Poetry and romance in Shakespeare's non-historical plays have come into their own again with revivals of The Tempest directed by Margaret Webster and with the production of As You Like It, which features Katherine Hepburn. Unfortunately, the time limit of this paper has been set for the end of 1950, so it is only possible to mentin in passing Laurence Oliver's and Vivian Leigh's exciting and unique idea of presenting Shaw's Caesar and Cleopatra and Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra on alternate nights. A Study Of Tennyson's Historical Trilogy, Robert Caudius Markham

Although Alfred Tennyson ls not one of the great dramatists of English Literature. I feel that a study of his historic trilogy is worthwhile and beneficial. Probably we shall never understand completely the mystery of his turning to the form of the drama at the age of sixty-five. We can, however, recognize his growth and development in this field of literature and perceive hie political fervor and religious opinion from the trilogy.
The purpose of this work is to present a study of Tennyson's trilogy demonstrating the degree of dramatic development he achieved.

This thesis is an attempt to ascertain to what extent Tennessee Williams has accepted or rejected traditional precepts, concepts, and symbolism in the theatre.
Inasmuch as his dramas reanimate certain older forms with newer freedom, it is thought by many that he is changing the direction of the modem theatre. Just as Ibsen at one time rebelled against the conventions of romanticism, thereby founding a new school of thought in drama, today Tennessee Williams is leading a revolt against tho restrictions of realism. The purpose of this study is to appraise, or evaluate, the ability of a popular modern writer, W. Somerset Maugham., to develop fictional characters. Some critics of his novels have questioned Maugham's skill of character development, but have stated few reasons for their conclusions. When we consider that Maugham has been, and continues to be, one of the leading popular writers of our time, some conclusions regarding the development of his characters seem in order. The nineteenth century critics appraised Shakespeare's heroines by standards different from those of the twentieth; consequently the two ages reached different conclusions. The purpose of this paper is to point out just what these differences are.
A paper of this scope had to be narrowed in some ways. Otherwise a formidable array of heroines would have been enumerated, but little depth of research could have been shown. In the general conclusion the result would have been the same, as I have discovered through wide reading. To limit the subject only the most famous heroines could be included. The process of …
