Miss Murphy's fifth grade students at Pleasant Street School enjoyed working on science projects which dealt with their favorite animals. It was suggested that the students bring in live animals, but after checking with the principal’s office Miss Murphy explained that th.1s was against the rules. The rest of the afternoon was uneventful. except that the teacher announced that she would not be in school the next day. After school, the students plotted to sneak in their pets the next day and trick the substitute teacher. Everything went smoothly, and each child told the class about his pet. The animals …

The Presuppositions Of Name-Calling In English, Robert S. Haller
The Presuppositions Of Name-Calling In English, Robert S. Haller
Department of English: Faculty Publications
I have offered evidence that name-calling is a linguistic act which correlates the assumption of a status-relation between speaker and addressee with the use of terms marked (+abusive). To call someone a bastard, for.this reason, is not understood as the attempt to categorize him according to some term whose meaning, in the ordinary sense, is a list of lexical features. Rather it is the attempt to categorize him as without status in relation to the speaker himself, in defiance of his expectations, and because he has himself deserved it by himself invoking such a right over the speaker. This understanding …

Beatrix Potter Through The Years, Carol Porter
Beatrix Potter Through The Years, Carol Porter
Graduate Research Papers
The investigation into the life and work of Beatrix Potter was prompted by interest in and enjoyment of the work of this author. The Tale of Peter Rabbit was the real extent of the acquaintance with Beatrix Potter. Perhaps the appreciation of the art in this book was even more fundamental. A serious desire for children to be familiar with the original story rather than the reproductions was a factor in wanting to know more about this woman and more about what she had produced.

Master's Theses
When Chaucer wrote the poem Troilus and Criseyde, he created a heroine who stands out from other romantic med ieval heroines such as Guinevere and Ysolt. He created a heroine of such complexities that critics have debated her motives endlessly and have explored the psychology of her emotions with every literary tool at their command. He created a heroirie whose sin was so damning that it inspired Robert Henryson to provide for her what he considered a fit ting punishment; and it inspired Shakespeare to try to salvage the wreck left by Henryson to create his masterful play.

Determinism And Freedom Of Choice Operating Through Five Experiences In Psychological Development In The Lives Of Three Of George Eliot's Heroines, Elisabeth Even Sale
Determinism And Freedom Of Choice Operating Through Five Experiences In Psychological Development In The Lives Of Three Of George Eliot's Heroines, Elisabeth Even Sale
Master's Theses
George Eliot's world is a deterministic world. She believed that circumstances and conventions imposed by society control events in an individual life; nevertheless, in the inevitable conflicts between inner desire and outer reality, the individual is responsible for his own choices and the acts which they direct. Furthermore, only in a deterministic world are intelligent, moral choices possible. The explanation or this seeming paradox lies in education or the individual by experience to learn to make satisfying choices and to develop a strong will. Through experience, the individual learns both the hazards of the selfish choice and also the lasting …
