Recognition And Reversal In Samson Agonistes, June Haig Simons
Recognition And Reversal In Samson Agonistes, June Haig Simons
English Language and Literature ETDs
My study approaches Samson Agonistes by way of the tradition of Renaissance divine drama. The Introduction surveys the criticism of Sam from 1930 to the present and establishes the character of interpretations produced by other approaches. Chapter I surveys Aristotle's Poetics as the conceptual framework within which both Milton and the divine dramatists worked, emphasizing recognition and reversal. Chapter II analyzes adaptation of recognition and reversal in selected plays of the divine drama, revealing development of a method of dramatization that encouraged depiction of inner, spiritual conflict without allegory; plays discussed are John the Baptist, Freewyl, Acolastus, Misogonus, Samson, …
The Evolution Of A Black Writer: John A. Williams., Earl A. Cash
The Evolution Of A Black Writer: John A. Williams., Earl A. Cash
English Language and Literature ETDs
John A. Williams is a black writer who has been publishing non-fiction and fiction since 1960. All of his writings deal directly with the difficulties of being black in America. Commentary on Williams consists mainly of book reviews which place him in the shadows of James Baldwin and Ralph Ellison. Only recently, with the publication of The Man Who Cried I Am (1967) and The King God Didn't Save (1970), has the author received critical attention independent of his black predecessors. However, none of the critics takes into account both Williams' fiction and non-fiction. None gives an exhaustive appraisal of …
The Rhetoric Of Swift's "A Modest Proposal.", Nancy Jean Conrad
The Rhetoric Of Swift's "A Modest Proposal.", Nancy Jean Conrad
English Language and Literature ETDs
The recognition of Swift's rhetorical method in "A Modest Proposal" is an initial premise in most criticism of the essay. The satiric effect of the method is generally assumed; however, incomplete or inconclusive definitions of the essay's rhetorical structure have resulted in unsatisfying and unsatisfactory commentary on its satire--one critic finding it totally destructive, others failing adequately to account for the constructive purpose they claim to see. A formal rhetorical analysis of "A Modest Proposal," aimed at reconstructing the essay's argumentative structure and determining the structural bases for its effects, is the purpose of this paper. Because it is basically …

Poem No. 16. November 1972, Huntsville Literary Association (Huntsville, Ala.)
POEM
The Huntsville Literary Association was founded in 1967 to provide a community for writers, readers, and artists through workshops, readings, and educational programs. One of their key contributions is the literary magazine titled POEM which showcases original writings from both established and emerging writers. This issue highlights the work of Rosemary Stephens and uses "Pilgrim Shells," by Bettye Johnston as cover art.

You see, there was this kid about my age, and we were sitting on my driveway in Cupertino, California, and all of a sudden like he springs it on me: "There ain't no Santa Claus." Well, you can imagine what something drastic like this does to an impressionable kid barely out of diapers. I turned to poetry.

Thomas Hardy's Male Characters: Vehicles For His Thought, Peggy Belasco
Thomas Hardy's Male Characters: Vehicles For His Thought, Peggy Belasco
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Ihomas Hardy believed that each man should make his own philosophy, and he formulated his own system of thought under the influence of the Bible, the classics, certain of the philosophers, and the Wessex environment. The elements of his thought include religious and philosophical convictions, man's relationship to nature, social institutions, and Victorian limitations. The male characters of his novels set forth his thought just as his female characters reveal his emotions. They show the transition from his early traditional beliefs to his conclusion that the Immanent Will is the governing; force in the universe and that man's ultimate hope …
The Sensuous Order, Faith And Love In The Poetry Of Wallace Stevens, Sheila Conway
The Sensuous Order, Faith And Love In The Poetry Of Wallace Stevens, Sheila Conway
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of this study is to show Wallace Stevens' intense valuation of the sensuous order of the universe through discussions of his various works and their criticism. Also, the love themes and spiritual convictions which result from the poet's emphasis upon the things of this world will be explored. The love theme especially has not received the attention it deserves from critics, and when properly recognized, it adds important dimension to the pattern of Stevens' themes. Chapter I of the thesis will be devoted to a discussion of Stevens' preoccupation with the physical world. Chapter II will treat Stevens' …

Daniel Defoe And The Position Of Women In Eighteenth Century England: A Study Of Moll Flanders And Roxana, Joan Cavallaro Foster
Daniel Defoe And The Position Of Women In Eighteenth Century England: A Study Of Moll Flanders And Roxana, Joan Cavallaro Foster
English Language and Literature ETDs
From his earliest days as a journalist, Daniel Defoe had been sympathetic toward women. This dissertation begins with a discussion of eighteenth century milieu which influences the non-fiction, and finally focuses on the gradual emergence of Defoe as artist. The Puritan-rationalist tradition helps account for Defoe's attitudes toward courtship, marriage, and the role of women. Analysis of the non-fiction shows that Defoe continually stressed reasonable action and that his tone became shriller as his pleas for reform were ignored. In addition, the later non-fiction, particularly Religious Courtship and Conjugal Lewdness, employs novelistic techniques which finally are culminated in Moll Flanders …
The Female Warrior In The Renaissance Epic, Phillip Elliott Parotti
The Female Warrior In The Renaissance Epic, Phillip Elliott Parotti
English Language and Literature ETDs
In spite of much critical opinion to the contrary, the major female warriors in the renaissance epics are not reincarnations of the classical Amazons: minor similarities between the Amazons and the renaissance maiden-knights do exist. On the whole, however, the Amazoniar1 theory is inadequate because it unites the unique charm and individuality of the female knights with sterile Amazonian ferocity, a combination which their warm nobility transcends and denies. Instead, the female warriors in the renaissance epics owe their complex mystique to the literary and intellectual traditions surrounding the union of Mars and Venus.
Often interpreted as comic and lasc1vious, …
Light After Light Well Us'd: The Epic Conclusion Of Paradise Lost, Hans-Peter Michael Eller
Light After Light Well Us'd: The Epic Conclusion Of Paradise Lost, Hans-Peter Michael Eller
English Language and Literature ETDs
Current readers of Paradise Lost still question whether the content of Books XI and XII provides a conclusion which is integrated artistically with the prior books of the poem. Through an analysis of the thought, the character, and the plot of the last two books, this study directs itself to demonstrate three points. One, Michael's consoling revelation is of primary significance for the meaning or thought that it imparts. Two, the effect of this thought on Adam is the instruction or reformation of his character to the extent that he is able to choose and act, and, hand in hand …

War And Pacifism In The Lord Of The Rings, Nan C. Scott
War And Pacifism In The Lord Of The Rings, Nan C. Scott
Tolkien Journal
Examines polarized reactions to The Lord of the Rings as both a pro-war and pacifistic work. Sees it as much more balanced, showing Tolkien believed war to sometimes be necessary but peace to be preferable, and mercy to be important above all.
