Personalism In John Donne's Art, Phillip Shaw
Personalism In John Donne's Art, Phillip Shaw
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This study examines personalism in John Donne's art: to what extent his poems are a product of his personality over and above conscious invention and artifice. It argues that Donne writes the way he does because, for the most part, he fails to attain distance from his work. The subjects that he writes about regularly are straight from his own life, and his take on them is highly personal. This paper brings in some biographical details but in general is concerned with scrutinizing Donne's writings in order to understand his imagination. Its primary method is to trace the repetition, resonance, …
Review Of Perspectives On American Book History: Artifacts And Commentary, Melissa J. Homestead
Review Of Perspectives On American Book History: Artifacts And Commentary, Melissa J. Homestead
Department of English: Faculty Publications
Perhaps the best place to begin a review of this excellent new book is where the editors themselves begin in their preface, by defining what the book is not. Namely, it is not "a reader that merely reprint[s] scholarly essays" on the history of the book (that niche has recently been filled by The Book History Reader [2002] from Routledge), nor is it "a definitive history of the book and print culture in North America" (Cambridge University Press and the American Antiquarian Society aim to fill that niche with the multi-volume History of the Book in America, currently in …

Male And Female He Created Them: Ælfric’S Lives Of Saints And Patristic Theories Of Gender, Rhonda L. Mcdaniel
Male And Female He Created Them: Ælfric’S Lives Of Saints And Patristic Theories Of Gender, Rhonda L. Mcdaniel
Dissertations
My dissertation researches the writings of the four Latin Doctors, Ambrose, Jerome, Augustine, and Gregory the Great, in order to challenge the scholarly stereotype of misogyny and anxiety about women in the writings of these influential figures and, more importantly, to build the cultural foundation upon which to base an interpretation of Ælfric’s portrayals of male and female saints in the Lives of Saints.
Accordingly, in the first chapter I focus on the writings of the Latin Doctors concerning the practice of virginity and on their explications of the Trinity and the Creation and Fall of humankind. I then trace …

Ruling Powers, Scot A. Hanson
Ruling Powers, Scot A. Hanson
Theses and Dissertations
While the fantasy genre is one of the most widely read modes of writing, literary criticism and academic discussion of the genre takes place at a much lower level. This imbalance has developed in part because of a misconception that fantasy genre writings cannot accomplish significant, literary purposes. This thesis first offers an argument for why the fantasy genre should receive more attention in scholarly circles, then presents an excerpt of a fantasy novel. The argument draws from the limited amount of existing criticism to highlight the strengths of the fantasy genre, building a case that, in most respects, works …

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Chronological study of the friendship between Pitter and Lewis, illustrated with excerpts from their letters to each other and from Pitter’s poetry. Includes her transcript of a conversation about where the Beavers got the ingredients for the lunch they fed the Pevensie children.

Wizards And Wainscots: Generic Structures And Genre Themes In The Harry Potter Series, Kerrie Anne Le Lievre
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Examines the Harry Potter series as an example of a “high fantasy scenario within the structure of a wainscot fantasy”—that is, high fantasy themes taking place in a world of two parallel cultures, one an “invisible or undetected” society existing “in the interstices of the dominant world.”
Willa Cather As Equivocal Icon, Guy J. Reynolds
Willa Cather As Equivocal Icon, Guy J. Reynolds
Department of English: Presentations
All icons are ultimately equivocal: you can’t think of an icon without thinking about iconoclasm. Iconicity is a function of place. Cather turned the creation of icons, and the sceptical deconstruction of icons, into a form of narrative quest that could animate a whole fiction. After Cather’s death, her coterie, Midwesterners who had come East, were faced with what to make of an iconic heartlands figure who had moved to this re¬gion. Cather’s status as Midwestern icon became, after her death, a subject of struggle among E.K Brown, his widow Peggy Brown, Dorothy Canfield, Edith Lewis, Alfred Knopf, Leon Edel, …

The Unfinished Woman: Images Of Single Women In Wharton, Parker, And Paley, Erin Wolverton
The Unfinished Woman: Images Of Single Women In Wharton, Parker, And Paley, Erin Wolverton
Honors Theses
Is the life of a single woman really worth living? The question permeates the culture of the post-feminist era. Women without children and without a committed relationship in their lives can be categorized in two ways: those who deliberately dismiss the idea of a spouse and those who have not found an acceptable one yet. Both categories carry their own social stigmas: a woman who can't trap a man is a failure, a woman who doesn't want one is unnatural. These prejudices have been a part of women's unconscious behavior since the earliest days of feminism.

Albie The Mad Albanian: The Cross-Cultural Influence Between Byron And Albania, Suzan S. Hyssen
Albie The Mad Albanian: The Cross-Cultural Influence Between Byron And Albania, Suzan S. Hyssen
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The subject of Byron and Albania has been historically neglected but merits study for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the importance Byron himself gave to Albania. While Western Byron scholars have tended either to omit discussion of Albania or to conflate Albania with Greece in Byron’s writing, a reading of “Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage” and its notes will demonstrate the centrality of Albania to the formation of the Byronic persona. In addition, this thesis draws on Albanian scholarship on Byron, furthering international work on this crucial aspect of Byron’s career.
