The Crux Of Merging Deltas: A Note On Alan Sillitoe, Robert S. Haller Jan 1975

The Crux Of Merging Deltas: A Note On Alan Sillitoe, Robert S. Haller

Department of English: Faculty Publications

First paragraph:

The English Writer Alan Sillitoe is, to most Americans, a man of two books (or movies): Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (with Albert Finney); and The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner (with Tom Courtenay). Indeed, most Americans do not know that he has produced a book a year since 1959 (when The Long Distance-Runner came out), including eight other novels, three books of poems, two collections of short stories, one book of travel, one play, and one children's book. They know little about his life or the progress of his career, about his international connections or his present …

Selected Poems, Norman Macleod Jan 1975

Selected Poems, Norman Macleod

Ahsahta Press

When Ahsahta Press began to publish poetry in 1975, the first poet selected by press founder and editor Tom Trusky was native westerner Norman MacLeod. MacLeod, born in 1906, had been published in some of the leading periodicals of his day and also produced several novels. After fifty years of writing, teaching, and publishing, his poetry had become largely unknown to contemporary readers. The editors of Ahsahta Press sought out a representative body of MacLeod’s work and presented Selected Poems as the inaugural publication of the then-burgeoning press. More than a quarter-century later, contemporary readers still have the opportunity to …

Called Back, Patricia Y. Ikeda

Honors Papers

Settling: They left Japan and came to Colorado, got land. Typhoid came down the mountain stream, they drove a truck to Indiana, the black cast-iron pans swinging from the sides. A stillborn child, a hard winter. And the house so cold the water froze in the pitchers at night. Sunlight in the catalpa leaves, breeze through the asparagus fronds. My grandmother puts on her bonnet, in the garden the heat rises around her. I stand by the window, waiting for the hummingbird, looking through a stack of brittle yellow magazines that open from the back. A heavy maroon bathrobe, stiff …

The Dialectic Of Tragedy In "Hamlet," "Macbeth," And "Othello", Andrew Kaufman Jan 1975

The Dialectic Of Tragedy In "Hamlet," "Macbeth," And "Othello", Andrew Kaufman

Honors Papers

The purpose of this essay will be to suggest a reading of Hamlet, Macbeth, and Othello which I don't believe has received sufficient attention. The interpretation I will present is not meant to be suggested as the only valid reading of the plays, but as a reading which should be considered along with many other valid readings, in attempts to gain insight into these three major tragedies, and to understand their points of similarity.

Playing For Real: The Experience Of Drama At Medieval York, Christopher Baswell Jan 1975

Playing For Real: The Experience Of Drama At Medieval York, Christopher Baswell

Honors Papers

Almost all English drama suffers from the awful curse of having been written either before or after the works of William Shakespeare. It is generally admitted that no English dramatist rivals Shakespeare ; as a result, ever since the invention of "literacy criticism" sometime in the nineteenth century, Shakespeare has received the lion's share of critical attention paid to the theater. Later playwrights have, indeed, been given a certain amount of critical treatment. The real losers have been the plays written before Shakespeare's time-- the theater of the Middle Ages.

The Process Of Vision: Lambert Strether And Henry James, Judy Karasik Jan 1975

The Process Of Vision: Lambert Strether And Henry James, Judy Karasik

Honors Papers

The moral development of Strether in The Ambassadors is, as James says in the Preface, "a process of vision." From beginning to end, it is not what happens in the novel but how Strether sees it that provides James with a vehicle for the "development of extremes" which show the pitfalls of the moral and the aesthetic senses. Strether's "process of vision" restricts the point of view in the novel to his consciousness, and his return to America at the close of the book resolves the series of perceptions. James, while denying the possibility of moral action between people, creates …

The Readability Level Of The Newberry Award Books And The National Book Awards For Children, 1969-1975, Marilyn R. Wood

Graduate Research Papers

So many conflicting opinions have been advanced about the popularity of the Newbery books with children, the grade level they are best suited for, and the value of encouraging children to read these books. The National Book Awards for Children have caused less controversy, perhaps because they have not been around as long. Yet, the same criticisms and comments could be made about these books also.

Katherine Anne Porter : A Change In Her Mexican Perspective, Mario Paris-Fernandez Jan 1975

Katherine Anne Porter : A Change In Her Mexican Perspective, Mario Paris-Fernandez

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Katherine Anne Porter regards Mexico as her "familiar country." lndeed, Mexico in the art of this gifted American writer is more important than generally believed for, as William Nance says, "Mexico entered into her earliest work as both motivating force and subject matter."

Miss Porter has traveled extensively in Mexico and lived there on several occasions. Her highly developed artistic sensibility has allowed her to gain more than a mere familiarity with the country, its inhabitants, and its history. Naturally, her deep knowledge of the culture is reflected in her artistic production, part of which is devoted exclusively to Mexico. …

Thoreau's Civil Disobedience: A Reassessment, Thomas Aquinas Murawski Jan 1975

Thoreau's Civil Disobedience: A Reassessment, Thomas Aquinas Murawski

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Thoreau’s case is easy in one sense and difficult in another. One of the chief attractions of Civil Disobedience, and one of its necessary limitations, lies in its prophetic quality. Recent American history has confirmed Thoreau’s good judgment in abhorring state-supported racism and a questionable war. But in sympathizing with his outrage over these conditions, we are spared the difficult test to our forbearance that arises when others dissent against issues that lack the persuasive moral justification of Thoreau’s case. So in this respect at least, Thoreau presents a comparatively easy case. His case is difficult in that he minimizes …

Social Protest In Three Novels Of Carlos Fuentes, Jane Hamilton Rule

Structural Cohesion In Arnold Bennett's Clayhanger Trilogy, Laura Maurine Green Jan 1975

Structural Cohesion In Arnold Bennett's Clayhanger Trilogy, Laura Maurine Green

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This paper will demonstrate how Bennett’s “circumstantial” history of his age, as it streams by the reader, is controlled, analyzed, and interpreted. The framework of characters and events stand firm, their foundations solid in the systematic working-out, through symbolism and irony, of Bennett’s conviction that there is a “cause and effect” relationship between the physical environment and the character and sociological evolution and the character. Bennett writes that “the spirit of literature… enforces a moral wisdom by tracing everywhere of cause and effect.” The structures of characters and events are raised, reinforced, illuminated, inspected, and photographed through the use of …
