, which categorizes art into three successive forms: the lyrical, the epical, and the dramatic. Each stage of development corresponds to the artist's shifting relationship with his subject matter and his audience.

The Image Of The Jew In James Joyce's Ulysses, Phyllis Joyce Cohen Levy

Since the beginning of English literature, the Jew has been portrayed as a villain. Edgar Rosenberg and Montague Frank Madder most affirmed the conviction in each of their studies of the Jew in English literature. However, the conclusion that the Jew is still portrayed as a villain is invalid because the image has changed. It is my intention to examine this change, focusing particularly on the character of Leopold Bloom in James Joyce 's Ulysses.

INTRODUCTION

Up to 1963 Sven Armens was the only student of Gay who had considered the intention behind Gay's work as a whole. Unfortunately Armens saw Gay's poetry almost exclusively as autobiographical and moral, reflecting the nostalgia of a country boy condemned to life in the city but setting forth in his poetry country life as ideal; city life as less than ideal at best, vicious at worst. Armens’ emphasis on Gay's nostalgia for the country is too strong, 1f not completely mistaken. The Altercatio Phyllidis et Florae is an Ovidian satire: a poem which ridicules certain mistaken notions of the meaning of the office of clerk by putting them in a context in which they become justifications for love. Such satire is possible in any age which, like Augustan Rome or twelfth-century France, defines a person according to his office and thereby can see the absurdity of making these definitions into reasons for praising a person's aptness for love.
