Milton And The Classical Tradition : An Annotated Bibliography, Mary Lou Myrick
Milton And The Classical Tradition : An Annotated Bibliography, Mary Lou Myrick
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Because of the mainly scholarly studies of Milton’s works, and the many questions that have yet to be resolved, an annotated bibliography of Milton’s classicism is indispensable in enabling one to survey the ground that has been covered and to clarify the issues further. The observation that John M. Steadman makes about Paradise Lost also applies to Milton’s entire canon.
The items in this bibliography are organized in five categories: (1) epic, (2) tragedy, (3) prose, (4) minor poetry, and (5) general criticism. Listings within these categories are alphabetical.
Boys Will Be Boys Or How They Are Portrayed In Children’S Books, Nancy Volmer
Boys Will Be Boys Or How They Are Portrayed In Children’S Books, Nancy Volmer
Graduate Research Papers
For this research the author was concerned with the portrayal of males in literature; more specifically, the characterization of boys in children's books. The researcher wanted to find out if boys are represented realistically and if the characteristics of boys in fiction have changed over time. The books selected were fiction and the reading level ranged from fourth to sixth grade. The main character of each book was a male figure of approximately ten years of age. There were two time periods from which the books were selected. One grouping was from 1959-1963 and the other from 1970-1974. Other books …

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
A creative project has been undertaken for a learning experience in order to better understand and appreciate past and contemporary works of fiction and attendant problems of fabulation for the ultimate purpose of improving guidance of students through literary studies. The project, a novel, demonstrates an attempt to dramatize part of the contemporary phenomenon of the individual's search for "self" within a family whose members rebel against or accommodate themselves to varying perceptions of authoritarian endoctrination and expectation. Although the major characters are women, Heirs is not designed to be a women's liberation story. Rather, the novel is a comic …
The Prospector And The Pioneer: A Key To The Selected Short Stories Of Bret Harte, Emeline Beisman
The Prospector And The Pioneer: A Key To The Selected Short Stories Of Bret Harte, Emeline Beisman
English Language and Literature ETDs
My dissertation deals with the contrast between what I designate as the "prospector" and the "pioneer" or the transient and rooted elements of the frontier. The tensions between these two ways of life, I believe, provide an insight into Harte's fiction as indicated by the ten stories I discuss--"The Luck of Roaring Camp," "The Outcasts of Poker Flat," "Tennessee's Partner," "Brown of Calaveras," "Miggles," "The Idyl of Red Gulch," "How Santa Claus Came to Simpson's Bar," "Wan Lee, the Pagan," "A Passage in the Life of Mr. John Oakhurst," and “A Protégée of Jack Hamlin's." The opening chapter includes my …

A Theory Of The Perception Of Character, Donna C. Brown
A Theory Of The Perception Of Character, Donna C. Brown
Dissertations and Theses
In this thesis, the critical term "character" is defined from a reader's perspective as a process involving three elements: (1) syntactical character, the printed words that delimit character in the order in which they occur; (2) spatial character, these printed words organized in the reader's mind into a pattern. These two together are called grammatical character; and (3) a mental image that results from reading these printed words.

You Can't Go Home Again: James Baldwin And The South, Daryl Cumber Dance
You Can't Go Home Again: James Baldwin And The South, Daryl Cumber Dance
English Faculty Publications
James Baldwin, like innumerable other Black artists, has found that in his efforts to express the plight of the Black man in America, he has been forced to deal over and over again with that inescapable dilemma of the Black American - the lack of a sense of a positive self-identity. Time after time in his writings he has shown an awareness of the fact that identity contains, as Erik Erikson so accurately indicates, "a complementarity of past and future both in the individual and in society." Baldwin wrote in "Many Thousands Gone," "We cannot escape our origins, however hard …

Nuneaton Wreath-Laying, F.H.M. Fitzory Newdegate
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
I am delighted to be here this afternoon to lay the annual wreath at this ceremony, which was for so long and so happily associated with my mother. As a child I was not over-encouraged to reason the works of George Eliot, but I did, so to speak, grow up with her as part of the story of Arbury and the surrounding countryside, which she loved so much and which so greatly influenced her earlier works. It is not always easy to see someone who is part of one’s own background as a world figure, a universal spirit whose works …
Browning's Uses Of Humor., Paul Edward Coggins
Browning's Uses Of Humor., Paul Edward Coggins
English Language and Literature ETDs
Five of the major theories which attempt to explain laughter are those of superiority, contrast, release, enlightenment, and instinct. One seldom finds a single theory that will satisfactorily explain all of our reasons for laughing in response to a particular work. More often than not, a combination of appeals will be found necessary to take into account the complexity of what occurs between impetus and reaction. The overall aim in tracing out some of these major theories of humor and in trying to "place" Browning in relationship to them is to verify the contention that uses of humor, at practically …

Witnessing the continued plight of their black brothers in America, noting the continued strength of racism in this country, and discouraged by the slowness and ineffectiveness of integration, they have become frustrated and completely disillusioned with the promise of American democracy. If Paul Laurence Dunbar might be said to reflect in some of his works the accommodationist views of the leading black spokesman of his times, Booker T. Washington; and if Langston Hughes might generally be viewed as advocating the thoughtful, rational methods of Martin Luther King and the N.A.A.C.P. with their disciplined social protest and their optimistic faith in …
Money In The Fiction Of Willa Cather, Vincent A. Clark
Money In The Fiction Of Willa Cather, Vincent A. Clark
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The subject of money is important in the fiction of Willa Cather. She discusses it frequently and often at great length. In some works it is a major theme.
Despite its importance, a number of Willa Cather's critics have ignored the subject or have given it only cursory mention. Several ·writers, however, have discussed the subject at length. John H. Randall, III, in particular, analyzes it in great detail.· His analysis, however, goes astray at several key points.
This thesis shows that Willa Cather's attitudes toward money were balanced, humane, and consistent. These attitudes can be summarized as follows: (a) …
