The French Influence On Eighteenth - Century English Literature, Linda Jane Grow
The French Influence On Eighteenth - Century English Literature, Linda Jane Grow
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
The development of English literature in the eighteenth century was strongly influenced by France and French writers. Lately there has been an attempt to belittle the French influences. It is true that in the past the Gallic influence has been exaggerated, but it really cannot be overlooked.
Historically it is true to treat England and France as one country in respect to their literary activity between the middle of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Roughly, there were about 100 years, between the execution of Charles I in 1649 and the execution of Louis XIV in 1793, during which there was …
A Morphological-Poetic Approach To Hemingway's "Up In Michigan", George Robert Cripe
A Morphological-Poetic Approach To Hemingway's "Up In Michigan", George Robert Cripe
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Hemingway’s first short story, “Up in Michigan,” portrays the growth and destruction of a young girls’ romantic illusions about love through her infatuation with and seduction by an apparently gentleman who is really an insensitive brute. Hemingway explores this typically anti-romantic theme in what appears at first glance to be straightforward journalistic style. But the prose, like almost everything else in this story, is deceptive, for lurking beneath the flat surface of its denotative diction and simple syntax lie linguistics strategies and dynamically charged meanings through whose interplay the real disillusioning world of the story emerges. In thus concealing the …
The Indian Captivity Narrative: An American Genre, Richard Van Der Beets
The Indian Captivity Narrative: An American Genre, Richard Van Der Beets
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The vast body of Indian captivity narratives is known mostly to historians, anthropologists, and collectors of Americana. In the rare instances where informed scholarship has turned its attention to the narratives, emphasis has been upon the historical and cultural rather than the literary value of the tales. The Indian captivity narrative has been most commonly viewed as but a thread in the loose fabric of American cultural history, consisting of several "popular," sub-literary genres shaped and differentiated largely by the society for which the narratives were intended. The intention in this study is not so much to overturn that view …

The Divided Consciousness In Charles Dickens' Hard Times, Earl Paul Seymour
The Divided Consciousness In Charles Dickens' Hard Times, Earl Paul Seymour
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
What I shall do in this paper is apply Frye’s concept of romance to Hard Times, i.e., Frye's defining romance as a device for using archetypes. The novel, as Frye sees it, is a vehicle whereby “realism” or life-like representation is applied. Hard Times contains “stylized figures” which thematically and formalistically support the dehumanization concept Dickens is portraying. Thus Dickens turned, as it were, toward a potentially revolutionary form within which to accomodate what is in many ways his most original piece of writing.
The Crucible Of Conversation: A Study Of Jamesean Dialogue, Betsy B. Aswad
The Crucible Of Conversation: A Study Of Jamesean Dialogue, Betsy B. Aswad
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
My own initial bemused reaction to the language of Henry James I can place in a classroom in 1960 where, with a class of fellow English majors—-old hands, all of us, at Faulkner and Joyce–I was, in the first chapters of The Wings of the Dove, as “awfully at sea” as Merton Densher was when he first met Kate Croy. A timid question drew from the professor probably the best advice that can be given to a novice at reading James: “You can't just skim James, you know; you have to read every word.” Later, teaching The Turn of the …
An Examination Of The Sacramental Vision Of Dylan Thomas: Its Sources, Analogues And Its Expression In His Poetry, Margaret A. Hardesty
An Examination Of The Sacramental Vision Of Dylan Thomas: Its Sources, Analogues And Its Expression In His Poetry, Margaret A. Hardesty
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
Amid the twentieth-century prophets of man’s total and final disintegration, against the age’s portrayers of the incurable malaise and disease gripping society, the voice of Dylan Thomas sounds as a counterpoint, evincing a note of optimism for man and society, expressing a hope that both might achieve reintegration, and, thereby, a new life. This optimistic note, this expression of hope evolved from a vision which gradually possessed Thomas and became the lodestar of all his poetic endeavors. He moved away from an uneasy, pessimistic pantheism in his youth to a firm joyousness in the conviction that all things are holy …

Psychic Wholeness In Blake And Jung, Walter B. Gallant
Honors Theses
There is no doubt that for most modern readers the work of William Blake is an enigma. I should like to suggest that the work of the Swiss psychologist Carl Gustav Jung offers one way to bring a sense of order and meaning to Blake's work.

Sir Thomas Wyatt And The Struggle Of The "Weried Mynde", Susan Eichenfeld Ashton
Sir Thomas Wyatt And The Struggle Of The "Weried Mynde", Susan Eichenfeld Ashton
Dissertations
When the poetry of Sir Thomas Wyatt has attracted critical attention at all, it has been both praised and blamed for a variety of reasons, often the wrong reasons. Wyatt's role in the historical development of English verse, as the poet who introduced such forms as the sonnet, the rondeau, and terza-rima into English poetry, has been emphasized, while the originality and innovativeness of his poetry have been largely neglected,

Responses Of Students To An Introduction To Literature Class Compared With Responses Of The Same Students To High School Literature Classes, Warren E. Ask
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to investigate responses of students to an Introduction to Literature class taught by Mr. Alden Hanson at the University of Northern Iowa during the spring term of 1972 compared with responses of the same students to their high school literature classes. Four sources of information were used to gather data for the investigation: 1) At the beginning of the semester Mr. Hanson assigned a paper in which the students discussed their previous experiences with literature in former English and literature classes, their feelings toward literature and the study of literature, the types of literature …
